A cost-effective, scalable, and environmentally benign process is herein reported for the synthesis of pantoprazole sodium sesquihydrate: 5-(difluromethoxy)-2-[{(3,4-dimethoxy-2-pyridinyl)methyl}sulfinyl]-1<i>H</i>-benzimidazole sodium sesquihydrate.
