Plasmon Tunability of Gold Nanostars at the Tip Apexes.

ABSTRACT: Herein, we present an optimized bottom-up approach to fabricate homogeneous Au nanostars with plasmon resonances fully tunable between the red and the infrared. The synthetic method relies on the kinetic control of the reaction upon optimization of the reactant concentrations (i.e., gold seeds, reducing agent, and gold salt). Optical enhancing properties of the obtained materials are demonstrated by using SERS with visible and infrared lasers.

Cooperation of Hot Holes and Surface Adsorbates in Plasmon-Driven Anisotropic Growth of Gold Nanostars.

Project description:Light-driven synthesis of plasmonic metal nanostructures has garnered broad scientific interests. Although it has been widely accepted that surface plasmon resonance (SPR)-generated energetic electrons play an essential role in this photochemical process, the exact function of plasmon-generated hot holes in regulating the morphology of nanostructures has not been fully explored. Herein, we discover that those hot holes work with surface adsorbates collectively to control the anisotropic growth of gold (Au) nanostructures. Specifically, it is found that hot holes stabilized by surface adsorbed iodide enable the site-selective oxidative etching of Au0, which leads to nonuniform growths along different lateral directions to form six-pointed Au nanostars. Our studies establish a molecular-level understanding of the mechanism behind the plasmon-driven synthesis of Au nanostars and illustrate the importance of cooperation between charge carriers and surface adsorbates in regulating the morphology evolution of plasmonic nanostructures.

Extinction Coefficient of Gold Nanostars.

Project description:Gold nanostars (NStars) are highly attractive for biological applications due to their surface chemistry, facile synthesis and optical properties. Here, we synthesize NStars in HEPES buffer at different HEPES/Au ratios, producing NStars of different sizes and shapes, and therefore varying optical properties. We measure the extinction coefficient of the synthesized NStars at their maximum surface plasmon resonances (SPR), which range from 5.7 × 108 to 26.8 × 108 M-1cm-1. Measured values correlate with those obtained from theoretical models of the NStars using the discrete dipole approximation (DDA), which we use to simulate the extinction spectra of the nanostars. Finally, because NStars are typically used in biological applications, we conjugate DNA and antibodies to the NStars and calculate the footprint of the bound biomolecules.

Manipulating acoustic and plasmonic modes in gold nanostars.

Project description:In this contribution experimental evidence of plasmonic edge modes and acoustic breathing modes in gold nanostars (AuNSs) is reported. AuNSs are synthesized by a surfactant-free, one-step wet-chemistry method. Optical extinction measurements of AuNSs confirm the presence of localized surface plasmon resonances (LSPRs), while electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS) using a scanning transmission electron microscope (STEM) shows the spatial distribution of LSPRs and reveals the presence of acoustic breathing modes. Plasmonic hot-spots generated at the pinnacle of the sharp spikes, due to the optically active dipolar edge mode, allow significant intensity enhancement of local fields and hot-electron injection, and are thus useful for size detection of small protein molecules. The breathing modes observed away from the apices of the nanostars are identified as stimulated dark modes - they have an acoustic nature - and likely originate from the confinement of the surface plasmon by the geometrical boundaries of a nanostructure. The presence of both types of modes is verified by numerical simulations. Both these modes offer the possibility of designing nanoplasmonic antennas based on AuNSs, which can provide information on both mass and polarizability of biomolecules using a two-step molecular detection process.

Plasmon-resonant nanoparticles and nanostars with magnetic cores: synthesis and magnetomotive imaging.

Project description:Plasmon-resonant gold nanostars (NSTs) with magnetic cores were synthesized by a multistep sequence from superparamagnetic Fe3O4 nanoparticles (NPs) and evaluated as optical contrast agents under magnetomotive (MM) imaging conditions. Core-shell Fe3O4@Au NPs were prepared in nonpolar organic solvents with nanometer control over shell thickness and with good epitaxy to the Fe3O4 surface. Anisotropic growth was performed in micellar solutions of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) under mildly reducing conditions, resulting in NSTs with physical features similar to those produced from colloidal gold seeds. NSTs could be produced below 100 nm from tip to tip, but seed size had a significant impact on growth habit, with larger seed particles producing submicrometer-sized "morning stars". Both NSTs and aggregated core-shell NPs are responsive to in-plane magnetic field gradients and can provide enhanced near-infrared (NIR) contrast under MM conditions, but do so by different mechanisms. NSTs can modulate polarized NIR scattering with minimal translational motion, giving the appearance of a periodic but stationary "blinking", whereas core-shell NP aggregates require lateral displacement for signal modulation. The polarization-sensitive MM imaging modality offers the dual advantage of enhanced signal quality and reduced background signal and can be applied toward the detection of magnetomotive NSTs in heterogeneous biological samples, as illustrated by their detection inside of granular cells such as macrophages.

Modified HEPES one-pot synthetic strategy for gold nanostars.

Project description:Gold nanostars are being used more regularly in the biosensing field. Despite their useful attributes, there is still a need to optimize aspects of the synthesis and stability. The seedless, synthetic method comprising 4-(2-hydroxyethyl)-1-piperazineethanesulfonic acid (HEPES) is a facile, rapid method; however, it produces heteromorphic nanostars. The modification of a HEPES method resulted in a silver-assisted, seedless gold nanostar synthesis method. The nanostars resulting from this method were monodispersed, multi-branched and approximately 37 ± 2 nm in diameter. It proved to be a repeatable method that produced homogeneous and robust nanostars. Once functionalized with polyvinylpyrrolidone 10 000, the new nanostars were observed to be stable in various environments such as salt, ionic strength and cell culture medium. In conclusion, the addition of the silver nitrate improved the morphology of the reported HEPES nanostars for the purpose of nanobiosensor development.

Cathodoluminescence and tip-plasmon resonance of Bi2Te3 triangular nanostructures.

Project description:Bi2Te3, as a topological insulator, is able to support plasmonic emission in the visible spectral range. Thin Bi2Te3 flakes can be exfoliated directly from a Bi2Te3 crystal, and the shape of Bi2Te3 flakes can be further modified by focused ion beam milling. Therefore, we have designed a Bi2Te3 triangular antenna with distinct tip angles for the application of plasmonic resonance. The plasmonic emission of the Bi2Te3 triangular antenna is excited and investigated by cathodoluminescence in the scanning electron microscope. Enhanced tip plasmons have been observed from distinct tips with angles of 20º, 36º, 54º, 70º, and 90º, respectively. Due to the confinement of geometric boundaries for oscillating charges, the resonant peak position of tip plasmon with a smaller angle has a blue shift. Moreover, the dependence of plasmonic behavior on the excitation position has been discovered as well. This research provides a unique approach to fabricate Bi2Te3 nanostructures and manipulate the corresponding plasmonic properties.

Limitations on the optical tunability of small diameter gold nanoshells.

Project description:Gold (Au) nanoshells were grown on silica nanoparticles with differing average diameters, ranging from 30 to 120 nm. Au nanoshells were also formed on silica spheres encapsulating 5 nm diameter magnetic iron oxide nanocrystals. The optical absorbance spectra of these Au nanoshells are reported. The plasmon resonance wavelengths of the smaller diameter nanoshells were significantly less tunable than those of the larger diameter nanoshells. This is due to a reduced range of accessible core-shell ratio, the geometric factor that determines the plasmon peak position, as the silica core diameter shrinks. The smaller diameter nanoshells were also found to be highly prone to aggregation, which broadens the plasmon absorption peak. Model calculations of dispersion stability as a function of silica core diameter reveal that smaller diameter Au shells exhibit more aggregation because of the size-dependence of the electrostatic double-layer potential.

Transient extracellular application of gold nanostars increases hippocampal neuronal activity.

Project description:BackgroundWith the increased use of nanoparticles in biomedical applications there is a growing need to understand the effects that nanoparticles may have on cell function. Identifying these effects and understanding the mechanism through which nanoparticles interfere with the normal functioning of a cell is necessary for any therapeutic or diagnostic application. The aim of this study is to evaluate if gold nanoparticles can affect the normal function of neurons, namely their activity and coding properties.ResultsWe synthesized star shaped gold nanoparticles of 180 nm average size. We applied the nanoparticles to acute mouse hippocampal slices while recording the action potentials from single neurons in the CA3 region. Our results show that CA3 hippocampal neurons increase their firing rate by 17% after the application of gold nanostars. The increase in excitability lasted for as much as 50 minutes after a transient 5 min application of the nanoparticles. Further analyses of the action potential shape and computational modeling suggest that nanoparticles block potassium channels responsible for the repolarization of the action potentials, thus allowing the cell to increase its firing rate.ConclusionsOur results show that gold nanoparticles can affect the coding properties of neurons by modifying their excitability.
