Facile Chemical Bath Synthesis of SnS Nanosheets and Their Ethanol Sensing Properties.

ABSTRACT: Tin(II) monosulfide (SnS) nanosheets were synthesized using SnCl4•5H2O and S powders as raw materials in the presence of H2O via a facile chemical bath method. Orthorhombic phase SnS nanosheets with a thickness of ~100 nm and lateral dimensions of 2~10 μm were obtained by controlling the synthesis parameters. The formation of a SnO2 intermediate is key to the valence reduction of Sn ions (from IV to II) and the formation of SnS. The gas sensors fabricated from SnS nanosheets exhibited an excellent response of 14.86 to 100 ppm ethanol vapor when operating at 160 °C, as well as fast response and recovery times of 23 s and 26 s, respectively. The sensors showed excellent selectivity for the detection of ethanol over acetone, methanol, and ammonia gases, which indicates the SnS nanosheets are promising for high-performance ethanol gas sensing applications.

MXene Core-Shell Nanosheets: Facile Synthesis, Optical Properties, and Versatile Photonics Applications.

Project description:In recent years, the transition metal carbonitrides(MXenes) have been widely applied to photoelectric field, and better performance of these applications was achieved via MXene complex structures. In our work, we proposed a MXene core-shell nanosheet composed of a Ti2C (MXene) phase and gold nanoparticles, and applied it to mode-locked and single-frequency fiber laser applications. The optoelectronic results suggested that the performances of these two applications were both improved when MXene core-shell nanosheets were applied. As a result, we obtained a mode-locking operation with 670 fs pulses, and the threshold pump power reached to as low as 20 mW. Besides, a single-frequency laser with the narrowest linewidth of ~1 kHz is also demonstrated experimentally. Our research work proved that MXene core-shell nanosheets could be used as saturable absorbers (SAs) to promote versatile photonic applications.

Facile chemical synthesis and equilibrium unfolding properties of CopG.

Project description:The 45-amino acid polypeptide chain of the homodimeric transcriptional repressor, CopG, was chemically synthesized by stepwise solid phase peptide synthesis (SPPS) using a protocol based on Boc-chemistry. The product obtained from the synthesis was readily purified by reversed-phase HPLC to give a good overall yield (21% by weight). Moreover, the synthetic CopG constructs prepared in this work folded into three-dimensional structures similar to the wild-type protein prepared using conventional recombinant methods as judged by far UV-CD spectroscopy. A fluorescent CopG analog, (Y39W)CopG, was also designed and chemically synthesized to facilitate biophysical studies of CopG's protein folding and assembly reaction. The guanidinium chloride-induced equilibrium unfolding properties of the wild-type CopG and (Y39W)CopG constructs in this work were characterized and used to develop a model for CopG's equilibrium unfolding reaction. Our results indicate that CopG's folding and assembly reaction is well modeled by a two-state process involving folded dimer and unfolded monomer. Using this model, DeltaG(f) and m-values of -13.42 +/- 0.04 kcal/mole dimer and 1.92 +/- 0.01 kcal/(mole M) were calculated for CopG.

Facile microwave-assisted synthesis of Klockmannite CuSe nanosheets and their exceptional electrical properties.

Project description:Klockmannite copper selenide nanosheets (CuSe NSs) are synthesized by a facile microwave-assisted method and fully characterized. The nanosheets have smooth surface and hexagonal shape. The lateral size is 200-500 nm × 400-800 nm and the thickness is 55 ± 20 nm. The current-voltage characteristics of CuSe NS films show unique Ohmic and high-conducting behaviors, comparable to the thermally-deposited gold electrode. The high electrical conductivity of CuSe NSs implies their promising applications in printed electronics and nanodevices. Moreover, the local electrical variation is observed, for the first time, within an individual CuSe NS at low bias voltages (0.1 ~ 3 V) by conductive atomic force microscopy (C-AFM). This is ascribed to the quantum size effect of NS and the presence of Schottky barrier. In addition, the influence of the molar ratio of Cu(2+)/SeO2, reaction temperature, and reaction time on the growth of CuSe NSs is explored. The template effect of oleylamine and the intrinsic crystal nature of CuSe NS are proposed to account for the growth of hexagonal CuSe NSs.

Chemical sensing in two dimensional porous covalent organic nanosheets.

Project description:Two new imide-based crystalline, porous, and chemically stable covalent organic frameworks (COFs) (TpBDH and TfpBDH) have been successfully synthesized employing solvothermal crystallization route. Furthermore, thin layered covalent organic nanosheets (CONs) were derived from these bulk COFs by the simple liquid phase exfoliation method. These 2D CONs showcase increased luminescence intensity compared to their bulk counterparts (COFs). Notably, TfpBDH-CONs showcase good selectivity and prominent, direct visual detection towards different nitroaromatic analytes over TpBDH-CONs. Quite interestingly, TfpBDH-CONs exhibit a superior "turn-on" detection capability for 2,4,6-trinitrophenol (TNP) in the solid state, but conversely, they also show a "turn-off" detection in the dispersion state. These findings describe a new approach towards developing an efficient, promising fluorescence chemosensor material for both visual and spectroscopic detection of nitroaromatic compounds with very low [10-5 (M)] analyte concentrations.

Facile Synthesis of Two Dimensional (2D) V2O5 Nanosheets Film towards Photodetectors.

Project description:Most of the studies focused on V2O5 have been devoted to obtaining specific morphology and microstructure for its intended applications. Two dimensional (2D) V2O5 has the most valuable structure because of its unique planar configuration that can offer more active sites. In this study, a bottom-up and low-cost method that is hydrothermal combined with spin-coating and subsequent annealing was developed to prepare 2D V2O5 nanosheets film on quartz substrate. First, VOOH nanosheets were prepared by the hydrothermal method using V2O5 powders and EG as raw materials. Further, V2O5 nanosheets with an average lateral size over 500 nm and thickness less than 10 nm can be prepared from the parent VOOH nanosheets by annealing at 350 °C for 15 min in air. The prepared V2O5 nanosheets film was assembled of multiple nanosheets. The structural, morphological, microstructural and optical properties of the films were respective investigated by XRD, SEM, TEM and UV-Vis. The photodetector based on V2O5 nanosheets film shows good photoresponse with a response time of 2.4 s and a recovery time of 4.7 s.

Facile Synthesis of Ag NP Films via Evaporation-Induced Self-Assembly and the BA-Sensing Properties.

Project description:Herein, we design and prepare large-area silver nanoparticle (Ag NP) films based on evaporation-induced self-assembly, which offers the visual and real-time detection of chilled broiler meat freshness. The color change is based on the fact that an increase in the biogenic amine (BA) concentration causes a change in the absorption wavelength of Ag NPs caused by aggregation and etch of the Ag NPs, resulting in a yellow to brown color change, thus enabling a naked-eye readout of the BA exposure. The Ag NP films exhibit a rapid, sensitive, and linear response to BAs in a wide detection range of 2 µM to 100 µM. The Ag NP films are successfully applied as a quick-response, online, high-contrasting colorimetric sensor for visual detection of the freshness of chilled broiler meat.

Facile synthesis of aqueous-dispersed luminescent nanosheets from non-layered lanthanum hexaboride.

Project description:Two-dimensional nanosheets of non-layered materials have been considered as inaccessible through exfoliation techniques, due to their intrinsic three-dimensional lattice structure. Herein we report the successful synthesis of nanosheets from non-layered, lanthanum hexaboride through a facile, solution-assisted, surfactant-free, sonication. The morphological studies clearly show the presence of nanosheets having thickness of a few nanometers, and having lateral dimensions of several hundreds of nanometres. The as-fabricated nanosheets were found to be rich in hydroxyl groups, and hence exhibit excellent dispersion stability in water. The aqueous-dispersed nanosheets demonstrate excitation-wavelength dependent luminescence in the blue-cyan region, when excited with UV-light.

Atmospheric pressure chemical vapor deposition growth of vertically aligned SnS2 and SnSe2 nanosheets.

Project description:Laminated metal dichalcogenides are candidates for different potential applications ranging from catalysis to nanoelectronics. However, efforts are still needed to optimize synthesis methods aiming to control the number of layers, morphology, and crystallinity, parameters that govern the properties of the synthesized materials. Another important parameter is the thickness and the length of the samples with the possibility of large-scale growth of target homogeneous materials. Here, we report a chemical vapor deposition method at atmospheric pressure to produce vertically aligned tin dichalcogenide based-materials. Tin disulfide (SnS2) and tin diselenide (SnSe2) vertically aligned nanosheets have been synthesized and characterized by different methods showing their crystallinity and purity. Homogenous crystalline 2H-phase SnS2 nanosheets with high purity were synthesized with vertical orientation on substrates; sulfur vacancies were observed at the edges of the sheets. Similarly, in the crystalline 2H phase SnSe2 nanosheets selenium vacancies were observed at the edges. Moreover, these nanosheets are larger than the SnS2 nanosheets, show lower nanosheet homogeneity on substrates and contamination with selenium atoms from the synthesis was observed. The synthesized nanomaterials are interesting in various applications where the edge accessibility and/or directionality of the nanosheets play a major role as for example in gas sensing or field emission.

Facile Synthesis of SnS2 Nanostructures with Different Morphologies for High-Performance Supercapacitor Applications.

Project description:SnS2 is an emerging candidate for an electrode material because of the considerable interlayer spaces in its crystal structures and the large surface area. SnS2 as a photocatalyst and in lithium ion batteries has been reported. On the other hand, there are only a few reports of their supercapacitor applications. In this study, sheetlike SnS2 (SL-SnS2), flowerlike SnS2 (FL-SnS2), and ellipsoid-like SnS2 (EL-SnS2) were fabricated via a facile solvothermal route using different types of solvents. The results suggested that the FL-SnS2 exhibited better capacitive performance than the SL-SnS2 and EL-SnS2, which means that the morphology has a significant effect on the electrochemical reaction. The FL-SnS2 displayed higher supercapacitor performance with a high capacity of approximately ∼431.82 F/g at a current density of 1 A/g. The remarkable electrochemical performance of the FL-SnS2 could be attributed to the large specific surface area and better average pore size. These results suggest that a suitable solvent is appropriate for the large-scale construction of SnS2 with different morphologies and also has huge potential in the practical applications of high-performance supercapacitors.

Ultrathin two-dimensional porous organic nanosheets with molecular rotors for chemical sensing.

Project description:Molecular rotors have played an important role in recent materials chemistry. Although several studies on functional materials containing molecular rotors have been reported for fluorescence sensing, this concept has yet to be realized in two-dimensional (2D) materials. Here we report the preparation of all-carbon, π-conjugated 2D porous organic nanosheets, named NUS-24, which contain flexible tetraphenylethylene (TPE) units as the molecular rotors. NUS-24 nanosheets exhibit high stability, large lateral size, and ultrathin thickness (2-5 nm). The dynamic TPE rotors exposed on the surface of NUS-24 nanosheets can be restricted in the aggregated state with different water fractions, which is reminiscent of the aggregation-induced emission mechanism, thereby leading to the size-selective turn-on fluorescence by volatile organic compounds. Significantly, the ultrathin 2D nanosheets and its composite membranes show much higher sensitivity and selectivity toward Fe3+ ions and nitro-containing compounds sensing, suggesting their potential applications in explosive detection and environmental monitoring.
