Lotus (<i>Nelumbo nucifera</i> Gaertn.) contains various bioactive compounds, with benzylisoquinoline alkaloids (BIAs) as one of the major groups. The biosynthetic pathways of two major bioactive BIAs in this plant, nuciferine and <i>N</i>-nornuciferine, are still not clear.
