Rocking Chair Desalination Battery Based on Prussian Blue Electrodes.

ABSTRACT: The demand for fresh water has been increasing, caused by the growing population and industrialization throughout the world. In this study, we report a capacitive-based desalination system using Prussian blue materials in a rocking chair desalination battery, which is composed of sodium nickel hexacyanoferrate (NaNiHCF) and sodium iron HCF (NaFeHCF) electrodes. In this system, ions are removed not only by charging steps but also by discharging steps, and it is possible to treat actual seawater with this system because the Prussian blue material has a high charge capacity with a reversible reaction of alkaline cations. Here, we demonstrate a rocking chair desalination battery to desalt seawater, and the results show that this system has a high desalination capacity (59.9 mg/g) with efficient energy consumption (0.34 Wh/L for 40% Na ion removal efficiency).

A Rocking-chair Rechargeable Seawater Battery.

Project description:Seawater batteries are attracting continuous attention because seawater as an electrolyte is inexhaustible, eco-friendly, and free of charge. However, the rechargeable seawater batteries developed nowadays show poor reversibility and short cycle life, due to the very limited electrode materials and complicated yet inappropriate working mechanism. Here, we propose a rechargeable seawater battery that works through a rocking-chair mechanism encountered in commercial lithium ion batteries, enabled by intercalation-type inorganic electrode materials of open-framework-type cathode and Na-ion conducting membrane-type anode. The rechargeable seawater battery achieves a high specific energy of 80.0 Wh/kg at 1,226.9 W/kg and a high specific power of 7,495.0 W/kg at 23.7 Wh/kg. Additionally, it exhibits excellent cycling stability, retaining 66.3% of its capacity over 1,000 cycles. This work represents a promising avenue for developing sustainable aqueous batteries with low costs.

Egyptian blue: from pigment to battery electrodes.

Project description:Herein we report on using Egyptian blue as an anode material for Li-ion batteries. A 1st cycle lithiation capacity of 594 mA h g-1 and reversible capacity of 210 mA h g-1 at 20 mA g-1, and at 500 mA g-1 a reversible capacity of 120 mA h g-1 (stable over 1000 cycles) were achieved with coulombic efficiency more than 99.5%. Using X-ray diffraction, and FTIR and X-ray absorption spectroscopies we found that the material goes through a conversion reaction during the 1st cycle that results in the formation of amorphous mixed oxides with copper nanoclusters.

Effect of Surface Charge on the Fabrication of Hierarchical Mn-Based Prussian Blue Analogue for Capacitive Desalination.

Project description:Multiple and hierarchical manganese (Mn)-based Prussian blue analogues obtained on different substrates are successfully prepared using a universal, facile, and simple strategy. Different functional groups and surface charge distributions on carbon cloth have significant effects on the morphologies and nanostructures of Mn-based Prussian blue analogues, thereby indirectly affecting their physicochemical properties. Combined with the advantages of the modified carbon cloth and the nanostructured Mn-based Prussian blue analogues, the composite with negative surface charge formed by the electronegativity differences shows good electrochemical properties, leading to improvement in charge efficiency during capacitive desalination. An asymmetric device fabricated with Mn-based Prussian blue analogue-modified F-doped carbon cloth as the cathode and acid-treated carbon cloth as the anode presents the highest salt adsorption capacity of 10.92 mg g-1 with a charge efficiency of 82.28% and the lowest energy consumption of 0.45 kW h m-3 at 1 V due to the main influencing factor from the negative surface charge leading to co-ion expulsion boosting the capacitive deionization performance. We provide insights for further exploration of the relationship between second-phase materials and carbon cloth, while offering some guidance for the design and preparation of electrodes for desalination and beyond.

Self-powered fluorescence display devices based on a fast self-charging/recharging battery (Mg/Prussian blue).

Project description:Stimuli-responsive (such as voltage and/or light) fluorescence display systems have attracted particular attention in their promising fields of application. However, there are few examples of self-powered fluorescence display devices. Here we designed and fabricated a self-powered fluorescence display device based on a fast-charging/recharging battery. The specially designed battery was composed of a Prussian blue (PB) cathode and a magnesium metal anode with a high theoretical redox potential difference (∼2.8 V). Moreover, smartly adding a trace amount of NaClO in the electrolyte could realize oxidizing PW to PB ∼480 times faster than when oxidizing without NaClO, leading to the fast self-charging and high power density (maximum power density of 13.34 mW cm-2, about two to three orders of magnitude larger than previous bio-fuel cells) of the Mg/PB battery. Most importantly, PB was used as not only the cathodic catalyst but also as an electrochromic material, making it possible to construct a self-powered and rechargeable electrochromic fluorescence display with only two electrodes. Besides, fluorescent [Ru(bpy)3]2+-doped silica nanoparticles (Ru@SiO2), were selected as the fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) donor to match PB (FRET acceptor). To the best of our knowledge, we demonstrated a self-powered and rechargeable electrochromic fluorescence display with only two electrodes for the first time.

Few-Atomic-Layered Co-Doped BiOBr Nanosheet: Free-Standing Anode with Ultrahigh Mass Loading for "Rocking Chair" Zinc-Ion Battery.

Project description:Insertion host materials are considered as a candidate to replace metallic Zn anode. However, the high mass loading anode with good electrochemical performances is reported rarely. Herein, a few-atomic-layered Co-doped BiOBr nanosheet (Co-UTBiOBr) is prepared via one-step hydrothermal method and a free-standing flexible electrode consisting of Co-UTBiOBr and CNTs is designed. Ultrathin nanosheet (3 atomic layers) and CNTs accelerate Zn2+ and electron transfer respectively. The Co-doping is conducive to the reduced Zn2+ diffusion barrier, the improved volume expansion after Zn2+ intercalation, and the enhanced electronic conductivity of BiOBr, verified by experimental and theoretical studies. An insertion-conversion mechanism is proposed according to ex situ characterizations. Benefiting from many advantages, Co-UTBiOBr displays a high capacity of 150 mAh g-1 at 0.1 A g-1 and a long-term cyclic life with ≈100% capacity attention over 3000 cycles at 1 A g-1 . Remarkably, excellent electrochemical performances are maintained even at an ultrahigh mass loading of 15 mg cm-2 . Co-UTBiOBr//MnO2 "rocking chair" zinc-ion battery exhibits a stable capacity of ≈130 mAh g-1 at 0.2 A g-1 during cyclic test and its flexible quasi-solid-state battery shows outstanding stability under various bending states. This work provides a new idea for designing high mass loading anode.

Stable cycling of Prussian blue/Zn battery in a nonflammable aqueous/organic hybrid electrolyte.

Project description:Although rechargeable aqueous batteries are attracting increasing attention in recent years due to high safety, low cost, high power density and environmental friendliness, the aqueous batteries suffer from limited cycle life due to a narrow electrochemical window of the aqueous electrolytes, severe side reaction and instability of electrode materials in aqueous electrolytes. In this work, we propose a hybrid aqueous electrolyte with a mixed solvent of water and acetonitrile (ACN), which exhibits a wide electrochemical window, high ionic conductivity, and nonflammability. An aqueous battery with an iron hexacyanoferrate (FeHCF) cathode, Zn anode and H2O/ACN hybrid electrolyte shows a high capacity of 69.1 mA h g-1 at 10C (89.5% relative to that at 1C) and an extremely long cycle life with 51.4% capacity retention after 19 000 cycles at 10C. The excellent cycling performance of the aqueous FeHCF/Zn batteries can be attributed to the reduced water activity and extended electrochemical window because of the strong hydrogen-bonding interaction between ACN and H2O. Besides, the large particle size and good crystallization of FeHCF can inhibit its dissolution in the aqueous electrolyte which further improves cycling performance. This work will shed light on the design of safe aqueous batteries for applications in large-scale energy storage.

Metal-free aqueous redox capacitor via proton rocking-chair system in an organic-based couple.

Project description:Safe and inexpensive energy storage devices with long cycle lifetimes and high power and energy densities are mandatory for the development of electrical power grids that connect with renewable energy sources. In this study, we demonstrated metal-free aqueous redox capacitors using couples comprising low-molecular-weight organic compounds. In addition to the electric double layer formation, proton insertion/extraction reactions between a couple consisting of inexpensive quinones/hydroquinones contributed to the energy storage. This energy storage mechanism, in which protons are shuttled back and forth between two electrodes upon charge and discharge, can be regarded as a proton rocking-chair system. The fabricated capacitor showed a large capacity (>20 Wh/kg), even in the applied potential range between 0-1 V, and high power capability (>5 A/g). The support of the organic compounds in nanoporous carbon facilitated the efficient use of the organic compounds with a lifetime of thousands of cycles.

<i>In situ</i> polyaniline coating of Prussian blue as cathode material for sodium-ion battery.

Project description:Prussian blue (PB) has great potential for use as a sodium cathode material owing to its high working potential and cube frame structure. Herein, this work reports a two-step method to synthesize PB with ascorbic acid as the ball-milling additive, which improves the electrochemical rate performance of PB during the traditional co-precipitation method. The obtained PB sample exhibited a superior specific capability (113.3 mAh g-1 even at 20 C, 1 C = 170 mA g-1) and a specific capacity retention of 84.8% after 100 cycles at 1 C rate. In order to enhance the cycling performance of the PB, an in situ polyaniline coating strategy was employed in which aniline was added into the electrolyte and polymerized under electrochemical conditions. The coated anode exhibited a high specific capacity retention of 62.7% after 500 cycles, which is significantly higher than that of the non-coated sample, which only remains 40.1% after 500 cycles. This development has shown a great potential as a low-cost, high-performance and environment-friendly technology for large-scale industrial application of PB.

Prussian blue-based theranostics for ameliorating acute kidney injury.

Project description:BackgroundAcute kidney injury (AKI) with high mortality rates is associated with an excess of reactive oxygen/nitrogen species (RONS) within kidney tissues. Recently, nanomedicine antioxidant therapy has been used to alleviate AKI. Herein, we synthesized ultrasmall Prussian blue nanozymes (PB NZs, 4.5 nm) as theranostic agents for magnetic resonance (MR)/photoacoustic (PA) dual-modal imaging guided AKI treatment.ResultsPB NZs exhibited multi-enzyme mimetic abilities, promoting the effective elimination of RONS both in vitro and in vivo. Moreover, benefiting from their imaging contrast properties, the rapid renal accumulation of PB NZs was verified by in vivo PA/MR dual-modal imaging. Due to their excellent enrichment in the kidney and unique multi-enzyme mimetic abilities, ultrasmall PB NZs displayed superior AKI treatment efficacy compared with that of amifostine in two clinically relevant types of AKI induced murine models (either by rhabdomyolysis or cisplatin).ConclusionOur findings suggested ultrasmall PB NZs, as nanozyme theranostics, have great potential for AKI management.

Acid-Assisted Ball Mill Synthesis of Carboxyl-Functional-Group-Modified Prussian Blue as Sodium-Ion Battery Cathode.

Project description:Prussian blue attracts the attention of many researchers as a promising candidate for use in sodium-ion battery cathodes due to its open frameworks and high working potential. However, the interstitial water in its crystal structure and its poor electronic conductivity limits its performance in practical sodium-ion batteries. Here, acid-assisted ball milling synthesis was employed as a versatile method for the production of surface-modified Prussian blue. With (CH3COO)2Fe being used as the raw material, the Prussian blue produced using ball milling synthesis was modified by the carboxyl functional group on its surface, which resulted in lower interstitial water content and enhanced electrochemical cycling performance. In addition, ball milling synthesis provided the as-prepared Prussian blue with a large surface area, improving its electrochemical rate performance. When used as the cathode of sodium-ion batteries, as-prepared Prussian blue delivered a specific capacity of 145.3 mAh g-1 at 0.2 C and 113.7 mAh g-1 at 1 C, maintaining 54.5% of the initial capacity after 1000 cycles at 1 C (1 C = 170 mA g-1). Furthermore, a solid-state sodium-ion battery was mounted, with as-prepared Prussian blue being employed as the cathode and Na metal as the anode, which delivered a high specific capacity of 128.7 mAh g-1 at 0.2 C. The present study put forward an effective solution to overcome the limitations of Prussian blue for its commercial application.
