Self-assembly behaviors of perylene- and naphthalene-crown macrocycle conjugates in aqueous medium.

ABSTRACT: The synthesis of conjugates of perylene diimide (PDI) and naphthalene diimide (NDI) modified with two benzo-21-crown-7 ethers (B21C7) are herein described. Their self-assembly behavior in various solvents was investigated particularly in aqueous medium, due to the recently discovered hydrophilic properties of B21C7 crown macrocycle. An unexpected fluorescence quenching phenomenon was observed in the PDI-B21C7 macrocycle conjugate in chloroform. The detailed UV-vis absorption and fluorescence spectra of these PDI/NDI derivatives in different solvents as well as their morphologies were investigated.

Redox-sensitive reversible self-assembly of amino acid-naphthalene diimide conjugates.

Project description:Peptide and low molecular weight amino acid-based materials that self-assemble in response to environmental triggers are highly desirable candidates in forming functional materials with tunable biophysical properties. In this paper, we explore redox-sensitive self-assembly of cationic phenylalanine derivatives conjugated to naphthalene diimide (NDI). Self-assembly of the cationic Phe-NDI conjugates into nanofibrils was induced in aqueous solvent at high ionic strength. Under reducing conditions, these self-assembled Phe-NDI conjugate fibrils underwent a morphological change to non-fibril aggregates. Upon reoxidation, the initially observed fibrils were reformed. The study herein provides an interesting strategy to effect reversible switching of the structure of supramolecular materials that can be applied to the development of sophisticated stimulus-responsive materials.

A Chirally Locked Bis-perylene Diimide Macrocycle: Consequences for Chiral Self-Assembly and Circularly Polarized Luminescence.

Project description:Macrocycles containing chiral organic dyes are highly valuable for the development of supramolecular circularly polarized luminescent (CPL) materials, where a preorganized chiral framework is conducive to directing π-π self-assembly and delivering a strong and persistent CPL signal. Here, perylene diimides (PDIs) are an excellent choice for the organic dye component because, alongside their tunable photophysical and self-assembly properties, functionalization of the PDI's core yields a twisted, chiral π-system, capable of CPL. However, configurationally stable PDI-based macrocycles are rare, and those that are also capable of π-π self-assembly beyond dimers are unprecedented, both of which are advantageous for robust self-assembled chiroptical materials. In this work, we report the first bay-connected bis-PDI macrocycle that is configurationally stable (ΔG⧧ > 155 kJ mol-1). We use this chirally locked macrocycle to uncover new knowledge of chiral PDI self-assembly and to perform new quantitative CPL imaging of the resulting single-crystal materials. As such, we discover that the chirality of a 1,7-disubstituted PDI provides a rational route to designing H-, J- and concomitant H- and J-type self-assembled materials, important arrangements for optimizing (chir)optical and charge/energy transport properties. Indeed, we reveal that CPL is amplified in the single crystals of our chiral macrocycle by quantifying the degree of emitted light circular polarization from such materials for the first time using CPL-Laser Scanning Confocal Microscopy.

Relationship between Side-Chain Polarity and the Self-Assembly Characteristics of Perylene Diimide Derivatives in Aqueous Solution.

Project description:Perylene-3,4,9,10-tetracarboxylic acid diimides (PDIs) have recently gained considerable interest for water-based biosensing applications. PDIs have been studied intensively in the bulk state, but their physical properties in aqueous solution in interplay with side-chain polarity are, however, poorly understood. Therefore, three perylene diimide based derivatives were synthesized to study the relationship between side-chain polarity and their self-assembly characteristics in water. The polarity of the side chains was found to dictate the size and morphology of the formed aggregates. Side-chain polarity rendered the self-assembly and photophysical properties of the PDIs-both important for imminent water-based applications-and these were revealed to be especially responsive to changes in solvent composition.

Globular Aggregates Stemming from the Self-Assembly of an Amphiphilic N-Annulated Perylene Bisimide in Aqueous Media.

Project description:Herein, we describe the synthesis of highly emissive amphiphilic N-annulated PBI 1 decorated with oligo ethylene glycol (OEG) side chains. These polar side chains allow the straightforward solubility of 1 in solvents of different polarity such as water, iPrOH, dioxane, or chloroform. Compound 1 self-assembles in aqueous media by π-stacking of the aromatic units and van der Waals interactions, favored by the hydrophobic effect. The hypo- and hypsochromic effect observed in the UV-Vis spectra of 1 in water in comparison to chloroform is diagnostic of H-type aggregation. Solvent denaturation experiments allow deriving the free Gibbs energy for the self-assembly process in aqueous media and the factor m that is indicative of the influence exerted by a good solvent in the stability of the final aggregates. The ability of compound 1 to self-assemble in water yields globular aggregates that have been visualized by TEM imaging.

Precise heteroatom doping determines aqueous solubility and self-assembly behaviors for polycyclic aromatic skeletons.

Project description:Developing effective strategies to improve the hydrophilicity or aqueous solubility of hydrophobic molecular scaffolds is meaningful for both academic research and industrial applications. Herein, we demonstrate that stepwise and precise N/O heteroatoms doping on a polycyclic aromatic skeleton can gradually alter these structures from hydrophobic to hydrophilic, even resulting in excellent aqueous solubility. The Hansen solubility parameters (HSP) method shows that the three partial solubility parameters are closely related to N/O doping species, numbers and positions on the molecular panel. The hydrogen bonding solubility parameter indicates that the hydrogen bonding interactions between N/O doped molecules and water play a key role in enhancing hydrophilicity. Moreover, three optimized water-soluble molecules underwent a self-assembly process to form stable nanoparticles in water, thus facilitating better hydrogen bonding interactions disclosed by HSP calculations, NMR and single crystal X-ray analysis. These ensembles even show quasi-solid properties in water from NMR and luminescence perspectives.

Chiral perylene diimides: building blocks for ionic self-assembly.

Project description:A chiral perylene diimide building block has been prepared based on an amine derivative of the amino acid L-phenylalanine. Detailed studies were carried out into the self-assembly behaviour of the material in solution and the solid state using UV/Vis, circular dichroism (CD) and fluorescence spectroscopy. For the charged building block BTPPP, the molecular chirality of the side chains is translated into the chiral supramolecular structure in the form of right-handed helical aggregates in aqueous solution. Temperature-dependent UV/Vis studies of BTPPP in aqueous solution showed that the self-assembly behaviour of this dye can be well described by an isodesmic model in which aggregation occurs to generate short stacks in a reversible manner. Wide-angle X-ray diffraction studies (WXRD) revealed that this material self-organises into aggregates with π-π stacking distances typical for π-conjugated materials. TEM investigations revealed the formation of self-assembled structures of low order and with no expression of chirality evident. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and polarised optical microscopy (POM) were used to investigate the mesophase properties. Optical textures representative of columnar liquid-crystalline phases were observed for solvent-annealed samples of BTPPP. The high solubility, tunable self-assembly and chiral ordering of these materials demonstrate their potential as new molecular building blocks for use in the construction of chiro-optical structures and devices.

Carbonate-templated self-assembly of an alkylthiolate-bridged cadmium macrocycle.

Project description:In the presence of Cd(ClO4)2 and a base, a new mixed N,S-donor alkylthiolate ligand supported both carbonate formation from atmospheric CO2 and the self-assembly of a novel bicapped puckered (CdS)6 molecular wheel. The remarkable stability of the complex was demonstrated by slow intermolecular ligand exchange on the (2)J(HH) and J((111/113)Cd(1)H) time scales at elevated temperature. Both CO2 and the base were required to convert amorphous "CdLClO4" precipitated in the absence of air to the carbonate complex. The complex shares structural features with the ζ-carbonic anhydrase class associating cadmium(II) with the biogeochemical cycling of carbon and is the first structurally characterized carbonate complex of any metal involving an alkylthiolate ligand.

Selective Detection of Pyrophosphate Anions in Aqueous Medium Using Aggregation of Perylene Diimide as a Fluorescent Probe.

Project description:A water-soluble perylene diimide, aspartic acid-functionalized perylene diimide (APDI), has shown significant sequential "turn-off" and "turn-on" responses toward Cu2+ and inorganic pyrophosphate (PPi), respectively. APDI was found to show selectivity toward Cu2+ and inorganic PPi over adenosine monophosphate, adenosine diphosphate, and adenosine triphosphate. The detection has been studied by absorption and emission spectroscopy techniques. Incorporation of Cu2+ into the solution of APDI results in a distinct quenching of the fluorescence intensity, while there was no spectral change in the presence of other metal ions. The formed APDI-Cu2+ ensemble can turn on its fluorescence signal when PPi is present. The detection of PPi could be traced by looking at the change in color of the solution under the naked eye. No interference was observed from other anions, making the APDI-Cu2+aggregate a highly selective biosensor for PPi.

Luminescent Naphthalene Diimide-Based Peptide in Aqueous Medium and in Solid State: Rewritable Fluorescent Color Code.

Project description:This study convincingly demonstrates a unique example of the self-assembly of a naphthalene diimide (NDI)-appended peptide into a fluorescent J-aggregate in aqueous media. Moreover, this aggregated species shows a remarkable yellow fluorescence in solid state, an unusual phenomenon for NDI-based compounds. The aggregated species has been characterized using transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, time-correlated single proton counting (TCSPC), UV-vis, and photoluminescence studies. TEM images reveal cross-linked nanofibrillar morphology of this aggregated species in water (pH 7.4). TCSPC study clearly indicates that the aggregated species in water has a higher average lifetime compared to that of the non-aggregated species. Interestingly, this NDI-based peptide shows H+ ion concentration-dependent change in the emission property in water. The fluorescence output is erased completely in the presence of an alkali, and it reappears in the presence of an acid, indicating its erasing and rewritable property. This indicates its probable use in authentication tools for security purposes as a rewritable fluorescence color code. This NDI-appended peptide-based molecule can be used for encryption of information due to erasing and rewritable property of the molecule in the aggregated state in aqueous medium.

Synthesis and Photocontrolled Supramolecular Self-Assembly of Azobenzene-Functionalized Perylene Bisimide Derivatives.

Project description:Azobenzene (Azo) units were successfully introduced into perylene bisimide (PBI) structures in order to realize the photocontrolling of the morphology of the supramolecular assembly of PBI by a photoisomerization process. A total of three Azo-functionalized perylene bisimide derivatives (PBI1, PBI2, and PBI3) with different alkyl chain lengths were designed and synthesized by imidization of 3,4,9,10-perylene tetracarboxylic dianhydride with the corresponding amines. The structures of these compounds were characterized by proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR) and matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF-MS). The photoisomerization behaviors of Azo units in PBIs were investigated using ultraviolet-visible (UV-VIS) absorption spectroscopy, which were obviously effected by solvents and the alkyl chain length. Furthermore, the photoisomerization of Azo units has the obviously regulatory effect on the morphology of supramolecular assembly of PBIs, especially for the medium-length alkyl chain-linked Azo-functionalized PBI derivative (PBI2). This research realized the photocontrolling of the morphology of the supramolecular assembly of PBI derivatives by photoisomerization of Azo units.
