Bi(I)-Catalyzed Transfer-Hydrogenation with Ammonia-Borane.

ABSTRACT: A catalytic transfer-hydrogenation utilizing a well-defined Bi(I) complex as catalyst and ammonia-borane as transfer agent has been developed. This transformation represents a unique example of low-valent pnictogen catalysis cycling between oxidation states I and III, and proved useful for the hydrogenation of azoarenes and the partial reduction of nitroarenes. Interestingly, the bismuthinidene catalyst performs well in the presence of low-valent transition-metal sensitive functional groups and presents orthogonal reactivity compared to analogous phosphorus-based catalysis. Mechanistic investigations suggest the intermediacy of an elusive bismuthine species, which is proposed to be responsible for the hydrogenation and the formation of hydrogen.

Computational Prediction of Ammonia-Borane Dehydrocoupling and Transfer Hydrogenation of Ketones and Imines Catalyzed by SCS Nickel Pincer Complexes.

Project description:Inspired by the catalytic mechanism and active site structure of lactate racemase, three scorpion-like SCS nickel pincer complexes were proposed as potential catalysts for transfer hydrogenation of ketones and imines with ammonia-borane (AB) as the hydrogen source. Density functional theory calculations reveal a stepwise hydride and proton transfer mechanism for the dehydrocoupling of AB and hydrogenation of N-methylacetonimine, and a concerted proton-coupled hydride transfer process for hydrogenation of acetone, acetophenone, and 3-methyl-2-butanone. Among all proposed Ni complexes, the one with symmetric NH2 group on both arms of the SCS pincer ligand has the lowest free energy barrier of 15.0 kcal/mol for dehydrogenation of AB, as well as total free energy barriers of 17.8, 18.2, 18.0, and 18.6 kcal/mol for hydrogenation of acetone, N-methylacetonimine, acetophenone, and 3-methyl-2-butanone, respectively.

Molybdenum catalyzed ammonia borane dehydrogenation: oxidation state specific mechanisms.

Project description:Though numerous catalysts for the dehydrogenation of ammonia borane (AB) are known, those that release >2 equiv of H2 are uncommon. Herein, we report the synthesis of Mo complexes supported by a para-terphenyl diphosphine ligand, 1, displaying metal-arene interactions. Both a Mo(0) N2 complex, 5, and a Mo(II) bis(acetonitrile) complex, 4, exhibit high levels of AB dehydrogenation, releasing over 2.0 equiv of H2. The reaction rate, extent of dehydrogenation, and reaction mechanism vary as a function of the precatalyst oxidation state. Several Mo hydrides (Mo(II)(H)2, [Mo(II)(H)](+), and [Mo(IV)(H)3](+)) relevant to AB chemistry were characterized.

Facile preparation of Cu-Fe oxide nanoplates for ammonia borane decomposition and tandem nitroarene hydrogenation.

Project description:A facile substrate involved strategy was used to prepare Cu-Fe LDO (layered double oxide) nanoplates. The material exhibited good-efficiency for decomposition of ammonia borane (AB) in alkaline methanol solution. Significantly, the material also demonstrated excellent catalytic performance in the reduction of various nitroarenes by coupling with AB hydrolysis in a one pot tandem reaction, and gave excellent yields of the corresponding amine products.

Remarkably Facile Borane-Promoted, Rhodium-Catalyzed Asymmetric Hydrogenation of Tri- and Tetrasubstituted Alkenes.

Project description:Oxime-directed catalytic asymmetric hydroboration is diverted to catalytic asymmetric hydrogenation (CAH) upon the addition of a proton source, such as MeOH, or by running the reaction under a hydrogen atmosphere. A borane (e.g., pinacolborane) is required to promote CAH. Tri- and tetrasubstituted alkenes, including the challenging all-alkyl tetrasubstituted alkenes, undergo CAH with enantiomer ratios (er) as high as 99:1. The mild reaction conditions, i.e., ambient temperature, moderate reaction times, and the need for only a slight excess of H2, contrast those used in most state-of-the-art catalysts for related substrates.

Ammonia borane dehydrogenation and selective hydrogenation of functionalized nitroarene over a porous nickel-cobalt bimetallic catalyst.

Project description:The hydrolysis of ammonia borane is a promising strategy for hydrogen energy exploration and exploitation. The in situ produced hydrogen could be directly utilized in hydrogenation reactions. In this work, a bimetallic nickel-cobalt material with porous structure was developed through the pyrolysis of ZIF-67 incorporated with Ni ions. Through the introduction of Ni(NO3)2 as an etching agent, the ZIF-67 polyhedrons were transformed into hollow nanospheres, and further evolved into irregular nanosheets. The bimetallic NiCo phase was formed after pyrolysis in a nitrogen atmosphere at high temperature, with the decomposition and release of organic ligands as gaseous molecules under flowing nitrogen. The obtained bimetallic NiCo porous materials show superior catalytic performance towards hydrolytic dehydrogenation of ammonia borane, thereby nitrobenzene with reducible functional groups can be reduced with high selectivity to the corresponding aniline.

FLP-Catalyzed Transfer Hydrogenation of Silyl Enol Ethers.

Project description:Herein we report the first catalytic transfer hydrogenation of silyl enol ethers. This metal free approach employs tris(pentafluorophenyl)borane and 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine (TMP) as a commercially available FLP catalyst system and naturally occurring γ-terpinene as a dihydrogen surrogate. A variety of silyl enol ethers undergo efficient hydrogenation, with the reduced products isolated in excellent yields (29 examples, 82 % average yield).

Ammonia-Borane Dehydrogenation Catalyzed by Dual-Mode Proton-Responsive Ir-CNN<sup>H</sup> Complexes.

Project description:Metal complexes incorporating proton-responsive ligands have been proved to be superior catalysts in reactions involving the H2 molecule. In this contribution, a series of IrIII complexes based on lutidine-derived CNNH pincers containing N-heterocyclic carbene and secondary amino NHR [R = Ph (4a), tBu (4b), benzyl (4c)] donors as flanking groups have been synthesized and tested in the dehydrogenation of ammonia-borane (NH3BH3, AB) in the presence of substoichiometric amounts (2.5 equiv) of tBuOK. These preactivated derivatives are efficient catalysts in AB dehydrogenation in THF at room temperature, albeit significantly different reaction rates were observed. Thus, by using 0.4 mol % of 4a, 1.0 equiv of H2 per mole of AB was released in 8.5 min (turnover frequency (TOF50%) = 1875 h-1), while complexes 4b and 4c (0.8 mol %) exhibited lower catalytic activities (TOF50% = 55-60 h-1). 4a is currently the best performing IrIII homogeneous catalyst for AB dehydrogenation. Kinetic rate measurements show a zero-order dependence with respect to AB, and first order with the catalyst in the dehydrogenation with 4a (-d[AB]/dt = k[4a]). Conversely, the reaction with 4b is second order in AB and first order in the catalyst (-d[AB]/dt = k[4b][AB]2). Moreover, the reactions of the derivatives 4a and 4b with an excess of tBuOK (2.5 equiv) have been analyzed through NMR spectroscopy. For the former precursor, formation of the iridate 5 was observed as a result of a double deprotonation at the amine and the NHC pincer arm. In marked contrast, in the case of 4b, a monodeprotonated (at the pincer NHC-arm) species 6 is observed upon reaction with tBuOK. Complex 6 is capable of activating H2 reversibly to yield the trihydride derivative 7. Finally, DFT calculations of the first AB dehydrogenation step catalyzed by 5 has been performed at the DFT//MN15 level of theory in order to get information on the predominant metal-ligand cooperation mode.

Iron-Catalyzed Transfer Hydrogenation of Allylic Alcohols with Isopropanol.

Project description:Herein, we report an iron-catalyzed transfer hydrogenation of allylic alcohols. The operationally simple protocol employs a well-defined bench stable (cyclopentadienone)iron(0) carbonyl complex as a precatalyst in combination with K2CO3 (4 mol %) and isopropanol as the hydrogen donor. A diverse range of allylic alcohols undergo transfer hydrogenation to form the corresponding alcohols in good yields (33 examples, ≤83% isolated yield). The scope and limitations of the method have been investigated, and experiments that shed light on the reaction mechanism have been conducted.
