Reliability and validity of the Chinese version of the Readiness for Hospital Discharge Scale-Parent Form in parents of preterm infants.

ABSTRACT:

Background

The Readiness for Hospital Discharge Scale (RHDS)-Parent Form shows satisfactory reliability and validity to assess the readiness of parents to take care of their children discharged from hospitals in Western countries. However, the reliability and validity of this instrument has not been evaluated in Chinese populations.

Objectives

Evaluate the psychometric features of the RHDS-Parent Form among Chinese parents of preterm infants.

Methods

The RHDS-Parent Form was translated into a Chinese version following an international instrument translation guideline. A total of 168 parents with preterm infants were recruited from the neonatal intensive care units of two tertiary-level hospitals in China. The internal consistency of this measure was assessed using the Cronbach's α coefficient; confirmatory factor analysis was conducted to evaluate the construct validity; and Pearson correlation coefficient was used to report the convergent validity.

Results

The Chinese version of RHDS (C-RHDS)-Parent Form included 22 items with 4 subscales, accounting for 56.71% of the total variance. The C-RHDS-Parent Form and its subscales showed good reliability (Cronbach's α values 0.78-0.92). This measure and its subscales showed positive correlations with the score of Quality of Discharge Teaching Scale.

Conclusion

The factor structure of C-RHDS-Parent Form is partially consistent with the original English version. Future studies are needed to explore the factors within this measure before it is widely used in Chinese clinical care settings.

Project description:Background:Measuring rehabilitation outcomes in patients with spinal cord injury (PWSCI) requires measurement tools that are valid and reliable and have been psychometrically tested in the population with spinal cord injury (SCI). The Readiness for Hospital Discharge Scale (RHDS) has been found to be reliable and valid in adult surgical patients, post-partum mothers, parents of hospitalised children and geriatrics. However, the psychometric properties have not yet been tested in the population with SCI, furthermore, in a South African context. Objectives:The purpose of this study was to psychometrically test the internal consistency and construct validity of the RHDS as a measure of discharge readiness in PWSCI prior to discharge from rehabilitation units in the Tshwane metropolitan area, South Africa. Method:A cross-sectional study that included 50 PWSCI who were in their last week of rehabilitation was conducted. The RHDS item and scale statistics were calculated by using descriptive statistics and the scale reliability was measured for internal consistency by using Cronbach's alpha coefficients. To determine construct validity, convergent and divergent validities were measured by using the RHDS items' correlation coefficient dimensions. All data were tested at the 0.05 level of significance by using Statistics and Data (STATA) statistical software, version 14. Results:Cronbach's alpha of the RHDS was 0.904, indicating an excellent reliability coefficient. Convergent validity scores showed 81% correlation coefficients, although divergent validity scores showed 62% correlation coefficients. Conclusion:The RHDS is a valid and reliable measure of readiness for discharge in a South African sample of PWSCI and can be used in SCI rehabilitation. Clinical implications:Over and above using the RHDS to determine if PWSCI are ready for discharge in the clinical setting, the RHDS may also assist health care practitioners to assess the patient's progress towards readiness and strategies for addressing shortcomings to meet short and long-term goals of the rehabilitation process.

Project description:BACKGROUND:Organizational change initiatives in health care frequently achieve only partial implementation success. Understanding an organizational readiness for change (ORC) may be a way to develop more effective and efficient change strategies. Denmark, like many countries, has begun a major system-wide structural reform which involves considerable changes in service delivery. Due to the lack of a validated Danish instrument, we aimed to translate and validate a Danish version of the Organizational Readiness for Implementing Change (ORIC) questionnaire. It measures if organizational members are confident in their collective commitment towards and ability (efficacy) to implement organizational change. ORIC is concise, grounded in theory, and designed, but not yet validated among employees in a real hospital setting. METHODS:The 12-item ORIC instrument was translated into Danish and back-translated to English. Employees (N = 284) at a hospital department facing a major organizational change in the Central Denmark Region completed the questionnaire. Face and content validity was ascertained. Exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and a confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) were used to assess construct validity. Reliability was assessed with Cronbach's alpha. Item response theory (Rasch analysis) was used to determine item and person reliability. RESULTS:Response rate was 72%. A two factor (commitment and efficacy), 11-item scale, of the Danish language ORIC was shown to be valid (CFI = .95, RMSEA = .067, and CMNI/DF = 2.32) and reliable (Cronbach's alpha 0.88) in a health care setting. Item response analysis confirmed acceptable person and item separation reliability. CONCLUSIONS:Our version of ORIC showed acceptable validity and reliability as an instrument for measuring readiness for implementing organizational change in a Danish-speaking health care population. For health care managers interested in evaluating their organizations and tailor change strategies, ORIC's brevity and theoretical underpinnings could make it an appealing and feasible tool to develop more successful change efforts.

Project description:BackgroundWeight bias, often known as fat phobia or weight stigma, refers to unfavorable attitudes and stereotypes that are associated with, and applied to, larger bodies. Fat phobia can include an unreasonable and abnormal dread of being overweight or being associated with obese people. Currently, there is no validated tool available to measure fat phobia in Arabic. Measuring fat phobia in Arabic-speaking populations is crucial, because cultural attitudes toward body weight can be quite negative and discriminatory; these negative attitudes can negatively impact mental health. The current study aimed to adapt, translate, and assess the structural validity of the Fat Phobia Scale-Short Form (F-Scale 14) in Arabic.MethodsThe gold standard approach to translation was used. Forward translation involved translation from the English language to the Arabic language by independent translators. Subsequently, a back-translation review was performed on the translated Arabic version for comparison with the original language. A cross-sectional study was conducted online that included 1246 participants from 22 Arabic countries, of whom 74% were female, 66% single, 83% university graduates, with a mean age of 35 ± 6 years.ResultsThe F-Scale 14 demonstrated good reliability in the Arabic language, with a Cronbach's α of 0.82 (95% CI 0.80-0.83), comparable to the original scale. The test-retest reliability of the scale was 0.92 (95% CI 0.90-0.94). According to the fit indices, the F-Scale 14 demonstrated a satisfactory level of structural validity in Arab cultures. Fit indices are statistical measures used in confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) to assess how well a proposed model fits the observed data. The scale showed a small improvement in factorial structure after the removal of some items. The two items removed were self-indulgent versus self-sacrificing and disliking food versus likes food. The correlation between F-Scale 14 and the figure rating scale was r = 0.76 (p < 0.001), suggesting adequate convergent validity.ConclusionsThe F-Scale 14 is a crucial indicator of attitudes and opinions concerning obese or overweight individuals. Based on increased internal consistency reliability and the problematic cultural relevance of two items, we recommend adopting a 12-item version of the scale for better cultural relevance in Arabic populations. It is anticipated that the Arabic F-Scale-12 will be highly useful for research and clinical purposes. Future research should test and adapt the Fat Phobia Scale for diverse Arabic populations to ensure its cultural relevance. Exploring its application in clinical settings will enhance our understanding of weight stigma and inform targeted interventions that promote body positivity. By addressing these areas, we can develop effective strategies to foster healthier attitudes toward body image in Arabic communities.Level vEvidence obtained from a cross-sectional descriptive study.

Project description:BackgroundParenting a preterm infant can be incredibly challenging and stressful, particularly in the first year after discharge. Desirable parental role adaptation leads to appropriate parenting behaviors and parent-infant interaction, which are essential to child health and development.AimTo investigate the level of parental role adaptation and its influencing factors among parents of preterm infants in the first year after hospital discharge according to Belsky's parenting process model among parents of preterm infants in the first year after hospital discharge.MethodsA cross-sectional study design was adopted using convenience sampling. Data were collected using the Parental Role Adaptation Scale (PRAS) in parents with preterm infants, the Perceived Social Support Scale (PSSS), the Coping Adaptation Processing Scale (CAPS-15), and a sociodemographic questionnaire. Descriptive statistics, non-parametric tests, Spearman correlation analyses, and multivariate linear regression were used to analyze the data.ResultsIn total, 300 Chinese parents were included in the analysis. In the multivariate analysis, first-time parent (p = 0.003), master's degree and above (p = 0.042), coping adaptation processing (p = 0.000), residence location (towns: p = 0.019, city: p = 0.028), monthly family income (6000-10,000: p = 0.000, >10,000: p = 0.000), and perceived social support (p = 0.001) were all significant predictors of parental role adaptation and collectively accounted for 56.8% of the variation in parental role adaptation of parents with preterm infants (F = 16.473, p < 0.001). Coping adaptation processing mediated the relationship between perceived social support and parental role adaptation (95% bootstrap CI = 0.022, 0.130).ConclusionChinese parents of preterm infants experience a moderate level of parental role adaptation when their child is discharged from the hospital to home. Parents who are not first-time parents, have master's degrees or above, live in towns or cities, have higher coping and adaptation abilities, have high monthly family income, and greater perceived social support have a higher level of parental role adaptation. Healthcare providers should pay more attention to parents with low socioeconomic status and encourage them to improve their coping and adaptation abilities and to utilize their formal and informal social support networks.

Project description:PurposeThis study aims to establish a Turkish version of the scales of perceived stigma amongst children with epilepsy and their parents by adopting the scales developed by Austin et al. This study also aims to analyse the scales' validity and reliability in evaluating stigma perceptions amongst the aforementioned population.MethodsThe population of this methodological study consisted of parents and 85 epileptic children between 9 and 16 years old. This population visited the paediatric neurology clinic of a hospital in Erzurum Province, Turkey, between April 2015 and January 2016. The scales of perceived stigma amongst children with epilepsy and their parents, as well as its Turkish version, were used as measuring tools. Experts were also consulted for their opinions. Meanwhile, Bartlett's test, Kaiser-Meyer-Olkin (KMO) index, exploratory factor analysis, principal component analysis, varimax rotation and scree plot test were used to determine the validity of the study. Moreover, the coefficients of Cronbach's α and Pearson's product-moment correlation were used to identify internal consistency, homogeneity and thus reliability.ResultsEvaluations and analyses indicated that the Turkish version of the child and parent scales can be used with a single dimension. The mean scores of such scales were 24.02 ± 8.47 and 15.68 ± 4.04, respectively. All item-total score correlations of the child and parent scales were found to be significant (P < 0.05). The KMO coefficient of the child scale was 0.94, whereas the chi-square value of Bartlett's test of sphericity was significant at 209.311 (P < 0.05). Moreover, the KMO coefficient of the parent scale was found to be 0.80, whereas the chi-square value of Bartlett's test of sphericity was found to be significant at 209.311 (P < 0.05). The Cronbach's α coefficients were 0.95 and 0.87 for the child and parent scales, respectively.ConclusionThe Turkish version of the child and parent scales of perceived stigma is valid and reliable in measuring the perception of stigma amongst children with epilepsy and their parents.

Project description:BackgroundPatients transitioning between different care contexts are at increased risk of experiencing adverse events. In particular, being discharged to home after inpatient treatment involves significant risks. However, there is a lack of valid and internationally comparable assessment tools on patients' experiences of difficulties following hospital discharge. Therefore, this study aimed to adapt and validate the German version of the post-discharge coping difficulty scale (PDCDS-G).MethodsPatients were recruited at a German university hospital. 815 adult patients participated in a self-report survey following an inpatient stay of at least three days. Factorial validity of the PDCDS-G was evaluated via factor analyses. Further, examination of measurement invariance was performed. To establish criterion validity, associations with patients' self-reported health status and occurrence of patient safety were determined. Further, group differences regarding patient characteristics, hospitalization factors, and survey-related variables were examined.ResultsFactorial validity of the PDCDS-G was confirmed by a two-factorial model with good model fit. Both factors showed good to excellent reliability. The two-factor model achieved measurement invariance across all patient characteristics, hospitalization factors, and survey-related variables. Significant relationships with patients' health status and the occurrence of patient safety incidents corroborate criterion validity of the PDCDS-G. Differential associations of the two PDCDS-G factors regarding patient characteristics, hospitalization, and survey-related variables were found.DiscussionConstruct and criterion validity, as well as the reliability of the PDCDS-G, were verified. Further, instrument's measurement invariance was confirmed allowing use of the scale for the interpretation of group differences and comparisons between studies.ConclusionsThe PDCDS-G provides a validated and comparable patient-reported outcomes measure for patient experiences after hospital discharge to home. The PDCDS-G can be used for patient surveys in quality or patient safety improvement in care transition processes.
