The second messenger signaling molecule cyclic diguanylate monophosphate (c-di-GMP) drives the transition between planktonic and biofilm growth in many bacterial species. <i>Pseudomonas aeruginosa</i> has two surface sensing systems that produce c-di-GMP in response to surface adherence.
