Experimental data for an air-conditioning system identification.

ABSTRACT: In this article, data from a 3.5kW mini split air conditioning is presented. A screening 2³ design experiment was performed to evaluate the effects of indoor air temperature, absolute humidity and evaporator fan speed in the performance of the air conditioning. This dataset also includes noise factors as outdoor air temperature, fans energy consumption and response as indoor air exit conditions.

Design of quaternary ammonium type-ionic liquids as desiccants for an air-conditioning system

Project description:The liquid desiccant air-conditioning system allows reducing energy consumption compared to the conventional compressor-type air conditioners. In order to develop desiccant materials for air conditioners, we have investigated the dehumidification capability of quaternary ammonium Ionic Liquids (ILs) and the equilibrium water vapor pressure of aqueous solutions of these ammonium salts. Among the seven tested types of ILs, 2-hydroxy-N,N,N-trimethylethan-1-aminium dimethylphosphate ([Ch][DMPO4]) displayed the best dehumidification capability and the lowest equilibrium water vapor pressure. Furthermore, the 80% aqueous solution of [Ch][DMPO4] exhibited a less corrosive effect on four types of metals, i.e., steel (hot dip zinc-aluminum alloy plated steel), copper (C1100P), aluminum (A5052), and stainless steel (SUS: SUS304). It should be noted that this [Ch][DMPO4] is not only non-toxic but also exhibits a stable nature; the aqueous solution produced no odor after storing for over 1 year under ambient conditions. Graphical abstract We found that 2-hydroxy-N,N,N-trimethylethan-1-aminium dimethylphosphate ([Ch][DMPO4]) exhibited excellent dehumidification capability with a high dehumidification rate. We strongly expect that the liquid desiccant-type air conditioner using the [Ch][DMPO4] aqueous solution might contribute to avoiding an outbreak of a new type of corona virus infection in the near future.Image 1

Performance study of oil-injection hermetic CO2 scroll compressor for automotive air conditioning system.

Project description:An oil-injection CO2 scroll compressor prototype and relative simulation model are developed for automotive Air Conditioning. The effects of oil to refrigerant mass ratio on the compressor performance are studied theoretically and experimentally. The results show that oil-injection is an effective way to improve the volumetric and indicated efficiencies, and reduce discharge temperature. The optimal oil-injection quantity varies at different conditions, and it decreases from 7.9% to 6.3% at fixed discharge pressure 10MPa when the suction pressure increases from 4.5MPa to 5MPa. Similar linear relationships are found and the different slopes of the line are exhibited at fixed suction and discharge pressure separately. Numerical results show that oil-injection has little influence on pressure in working chamber during suction and discharge process, but it can slow up the rising of pressure in compression process and reduce the salient of pressure at the end of compression process.

Characterization of Francisella species isolated from the cooling water of an air conditioning system.

Project description:Strains of Francisella spp. were isolated from cooling water from an air conditioning system in Guangzhou, China. These strains are Gram negative, coccobacilli, non-motile, oxidase negative, catalase negative, esterase and lipid esterase positive. In addition, these bacteria grow on cysteine-supplemented media at 20 °C to 40 °C with an optimal growth temperature of 30 °C. Analysis of 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that these strains belong to the genus Francisella. Biochemical tests and phylogenetic and BLAST analyses of 16S rRNA, rpoB and sdhA genes indicated that one strain was very similar to Francisella philomiragia and that the other strains were identical or highly similar to the Francisella guangzhouensis sp. nov. strain 08HL01032 we previously described. Biochemical and molecular characteristics of these strains demonstrated that multiple Francisella species exist in air conditioning systems.

Identification of SARS-CoV-2 RNA in healthcare heating, ventilation, and air conditioning units.

Project description:Evidence continues to grow supporting the aerosol transmission of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). To assess the potential role of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems in airborne viral transmission, this study sought to determine the viral presence, if any, on air handling units in a healthcare setting where coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) patients were being treated. The presence of SARS-CoV-2 RNA was detected in approximately 25% of samples taken from ten different locations in multiple air handlers. While samples were not evaluated for viral infectivity, the presence of viral RNA in air handlers raises the possibility that viral particles can enter and travel within the air handling system of a hospital, from room return air through high-efficiency MERV-15 filters and into supply air ducts. Although no known transmission events were determined to be associated with these specimens, the findings suggest the potential for HVAC systems to facilitate transfer of virions to locations remote from areas where infected persons reside. These results are important within and outside of healthcare settings and may present necessary guidance for building operators of facilities that are not equipped with high-efficiency filtration. Furthermore, the identification of SARS-CoV-2 in HVAC components indicates the potential utility as an indoor environmental surveillance location.

Social media data shed light on air-conditioning interest of heat-vulnerable regions and sociodemographic groups.

Project description:Cooling homes with air conditioners is a vital adaptation approach, but the wider adoption of air conditioners can increase hydrofluorocarbon emissions that have high global warming potential and carbon emissions as a result of more fossil energy consumption. The scale and scope of future cooling demand worldwide are, however, uncertain because the extent and drivers of air-conditioning adoption remain unclear. Here, using 2021 and 2022 Facebook and Instagram data from 113 countries, we investigate the usability of social media advertising data to address these data gaps in relation to the drivers of air-conditioning adoption. We find that social media data might represent air-conditioning purchasing trends. Globally, parents of small children and middle-aged, highly educated married or cohabiting males tend to express greater interest in air-conditioning adoption. In regions with high heat vulnerability yet little empirical data on cooling demand (e.g., the Middle East and North Africa), these sociodemographic factors play a more prominent role. These findings can strengthen our understanding of future cooling demand for more sustainable cooling management.

Project description:This data article presents the raw data used in the article "Experimental and analytical evaluation of exhaust air heat pumps in ventilation-based heating systems" [1]. The data set contains measurement results of a field monitoring on a residential exhaust air heat pump system (air-to-air heat pump) in Germany. This data could be used to investigate the dynamic behavior and performance of the exhaust air heat pump systems. The data set contains air temperature and humidity of all four sides of the heat pump unit. Moreover, the electrical consumption of the unit and the dynamic pressure difference on the exhaust side (as indication of the air volume rate) could be also found in the data set.

A Zero-Energy, Zero-Emission Air Conditioning Fabric.

Project description:High indoor humidity/temperature pose serious public health threat and hinder industrial productivity, thus adversely impairing the wellness and economy of the entire society. Traditional air conditioning systems for dehumidification and cooling involve significant energy consumption and have accelerated the greenhouse effect. Here, this work demonstrates an asymmetric bilayer cellulose-based fabric that enables solar-driven continuous indoor dehumidification, transpiration-driven power generation, and passive radiative cooling using the same textile without any energy input. The multimode fabric (ABMTF) consists of a cellulose moisture absorption-evaporation layer (ADF) and a cellulose acetate (CA) radiation layer. The ABMTF exhibits a high moisture absorption capacity and water evaporation rate, which quickly reduces the indoor relative humidity (RH) to a comfortable level (40-60% RH) under 1 sun illumination. The evaporation-driven continuous capillary flow generates a maximum open-circuit voltage (Voc ) of 0.82 V, and a power density (P) up to 1.13 µW cm-3 . When a CA layer with high solar reflection and mid-infrared (mid-IR) emissivity faces outward, it realizes subambient cooling of ≈12 °C with average cooling power of ≈106 W m-2 at midday under radiation of 900 W m-2 . This work brings a new perspective to develop the next-generation, high performance environmentally friendly materials for sustainable moisture/thermal management and self-powered applications.
