Vertical redistribution of salt and layered changes in global ocean salinity.

ABSTRACT: Salinity is an essential proxy for estimating the global net freshwater input into the ocean. Due to the limited spatial and temporal coverage of the existing salinity measurements, previous studies of global salinity changes focused mostly on the surface and upper oceans. Here, we examine global ocean salinity changes and ocean vertical salt fluxes over the full depth in a dynamically consistent and data-constrained ocean state estimate. The changes of the horizontally averaged salinity display a vertically layered structure, consistent with the profiles of the ocean vertical salt fluxes. For salinity changes in the relatively well-observed upper ocean, the contribution of vertical exchange of salt can be on the same order of the net surface freshwater input. The vertical redistribution of salt thus should be considered in inferring changes in global ocean salinity and the hydrological cycle from the surface and upper ocean measurements.

Vertical ocean heat redistribution sustaining sea-ice concentration trends in the Ross Sea.

Project description:Several processes have been hypothesized to explain the slight overall expansion of Antarctic sea ice over the satellite observation era, including externally forced changes in local winds or in the Southern Ocean's hydrological cycle, as well as internal climate variability. Here, we show the critical influence of an ocean-sea-ice feedback. Once initiated by an external perturbation, it may be sufficient to sustain the observed sea-ice expansion in the Ross Sea, the region with the largest and most significant expansion. We quantify the heat trapped at the base of the ocean mixed layer and demonstrate that it is of the same order of magnitude as the latent heat storage due to the long-term changes in sea-ice volume. The evidence thus suggests that the recent ice coverage increase in the Ross Sea could have been achieved through a reorganization of energy within the near-surface ice-ocean system.The mechanisms responsible for the overall expansion of Antarctic sea-ice in recent decades remain unclear. Here, using observations and model results, the authors show that ice-ocean feedbacks, triggered by an external perturbation, could be responsible for changes in sea-ice extent observed in the Ross Sea.

Climate-driven global redistribution of an ocean giant predicts increased threat from shipping.

Project description:Climate change is shifting animal distributions. However, the extent to which future global habitats of threatened marine megafauna will overlap existing human threats remains unresolved. Here we use global climate models and habitat suitability estimated from long-term satellite-tracking data of the world's largest fish, the whale shark, to show that redistributions of present-day habitats are projected to increase the species' co-occurrence with global shipping. Our model projects core habitat area losses of >50% within some national waters by 2100, with geographic shifts of over 1,000 km (∼12 km yr-1). Greater habitat suitability is predicted in current range-edge areas, increasing the co-occurrence of sharks with large ships. This future increase was ∼15,000 times greater under high emissions compared with a sustainable development scenario. Results demonstrate that climate-induced global species redistributions that increase exposure to direct sources of mortality are possible, emphasizing the need for quantitative climate-threat predictions in conservation assessments of endangered marine megafauna.

Ocean acidification changes the vertical movement of stone crab larvae.

Project description:Anthropogenic activities are increasing ocean temperature and decreasing ocean pH. Some coastal habitats are experiencing increases in organic runoff, which when coupled with a loss of vegetated coastline can accelerate reductions in seawater pH. Marine larvae that hatch in coastal habitats may not have the ability to respond to elevated temperature and changes in seawater pH. This study examined the response of Florida stone crab (Menippe mercenaria) larvae to elevated temperature (30°C control and 32°C treatment) and CO2-induced reductions in pH (8.05 pH control and 7.80 pH treatment). We determined whether those singular and simultaneous stressors affect larval vertical movement at two developmental stages. Geotactic responses varied between larval stages. The direction and rate of the vertical displacement of larvae were dependent on pH rather than temperature. Stage III larvae swam upwards under ambient pH conditions, but swam downwards at a faster rate under reduced pH. There was no observable change in the directional movement of Stage V larvae. The reversal in orientation by Stage III larvae may limit larval transport in habitats that experience reduced pH and could pose challenges for the northward dispersal of stone crabs as coastal temperatures warm.

East-west contrasting changes in Southern Indian Ocean Antarctic Bottom Water salinity over three decades.

Project description:Antarctic Bottom Water (AABW) characteristics, derived from multiple water sources with various properties, are significantly affected by and contribute to climate change. However, the underlying causes of changes in AABW characteristics are not well-understood. In this study, we aimed to analyse the east-west contrasting pattern of AABW characteristics in the Southern Indian Ocean (SIO) over the last three decades. We show that AABW has become warmer and more saline in the western SIO (WSIO) but warmer and fresher in the eastern SIO (ESIO) in 2010s than in 1990s. The warming and salinification of WSIO AABW are primarily explained by changes in source water mixing ratios, although the source water properties also significantly contribute to the observed changes. In contrast, the warming and freshening of ESIO AABW cannot be explained without considering changes in the source water properties as the direction of AABW salinity change due to source water mixing ratios is opposite (salinification) to that of observations (freshening). The east-west contrasting pattern of AABW salinity changes and more rapid warming in the ESIO have important consequences for poleward AABW transport and sea-level rise within and beyond the SIO.

Vertical two-dimensional layered fused aromatic ladder structure.

Project description:Planar two-dimensional (2D) layered materials such as graphene, metal-organic frameworks, and covalent-organic frameworks are attracting enormous interest in the scientific community because of their unique properties and potential applications. One common feature of these materials is that their building blocks (monomers) are flat and lie in planar 2D structures, with interlayer π-π stacking, parallel to the stacking direction. Due to layer-to-layer confinement, their segmental motion is very restricted, which affects their sorption/desorption kinetics when used as sorbent materials. Here, to minimize this confinement, a vertical 2D layered material was designed and synthesized, with a robust fused aromatic ladder (FAL) structure. Because of its unique structural nature, the vertical 2D layered FAL structure has excellent gas uptake performance under both low and high pressures, and also a high iodine (I2) uptake capacity with unusually fast kinetics, the fastest among reported porous organic materials to date.

Vertical redistribution of principle water masses on the Northeast Greenland Shelf.

Project description:The Northeast Greenland shelf (NEGS) is a recipient of Polar Water (PW) from the Arctic Ocean, Greenland Ice Sheet melt, and Atlantic Water (AW). Here, we compile hydrographical measurements to quantify long-term changes in fjords and coastal waters. We find a profound change in the vertical distribution of water masses, with AW shoaling >60 m and PW thinning >50 m since early 2000's. The properties of these waters have also changed. AW is now 1 °C warmer and the salinity of surface waters and PW are 1.8 and 0.68 lower, respectively. The AW changes have substantially weakened stratification south of ~74°N, indicating increased accessibility of heat and potentially nutrients associated with AW. The Atlantification earlier reported for the eastern Fram Strait and Barents Sea region has also propagated to the NEGS. The increased presence of AW, is an important driver for regional change leading to a likely shift in ecosystem structure and function.

Gene Expression Changes and Community Turnover Differentially Shape the Global Ocean Metatranscriptome.

Project description:Ocean microbial communities strongly influence the biogeochemistry, food webs, and climate of our planet. Despite recent advances in understanding their taxonomic and genomic compositions, little is known about how their transcriptomes vary globally. Here, we present a dataset of 187 metatranscriptomes and 370 metagenomes from 126 globally distributed sampling stations and establish a resource of 47 million genes to study community-level transcriptomes across depth layers from pole-to-pole. We examine gene expression changes and community turnover as the underlying mechanisms shaping community transcriptomes along these axes of environmental variation and show how their individual contributions differ for multiple biogeochemically relevant processes. Furthermore, we find the relative contribution of gene expression changes to be significantly lower in polar than in non-polar waters and hypothesize that in polar regions, alterations in community activity in response to ocean warming will be driven more strongly by changes in organismal composition than by gene regulatory mechanisms. Global ocean redox changes before and during the Toarcian Oceanic Anoxic Event.

Project description:Mesozoic oceanic anoxic events are recognized as widespread deposits of marine organic-rich mudrocks temporally associated with mass extinctions and large igneous province emplacement. The Toarcian Oceanic Anoxic Event is one example during which expanded ocean anoxia is hypothesized in response to environmental perturbations associated with emplacement of the Karoo-Ferrar igneous province. However, the global extent of total seafloor anoxia and the relative extent of euxinic (anoxic and sulfide-rich) and non-euxinic anoxic conditions during the Toarcian Oceanic Anoxic Event are poorly constrained. Here we present estimates of the global total anoxic and euxinic seafloor areas before and during the Toarcian Oceanic Anoxic Event based on rhenium and molybdenum enrichments, respectively, in organic-rich mudrocks of the Fernie Formation (British Columbia, Canada). We find that mass balance models depict an expansion of up to ~7% total seafloor anoxia, which was dominated by euxinia, at the onset of the Toarcian Oceanic Anoxic Event, followed by a contraction before the end of the event. The global ocean redox trends revealed by the rhenium data mirrors the collapse and recovery patterns of global ammonite and foraminiferal biodiversity.

Sinking particles promote vertical connectivity in the ocean microbiome.

Project description:The sinking of organic particles formed in the photic layer is a main vector of carbon export into the deep ocean. Although sinking particles are heavily colonized by microbes, so far it has not been explored whether this process plays a role in transferring prokaryotic diversity from surface to deep oceanic layers. Using Illumina sequencing of the 16S rRNA gene, we explore here the vertical connectivity of the ocean microbiome by characterizing marine prokaryotic communities associated with five different size fractions and examining their compositional variability from surface down to 4,000 m across eight stations sampled in the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian Oceans during the Malaspina 2010 Expedition. Our results show that the most abundant prokaryotes in the deep ocean are also present in surface waters. This vertical community connectivity seems to occur predominantly through the largest particles because communities in the largest size fractions showed the highest taxonomic similarity throughout the water column, whereas free-living communities were more isolated vertically. Our results further suggest that particle colonization processes occurring in surface waters determine to some extent the composition and biogeography of bathypelagic communities. Overall, we postulate that sinking particles function as vectors that inoculate viable particle-attached surface microbes into the deep-sea realm, determining to a considerable extent the structure, functioning, and biogeography of deep ocean communities.
