Single Crystal Growth of Hybrid Lead Bromide Perovskites Using a Spin-Coating Method.

ABSTRACT: Synthesis and studies of single crystals of hybrid perovskite are important for achieving a better understanding of the optoelectronic phenomena occurring in this material and for improving ongoing applications. Here, we report on the growth of micrometer-size single crystals of methylammonium lead bromide (MAPbBr₃) using the spin coating deposition method on a quartz substrate. We studied the influence of the rotation speed and the use of three different additives N-cyclohexyl-2-pyrrolidone, dimethyl sulfoxide, and 4-tert-butylpyridine on the crystal size and shape. The introduction of an additive in the precursor solution is revealed to be very useful for obtaining crystals with well-defined geometries and for decreasing the amount of defects. In this way, high-quality single crystals that sustain optical resonating modes were obtained and characterized by transmittance and photoluminescence measurements.

Scanning Photocurrent Microscopy in Single Crystal Multidimensional Hybrid Lead Bromide Perovskites.

Project description:We investigated solution-grown single crystals of multidimensional 2D-3D hybrid lead bromide perovskites using spatially resolved photocurrent and photoluminescence. Scanning photocurrent microscopy (SPCM) measurements where the electrodes consisted of a dip probe contact and a back contact. The crystals revealed significant differences between 3D and multidimensional 2D-3D perovskites under biased detection, not only in terms of photocarrier decay length values but also in the spatial dynamics across the crystal. In general, the photocurrent maps indicate that the closer the border proximity, the shorter the effective decay length, thus suggesting a determinant role of the border recombination centers in monocrystalline samples. In this case, multidimensional 2D-3D perovskites exhibited a simple fitting model consisting of a single exponential, while 3D perovskites demonstrated two distinct charge carrier migration dynamics within the crystal: fast and slow. Although the first one matches that of the 2D-3D perovskite, the long decay of the 3D sample exhibits a value two orders of magnitude larger. This difference could be attributed to the presence of interlayer screening and a larger exciton binding energy of the multidimensional 2D-3D perovskites with respect to their 3D counterparts.

Spin-dependent charge transport through 2D chiral hybrid lead-iodide perovskites.

Project description:Chiral-induced spin selectivity (CISS) occurs when the chirality of the transporting medium selects one of the two spin ½ states to transport through the media while blocking the other. Monolayers of chiral organic molecules demonstrate CISS but are limited in their efficiency and utility by the requirement of a monolayer to preserve the spin selectivity. We demonstrate CISS in a system that integrates an inorganic framework with a chiral organic sublattice inducing chirality to the hybrid system. Using magnetic conductive-probe atomic force microscopy, we find that oriented chiral 2D-layered Pb-iodide organic/inorganic hybrid perovskite systems exhibit CISS. Electron transport through the perovskite films depends on the magnetization of the probe tip and the handedness of the chiral molecule. The films achieve a highest spin-polarization transport of up to 86%. Magnetoresistance studies in modified spin-valve devices having only one ferromagnet electrode confirm the occurrence of spin-dependent charge transport through the organic/inorganic layers.

Solution-Processed Faraday Rotators Using Single Crystal Lead Halide Perovskites.

Project description:Lead halide perovskites (LHPs) have become a promising alternative for a wide range of optoelectronic devices, thanks to their solution-processability and impressive optical and electrical properties. More recently, LHPs have been investigated in magneto-optic studies and have exhibited spin-polarized emission, photoinduced magnetization, and long spin lifetimes. Here, the viability of methylammonium lead bromide (MAPbBr3) single crystals as solution-processed Faraday rotators is demonstrated. Compared to terbium gallium garnet, the industry standard in the visible, it is found that MAPbBr3 exhibits Verdet constants (i.e., strength of Faraday effect) of similar or greater magnitude (up to 2.5x higher), with lower temperature dependence. Due to its low trap absorption, it is calculated that an optical isolator made from MAPbBr3, with appropriate antireflection coatings, should reach ≈95% transmission and achieve 40 dB isolation for incoming powers of over 2 W. It is also shown that the Verdet constant of MAPbBr3 can be calculated accurately from its dispersion in refractive index, allowing the possibility to predict similar effects in other perovskite materials.

Mahan excitons in room-temperature methylammonium lead bromide perovskites.

Project description:In a seminal paper, Mahan predicted that excitonic bound states can still exist in a semiconductor at electron-hole densities above the insulator-to-metal Mott transition. However, no clear evidence for this exotic quasiparticle, dubbed Mahan exciton, exists to date at room temperature. In this work, we combine ultrafast broadband optical spectroscopy and advanced many-body calculations to reveal that organic-inorganic lead-bromide perovskites host Mahan excitons at room temperature. Persistence of the Wannier exciton peak and the enhancement of the above-bandgap absorption are observed at all achievable photoexcitation densities, well above the Mott density. This is supported by the solution of the semiconductor Bloch equations, which confirms that no sharp transition between the insulating and conductive phase occurs. Our results demonstrate the robustness of the bound states in a regime where exciton dissociation is otherwise expected, and offer promising perspectives in fundamental physics and in room-temperature applications involving high densities of charge carriers.

Extreme-Ultraviolet Excited Scintillation of Methylammonium Lead Bromide Perovskites.

Project description:Inorganic-Organic lead halide materials have been recognized as potential high-energy X-ray detectors because of their high quantum efficiencies and radiation hardness. Surprisingly little is known about whether the same is true for extreme-ultraviolet (XUV) radiation, despite applications in nuclear fusion research and astrophysics. We used a table-top high-harmonic generation setup in the XUV range between 20 and 45 eV to photoexcite methylammonium lead bromide (MAPbBr3) and measure its scintillation properties. The strong absorbance combined with multiple carriers being excited per photon yield a very high carrier density at the surface, triggering photobleaching reactions that rapidly reduce the emission intensity. Concurrent to and in spite of this photobleaching, a recovery of the emission intensity as a function of dose was observed. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction measurements of XUV-exposed and unexposed areas show that this recovery is caused by XUV-induced oxidation of MAPbBr3, which removes trap states that normally quench emission, thus counteracting the rapid photobleaching caused by the extremely high carrier densities. Furthermore, it was found that preoxidizing the sample with ozone was able to prolong and improve this intensity recovery, highlighting the impact of surface passivation on the scintillation properties of perovskite materials in the XUV range.

Bond Polarizability as a Probe of Local Crystal Fields in Hybrid Lead-Halide Perovskites.

Project description:A rotating organic cation and a dynamically disordered soft inorganic cage are the hallmark features of organic-inorganic lead-halide perovskites. Understanding the interplay between these two subsystems is a challenging problem, but it is this coupling that is widely conjectured to be responsible for the unique behavior of photocarriers in these materials. In this work, we use the fact that the polarizability of the organic cation strongly depends on the ambient electrostatic environment to put the molecule forward as a sensitive probe of the local crystal fields inside the lattice cell. We measure the average polarizability of the C/N-H bond stretching mode by means of infrared spectroscopy, which allows us to deduce the character of the motion of the cation molecule, find the magnitude of the local crystal field, and place an estimate on the strength of the hydrogen bond between the hydrogen and halide atoms. Our results pave the way for understanding electric fields in lead-halide perovskites using infrared bond spectroscopy.

High-Pressure Single-Crystal Structures of 3D Lead-Halide Hybrid Perovskites and Pressure Effects on their Electronic and Optical Properties.

Project description:We report the first high-pressure single-crystal structures of hybrid perovskites. The crystalline semiconductors (MA)PbX3 (MA = CH3NH3 (+), X = Br(-) or I(-)) afford us the rare opportunity of understanding how compression modulates their structures and thereby their optoelectronic properties. Using atomic coordinates obtained from high-pressure single-crystal X-ray diffraction we track the perovskites' precise structural evolution upon compression. These structural changes correlate well with pressure-dependent single-crystal photoluminescence (PL) spectra and high-pressure bandgaps derived from density functional theory. We further observe dramatic piezochromism where the solids become lighter in color and then transition to opaque black with compression. Indeed, electronic conductivity measurements of (MA)PbI3 obtained within a diamond-anvil cell show that the material's resistivity decreases by 3 orders of magnitude between 0 and 51 GPa. The activation energy for conduction at 51 GPa is only 13.2(3) meV, suggesting that the perovskite is approaching a metallic state. Furthermore, the pressure response of mixed-halide perovskites shows new luminescent states that emerge at elevated pressures. We recently reported that the perovskites (MA)Pb(Br x I1-x )3 (0.2 < x < 1) reversibly form light-induced trap states, which pin their PL to a low energy. This may explain the low voltages obtained from solar cells employing these absorbers. Our high-pressure PL data indicate that compression can mitigate this PL redshift and may afford higher steady-state voltages from these absorbers. These studies show that pressure can significantly alter the transport and thermodynamic properties of these technologically important semiconductors.

Cesium Lead Bromide Perovskites: Synthesis, Stability, and Photoluminescence Quantum Yield Enhancement by Hexadecyltrimethylammonium Bromide Doping.

Project description:Perovskite nanoparticles having a crystalline structure have attracted scientists' attention due to their great potential in optoelectronic and scintillation applications. The photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) is one of the main critical photophysical properties of the perovskite nanoparticles. Unfortunately, the main limitation of cesium lead halide perovskites is their instability in an ambient atmosphere, where they undergo a rapid chemical decomposition within time. For this purpose, hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) was used as a surfactant dopant to test in the first place its effect on the stability of CsPbBr3 perovskites and on the PLQY values of the prepared perovskites. The addition of CTAB has proven its efficiency in the formed CsPbBr3 nanoparticles by increasing their thermal stability and by enhancing their PLQY up to 75%. These results were obtained after the successful preparation of CsPbBr3 perovskite nanoparticles by optimizing three different reaction parameters, starting from the time of the reaction, moving to the concentration of lead bromide, and ending with the concentration of cesium oleate. Therefore, it was found that the most stable CsPbBr3 perovskites were formed when mixing 0.15 g of lead bromide heated for 40 min with a volume of 1.2 mL of cesium oleate.

Resonantly Pumped Bright-Triplet Exciton Lasing in Cesium Lead Bromide Perovskites.

Project description:The surprising recent observation of highly emissive triplet-states in lead halide perovskites accounts for their orders-of-magnitude brighter optical signals and high quantum efficiencies compared to other semiconductors. This makes them attractive for future optoelectronic applications, especially in bright low-threshold nanolasers. While nonresonantly pumped lasing from all-inorganic lead-halide perovskites is now well-established as an attractive pathway to scalable low-power laser sources for nano-optoelectronics, here we showcase a resonant optical pumping scheme on a fast triplet-state in CsPbBr3 nanocrystals. The scheme allows us to realize a polarized triplet-laser source that dramatically enhances the coherent signal by 1 order of magnitude while suppressing noncoherent contributions. The result is a source with highly attractive technological characteristics, including a bright and polarized signal and a high stimulated-to-spontaneous emission signal contrast that can be filtered to enhance spectral purity. The emission is generated by pumping selectively on a weakly confined excitonic state with a Bohr radius ∼10 nm in the nanocrystals. The exciton fine-structure is revealed by the energy-splitting resulting from confinement in nanocrystals with tetragonal symmetry. We use a linear polarizer to resolve 2-fold nondegenerate sublevels in the triplet exciton and use photoluminescence excitation spectroscopy to determine the energy of the state before pumping it resonantly.
