A new variety of Didymocarpus (Gesneriaceae) from Guangdong, China.

ABSTRACT: A new variety of Didymocarpus, D.heucherifoliusvar.gamosepalus from Guangdong, China, is described and illustrated with photographs. It closely resembles the more widespread D.heucherifolius within a number of morphological characters. However, it can be easily distinguished from the latter according to the new taxon: calyx base connate, 5-lobed from middle to above middle, larger flowers (up to 5 cm long) and glabrous corolla.

Actinostephanus (Gesneriaceae), a new genus and species from Guangdong, South China.

Project description:Actinostephanus, a new genus from southern China, is described and colorfully illustrated with a single species, A.enpingensis. This new genus is morphologically most similar to Boeica and Leptoboea, nevertheless, it can be easily distinguished from the latter two by the following characteristics, such as leaves in whorls of three, all closely clustered at the top; corolla bowl-shaped, 5-lobed, actinomorphic; capsule hard, oblong-ovoid, short, 3-4 mm long, densely appressed villous, wrapped by persistent densely pubescent calyx lobes, style persistent. The new genus and related genera were sequenced using the next-generation sequencing technique. The whole plastid genome of the new genus is 154, 315 - 154, 344 bp in length. We reconstructed phylogenetic trees using the dataset of 80 encoded protein genes of the whole plastid genome from 47 accessions based on ML and BI analyses. The result revealed that the new genus was recovering in a polytomy including Boeica, Rhynchotechum, and Leptoboea with strong support, congruent to the morphological evidence. A global conservation assessment was also performed and classifies A.enpingensis as Least Concern (LC). In addition, after a review of recently described species of Gesneriaceae, we propose that plant enthusiasts, especially Gesneriad fans, have been playing an increasingly important role in the process of new taxa-discoveries.

Primulina anisocymosa (Gesneriaceae), a new species with a unique inflorescence structure from Guangdong, China.

Project description:A new Primulina species from Guangdong, China with an unusual inflorescence is described here. Primulina anisocymosa is vegetatively most similar to P. bobaiensis. It can be distinguished from all species within Primulina morphologically by its unique zigzag monochasial cyme and infructescence. To confirm the phylogenetic relationships and generic placement of this species, not only morphological anatomical features but also chromosome and DNA sequence data were examined and analysed here. Two samples from different populations identified as Primulina anisocymosa are monophyletic and were nested in a monophyletic clade within Primulina with high branch support. The somatic chromosome number of the new species is also reported (2n = 36), supporting its placement in the genus.

Project description:A new species of Gesneriaceae, Didymocarpus phuquocensis, is described and illustrated from Phu Quoc National Park, Kien Giang Province, South-western Vietnam. It is most similar to D. pulcher, D. hookeri and D. punduanus in having 3-verticillate petiolate leaves, morphologically similar calyx, corolla, stamens, pistil and fruit, but differs from all in the glandular-pubescent stems, petioles and leaf blades, 1(-2)-flowered cymes, longer corolla and fruit and longer and densely glandular-puberulent ovary. Data on distribution, ecology, phenology and provisional conservation assessment of the new species are given along with an illustration and a colour plate.

Project description:Primulina hochiensis var. ochroleuca, a new variety from a limestone hill of karst areas, Guangxi, China is described with color photographs. It resembles P. hochiensis var. hochiensis, P. hochiensis var. ovata and P. hochiensis var. rosulata, but can be easily distinguished by a combination of characteristics, especially by its corolla color. We found only one population with approx. 3000 mature individuals at the type locality. This variety is provisionally assessed as vulnerable [VU C1] using IUCN criteria.

A new combination and a new synonym of Gesneriaceae in China.

Project description:Didymocarpussubpalmatinervis W.T.Wang was shown to be conspecific with Petrocodonlithophilus Y.M.Shui, W.H.Chen & Mich.Möller, by checking original literature, examining specimens, tracing specimen collecting history, and conducting field surveys. The results show morphological characteristics and geographical distribution overlaps between these two species. The transfer of Didymocarpussubpalmatinervis to Petrocodon as a new combination with Petrocodonsubpalmatinervis (W.T.Wang) F.Wen & Z.L.Li is proposed here, and P.lithophilus is synonymized with P.subpalmatinervis. Color photographs and essential information are also provided, including a detailed comparison of description, distribution, habitat, and the proposed IUCN conservation status.

Rediscovery of four narrow endemic Didymocarpus species (Gesneriaceae) from Mizoram, India, with revised species descriptions and lectotypifications.

Project description:Here we report the rediscovery of four endemic gesneriads from the state of Mizoram, India, after a span of 86 to 90 years since their last collection. The four species belong to the genus Didymocarpus Wall. and they are: D. adenocarpus, D. lineicapsa, D. parryorum, and D. wengeri. We present revised morphological descriptions, photographs, and designate lectotypes for D. parryorum and D. wengeri. During our study we came across several discrepancies between morphological characters assigned to these four species in the protologue and morphological characters present (or absent) in the type specimens and in plants recollected by us. We list these discrepancies in a section titled 'amendments to protologue'. Based on the high endemicity and critical conservation status of all the four rediscovered species, we suggest that floristic studies along with large-scale biogeographic studies should be prioritized in the Indo-Burmese region.
