Condensate Oil-Tolerant Foams Stabilized by an Anionic-Sulfobetaine Surfactant Mixture.

ABSTRACT: Foams are widely used to remove liquid loading at the bottom of gas wells to improve natural gas production. However, it becomes ineffective when a gas well contains a large amount of hydrocarbon condensate because oil will rupture the foams. In this work, condensate oil-tolerant foams were developed and stabilized by a mixture of cocamidopropyl hydroxyl sulfobetaine (CHSB) and sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS). The foam properties are examined at different temperatures under atmospheric conditions and high pressures with various contents of condensate oil. It is found that the foam stability is improved when the oil content is increased; in addition, high temperature, high salinity, and high pressure are beneficial for foam stabilizing. To reveal the mechanism of stable foam in the presence of high content of oil, a confocal microscope was employed to visualize oil-foam interactions. It was observed that the high stability of the SDS-CHSB foams is ascribed to the formation of stable pseudoemulsion between oil droplets and the gas-liquid interface. Such condensate oil-tolerant foams show promising potential to be used in the foam-assisted lift process during natural gas production.

Project description:The hydrophobic ionic liquid [C8mim][PF6] (1-octyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate)-based bicontinuous microemulsion stabilized by the anionic surfactant [C4mim][AOT] (1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(2-ethylhexyl) sulfosuccinate) was first tried as a medium for horseradish peroxidase (HRP)-triggered oxidative polymerization of aniline. The effects of the mass ratio of [C8mim][PF6]-to-water (α), the mass fraction of [C4mim][AOT] in the total mixture (γ), and temperature (T) on the enzymatic polymerization were investigated using UV-vis-NIR absorption, electron spin resonance, and small-angle X-ray scattering spectroscopy techniques. The bicontinuous microemulsion is demonstrated to play a template role in the biosynthesis of polyaniline (PANI). The conductivity of the resulting PANI depends on the microemulsion microstructure and the microstructure- and T-dependent catalytic properties of the solubilized HRP. With the increase in α, the conductivity of the synthesized PANI decreases due to the increase in the template curvature (decrease of the microdomain size) and the decrease in the activity and stability of HRP. Compared with α, γ has little effect on the microdomain size of the template; so, the γ-dependent change in the conductivity of PANI is mainly caused by the changes of the microstructure-dependent activity and stability of HRP. Over the range of 20-35 °C, T has little effect on the microdomain size, but it greatly changes the activity and stability of HRP. With the increase in T, the activity of HRP increases steadily, but its stability decreases significantly, which should be one of the reasons why the conductivity of PANI decreases with increasing T. In conclusion, lower values of α, γ, and T are favorable for the biosynthesis of conductive PANI. The present study not only deepens the insight into the role of the template in the process of PANI synthesis, but also opens up a green new way for the biosynthesis of the conducting polymer.

Project description:Rhinoviruses (RVs) are major instigators of acute exacerbations of asthma, COPD and other respiratory diseases. RVs are categorized into three species (RV-A, RV-B, and RV-C), which comprise more than 160 serotypes, making it difficult to develop an effective vaccine. Currently no effective treatment for RV infection is available. Pulmonary surfactant is an extracellular complex of lipids and proteins that plays a central role in regulating innate immunity in the lung. The minor pulmonary surfactant lipids, palmitoyl-oleoyl-phosphatidylglycerol (POPG) and phosphatidylinositol (PI), are potent regulators of inflammatory processes, and exert antiviral activity against respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) and influenza A viruses (IAV). In the current study, we examined the potencies of POPG and PI against rhinovirus A16 (RV-A16) in primary human airway epithelial cells (AECs) differentiated at an air-liquid interface (ALI). After AECs were infected with RV-A16, PI reduced viral RNA copy number by 80% and downregulated (55-65%) expression of antiviral genes (MDA5, IRF7 and IFN-lambda). In contrast, POPG only slightly decreased MDA5 (24%) and IRF7 (11%) gene expression but did not inhibit IFN-lambda gene expression or RV-A16 replication in AECs. However, both POPG and PI inhibited (50-80%) IL6 and CXCL11 gene expression and protein secretion. PI treatment dramatically attenuated global gene expression changes induced by RV-A16 infection in AECs. Cell type enrichment analysis of viral regulated genes opposed by PI treatment revealed that PI inhibited viral induction of goblet cell metaplasia and virus-induced downregulation of ciliated, club, and ionocyte cell types. Notably, PI treament altered the ability of RV-A16 to regulate expression of some phosphatidylinositol 4-kinase (PI4K), acyl-CoA binding domain containing (ACBD) and low density lipoprotein receptor (LDLR) genes that play critical roles in the formation and functioning of replication organelles (ROs) required for RV replication in host cells. These data suggest PI can be used as a potent, non-toxic antiviral agent for RV infection prophylaxis and treatment.
