Electronic Structure and Chemical Bonding of [AmO₂(H₂O) _n ]^2+/1.

ABSTRACT: Systematic americyl-hydration cations were investigated theoretically to understand the electronic structures and bonding in [(AmO₂)(H₂O) _n ]^2+/1+ (n = 1-6). We obtained the binding energy using density functional theory methods with scalar relativistic and spin-orbit coupling effects. The geometric structures of these species have been investigated in aqueous solution via an implicit solvation model. Computational results reveal that the complexes of five equatorial water molecules coordinated to americyl ions are the most stable due to the enhanced ionic interactions between the AmO₂ ^2+/1+ cation and multiple oxygen atoms as electron donors. As expected, Am-O_water bonds in such series are electrostatic in nature and contain a generally decreasing covalent character when hydration number increases.

Project description:The transition-metal di-oxides, namely VO2 -, NbO2 - and TaO2 - have been studied using photoelectron velocity map imaging (PE-VMI) in combination with theoretical calculations. The adiabatic electron affinities of VO2 -, NbO2 - and TaO2 - are confirmed to be 2.029(8), 1.901(10) and 2.415(8) eV, respectively. By combining Franck-Condon (FC) simulation with theoretical calculations, the vibrational feature related to Nb-O and Ta-O stretching modes for the ground state has been unveiled. The photoelectron angular distribution (PAD) for VO2 -, NbO2 - and TaO2 - is correlated to the photo-detachment of the highest occupied molecular orbitals (HOMOs), which primarily gets involved in s- and d-orbitals of the V, Nb and Ta atoms. A variety of theoretical calculations have been used to analyze the chemical bonding features of VO2 -1/0, NbO2 -1/0 and TaO2 -1/0, which show that the strong M-O (M = V, Nb and Ta) bond is mainly characterized as ionicity.

Chemical Bonding in Homoleptic Carbonyl Cations [M{Fe(CO)5 }2 ]+ (M=Cu, Ag, Au).

Project description:Syntheses of the copper and gold complexes [Cu{Fe(CO)5 }2 ][SbF6 ] and [Au{Fe(CO)5 }2 ][HOB{3,5-(CF3 )2 C6 H3 }3 ] containing the homoleptic carbonyl cations [M{Fe(CO)5 }2 ]+ (M=Cu, Au) are reported. Structural data of the rare, trimetallic Cu2 Fe, Ag2 Fe and Au2 Fe complexes [Cu{Fe(CO)5 }2 ][SbF6 ], [Ag{Fe(CO)5 }2 ][SbF6 ] and [Au{Fe(CO)5 }2 ][HOB{3,5-(CF3 )2 C6 H3 }3 ] are also given. The silver and gold cations [M{Fe(CO)5 }2 ]+ (M=Ag, Au) possess a nearly linear Fe-M-Fe' moiety but the Fe-Cu-Fe' in [Cu{Fe(CO)5 }2 ][SbF6 ] exhibits a significant bending angle of 147° due to the strong interaction with the [SbF6 ]- anion. The Fe(CO)5 ligands adopt a distorted square-pyramidal geometry in the cations [M{Fe(CO)5 }2 ]+ , with the basal CO groups inclined towards M. The geometry optimization with DFT methods of the cations [M{Fe(CO)5 }2 ]+ (M=Cu, Ag, Au) gives equilibrium structures with linear Fe-M-Fe' fragments and D2 symmetry for the copper and silver cations and D4d symmetry for the gold cation. There is nearly free rotation of the Fe(CO)5 ligands around the Fe-M-Fe' axis. The calculated bond dissociation energies for the loss of both Fe(CO)5 ligands from the cations [M{Fe(CO)5 }2 ]+ show the order M=Au (De =137.2 kcal mol-1 )>Cu (De =109.0 kcal mol-1 )>Ag (De =92.4 kcal mol-1 ). The QTAIM analysis shows bond paths and bond critical points for the M-Fe linkage but not between M and the CO ligands. The EDA-NOCV calculations suggest that the [Fe(CO)5 ]→M+ ←[Fe(CO)5 ] donation is significantly stronger than the [Fe(CO)5 ]←M+ →[Fe(CO)5 ] backdonation. Inspection of the pairwise orbital interactions identifies four contributions for the charge donation of the Fe(CO)5 ligands into the vacant (n)s and (n)p AOs of M+ and five components for the backdonation from the occupied (n-1)d AOs of M+ into vacant ligand orbitals.

δ-Bonding modulates the electronic structure of formally divalent nd1 rare earth arene complexes.

Project description:Landmark advances in rare earth (RE) chemistry have shown that divalent complexes can be isolated with non-Aufbau 4f n {5d/6s}1 electron configurations, facilitating remarkable bonding motifs and magnetic properties. We report a series of divalent bis-tethered arene complexes, [RE(NHAriPr6 )2] (2RE; RE = Sc, Y, La, Sm, Eu, Tm, Yb; NHAriPr6 = {N(H)C6H3-2,6-(C6H2-2,4,6-iPr3)2}). Fluid solution EPR spectroscopy gives g iso < 2.002 for 2Sc, 2Y, and 2La, consistent with formal nd1 configurations, calculations reveal metal-arene δ-bonding via mixing of nd(x 2-y 2) valence electrons into arene π* orbitals. Experimental and calculated EPR and UV-Vis-NIR spectroscopic properties for 2Y show that minor structural changes markedly alter the metal d(x 2-y 2) contribution to the SOMO. This contrasts 4f n {5d/6s}1 complexes where the valence d-based electron resides in a non-bonding orbital. Complexes 2Sm, 2Eu, 2Tm, and 2Yb contain highly-localised 4f n+1 ions with no appreciable metal-arene bonding by density functional calculations. These results show that the physicochemical properties of divalent rare earth arene complexes with both formal nd1 and 4f n+1 configurations are nuanced, may be controlled through ligand modification, and require a multi-pronged experimental and theoretical approach to fully rationalise.

Chemical Bonding and σ-Aromaticity in Charged Molecular Alloys: [Pd2As14]4- and [Au2Sb14]4- Clusters.

Project description:We report a computational study on the structures and bonding of a charged molecular alloy D 2h [Pd2As14]4- (1), as well as a model D 2h [Au2Sb14]4- (2) cluster. Our effort makes use of an array of quantum chemistry tools: canonical molecular orbital analysis, adaptive natural density partitioning, natural bond orbital analysis, orbital composition analysis, and nucleus independent chemical shift calculations. Both clusters consist of two X7 (X = As, Sb) cages, which are interconnected via a M2 (M = Pd, Au) dumbbell, featuring two distorted square-planar MX4 units. Excluding the Pd/As or Au/Sb lone-pairs, clusters 1 and 2 are 50- and 44-electron systems, respectively, of which 32 electrons are for two-center two-electron (2c-2e) As-As or Sb-Sb σ bonds and an additional 16 electrons in 1 for 2c-2e Pd-As σ bonds. No covalent Pd-Pd or Au-Au bond is present in the systems. Cluster 1 is shown to possess two globally delocalized σ electrons, whereas 2 has two σ sextets (each associated with an AuSb4 fragment). Thus, 1 and 2 conform to the (4n + 2) Hückel rule, for n = 0 and 1, respectively, rendering them σ-aromaticity.

Chemical Bonding in Transition Metal Nitride Os3N3 + Cluster: 6π Inorganic Benzene and δ2δ*1δ*1 Aromaticity.

Project description:Inorganic benzene-like clusters with a planar hexagonal ring are of interest in chemistry, as are new types of aromaticity, multifold aromaticity, and in particular δ aromaticity beyond carbon-based organic systems. Here we report on a computational study of chemical bonding in a binary Os3N3 + D 3h (7A2″) cluster. This transition metal nitride cluster assumes a perfectly planar, heteroatomic, hexagonal geometry. An array of quantum chemistry tools is exploited to elucidate the electronic, structural, and bonding properties of D 3h Os3N3 + cluster, which include canonical molecular orbitals, adaptive natural density partitioning, natural bond orbital analysis, orbital composition calculations, and nucleus-independent chemical shifts. The computational data collectively support the bonding picture of 2-fold π/δ aromaticity: 6π electrons delocalized over all Os/N centers versus an Os-based 4δ framework in the unique δ2δ*1δ*1 configuration. The π sextet renders this heteroatomic cluster an inorganic analog of benzene. Transition metal-based inorganic benzenes are unknown in the literature, to our knowledge. The triplet 4δ electron-counting is a rare case of d-orbital aromaticity and δ-aromaticity, following the reversed 4n Hückel rule for aromaticity in a triplet system. This bonding picture is concrete, differing fundamentally from a recent study on the relevant system.

Tripodal P3XFe-N2 Complexes (X = B, Al, Ga): Effect of the Apical Atom on Bonding, Electronic Structure, and Catalytic N2-to-NH3 Conversion.

Project description:Terminal dinitrogen complexes of iron ligated by tripodal, tetradentate P3X ligands (X = B, C, Si) have previously been shown to mediate catalytic N2-to-NH3 conversion (N2RR) with external proton and electron sources. From this set of compounds, the tris(phosphino)borane (P3B) system is most active under all conditions canvassed thus far. To further probe the effects of the apical Lewis acidic atom on structure, bonding, and N2RR activity, Fe-N2 complexes supported by analogous group 13 tris(phosphino)alane (P3Al) and tris(phosphino)gallane (P3Ga) ligands are synthesized. The series of P3XFe-N2[0/1-] compounds (X = B, Al, Ga) possess similar electronic structures, degrees of N2 activation, and geometric flexibility as determined from spectroscopic, structural, electrochemical, and computational (DFT) studies. However, treatment of [Na(12-crown-4)2][P3XFe-N2] (X = Al, Ga) with excess acid/reductant in the form of HBArF4/KC8 generates only 2.5 ± 0.1 and 2.7 ± 0.2 equiv of NH3 per Fe, respectively. Similarly, the use of [H2NPh2][OTf]/Cp*2Co leads to the production of 4.1 ± 0.9 (X = Al) and 3.6 ± 0.3 (X = Ga) equiv of NH3. Preliminary reactivity studies confirming P3XFe framework stability under pseudocatalytic conditions suggest that a greater selectivity for hydrogen evolution versus N2RR may be responsible for the attenuated yields of NH3 observed for P3AlFe and P3GaFe relative to P3BFe.

Crystal Structure and Chemical Bonds in [CuII2(Tolf)4(MeOH)2]∙2MeOH.

Project description:A new coordination compound of copper(II) with a tolfenamate ligand of the paddle-wheel-like structure [CuII2(Tolf)4(MeOH)2]∙2MeOH was obtained and structurally characterized. Chemical bonds of Cu(II)∙∙∙Cu(II) and Cu(II)-O were theoretically analyzed and compared with the results for selected similar structures from the CSD database. QTAIM analysis showed that the Cu(II)∙∙∙Cu(II) interaction has a strength comparable to a hydrogen bond, as indicated by the electron density at a critical point. The remaining QTAIM parameters indicate stability of the Cu(II)∙∙∙Cu(II) interaction. Other methods, such as NCI and NBO, also indicate a significant strength of this interaction. Thus, the Cu(II)∙∙∙Cu(II) interaction can be treated as one of the noncovalent interactions that affects the structure of the coordination compound, the packing of molecules in the crystal, and the general properties of the compound.

Stabilities, Electronic Structures, and Bonding Properties of Iron Complexes (E1E2)Fe(CO)2(CNArTripp2)2 (E1E2=BF, CO, N2, CN-, or NO+).

Project description:The coordination of 10-electron diatomic ligands (BF, CO N2) to iron complexes Fe(CO)2(CNArTripp2)2 [ArTripp2=2,6-(2,4,6-(iso-propyl)3C6H2)2C6H3] have been realized in experiments very recently (Science, 2019, 363, 1203-1205). Herein, the stability, electronic structures, and bonding properties of (E1E2)Fe-(CO)2(CNArTripp2)2 (E1E2=BF, CO, N2, CN-, NO+) were studied using density functional (DFT) calculations. The ground state of all those molecules is singlet and the calculated geometries are in excellent agreement with the experimental values. The natural bond orbital analysis revealed that Fe is negatively charged while E1 possesses positive charges. By employing the energy decomposition analysis, the bonding nature of the E2E1-Fe(CO)2(CNArTripp2)2 bond was disclosed to be the classic dative bond E2E1→Fe(CO)2(CNArTripp2)2 rather than the electron-sharing double bond. More interestingly, the bonding strength between BF and Fe(CO)2(CNArTripp2)2 is much stronger than that between CO (or N2) and Fe(CO)2(CNArTripp2)2, which is ascribed to the better σ-donation and π back-donations. However, the orbital interactions in CN-→Fe(CO)2(CNArTripp2)2 and NO+→Fe(CO)2(CNArTripp2)2 mainly come from σ-donation and π back-donation, respectively. The different contributions from σ donation and π donation for different ligands can be well explained by using the energy levels of E1E2 and Fe(CO)2(CNArTripp2)2 fragments.

Time-Resolved Chemical Bonding Structure Evolution by Direct-Dynamics Chemical Simulations.

Project description:Direct-dynamics simulations monitor atomic nuclei trajectories during chemical reactions, where chemical bonds are broken and new ones are formed. While they provide valuable information about the ongoing nuclear dynamics, the evolution of the chemical bonds is customarily overlooked, thus, hindering key information about the reaction mechanism. Here we examine the evolution of the chemical bonds for the three main mechanisms of the F- + CH3CH2Cl reaction using quasi-classical trajectories for the nuclei, and global natural orbitals for the electrons. Key findings include (i) bimolecular nucleophilic substitution (SN2) resembles a one-step bond breaking and formation process; (ii) the elimination mechanisms (syn- and anti-E2) feature a sequential two-step process of proton abstraction and Cl- elimination; and (iii) the anti-E2 mechanism is slower, exhibits rebound effects, and gets activated by specific vibrational modes. This study highlights the importance of correctly describing and thoroughly analyzing the dynamical evolution of chemical bonds for chemical reaction mechanistic studies.
