Project description:To determine the relationship between dietary intake of niacin and glaucoma using the data from the 2005 to 2008 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). Subjects aged 40 years and older who participated in the dietary intake interview and vision health questionnaire of NHANES were included in the study. Glaucoma diagnosis by self-report was utilized. Additionally, glaucoma diagnosis by fundus imaging and International Society Geographical and Epidemiological Ophthalmology (ISGEO) criteria was used in subjects with available qualified retinal imaging. Survey logistic regression analyses were used to examine the association between daily niacin consumption and glaucoma. A total of 5768 participants were included in the study. There was a significant decrease in the crude odds of self-reported glaucoma in the third (OR 0.57, 95% Cl 0.43-0.76; p < 0.001) and fourth (OR 0.57, 95% Cl 0.37-0.90; p = 0.018) quartiles of daily niacin consumption, which equated to 21.01 to 28.22 mg/day and greater than 28.22 mg/day, respectively. A similar trend was found using fundus imaging of subjects with niacin intake in the third (OR 0.42, 95% Cl 0.25-0.72; p = 0.002) and fourth (OR 0.36, 95% Cl 0.20-0.67; p = 0.002) quartiles. After adjusting for covariates, the odds of glaucoma based on fundus imaging remained significantly lower for niacin intake in the third (OR 0.49, 95% Cl 0.28-0.87; p = 0.016) and fourth (OR 0.48, 95% Cl 0.26-0.89; p = 0.022) quartile levels. Using ISGEO criteria, there was no significant association between glaucoma and daily niacin consumption. Greater niacin intake may be associated with a lower chance of developing glaucoma.

Project description:BackgroundAmbient humidity has a significant impact on respiratory health and influences disease and symptoms. However, large-scale studies are required to clarify its specific effects on lung function and respiratory symptoms. We examined the relationship between relative humidity (RH), lung function, and respiratory symptoms using data from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES).MethodsIn this cross-sectional study, we analyzed data from KNHANES participants aged ≥ 40 years, collected between 2016 and 2018. Pulmonary function tests (PFTs) and health questionnaires were used to assess lung function and respiratory symptoms. Individual environmental data, including RH, were obtained from the Community Multiscale Air Quality model and linked to the participants' addresses. Short-term (0-14 days), mid-term (30-180 days), and long-term (1-5 years) RH exposures were examined. Linear regression models were used to evaluate the associations between RH and PFTs. Univariate and multivariable logistic regression models were applied to assess the risk of lung function abnormalities and respiratory symptoms.ResultsIn total, 10,396 participants were included (mean age: 58.3 years, male: 43.6%). In multiple regression analysis, higher RH was negatively associated with the forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV1)/forced vital capacity (FVC) ratio across various time lags, while FVC was positively correlated with long-term RH exposure. In multiple logistic analysis adjusted for clinical and environmental covariates, long-term higher RH exposure was associated with a lower risk of restrictive lung disease (odds ratio [OR] at 4-year moving average [MA]: 0.978, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.959-0.997), while mid-term RH exposure decreased the risk of chronic cough (OR at 90-day MA: 0.968, 95% CI: 0.948-0.987) and sputum production (OR at 90-day MA: 0.985, 95% CI: 0.969-1.001).ConclusionsHigher RH was negatively associated with lung function and increased the risk of obstructive lung disease, whereas mid-term RH exposure reduced the risk of chronic cough and sputum production.

Project description:BackgroundPrevious research has suggested that poor oral health is positively associated with frailty. The objective of this study was to explore associations of key oral diseases (periodontal disease, tooth loss), and oral hygiene and management behaviors with the level of frailty in community-dwelling older Korean adults using national representative survey data.MethodsThis study used cross-sectional, 6th and 7th Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES VI, VII) data. Adults aged 50+ years were included. Frailty was measured using frailty phenotype (FP) and frailty index (FI). FP was determined using five frailty criteria, i.e., weight loss, weakness, exhaustion, slowness, or low physical activity, and the level of frailty was classified with the number of criteria present (robust, none; pre-frail, 1-2; frail, 3+). FI was determined using a 44-item FI constructed according to a standard protocol, and the level of frailty was classified as robust (FI: ≤ 0.08), pre-frail (FI: 0.08-0.25), and frail (FI: ≥ 0.25). Multiple ordinal regression analyses were conducted with each type of frailty as the outcome variable. Independent variables of interest were the periodontal status, number of teeth, and practices on oral hygiene and management. Analyses were additionally adjusted for participants' socioeconomic, diet, and behavioral characteristics.ResultsThe prevalence of frailty was 4.38% according to the FP classification (n = 4156), 10.74% according to the FI classification (n = 15,073). In the final adjusted model, having more teeth and brushing after all three meals were significantly associated with lower odds of being more frail (in both frailty models); no significant association was observed between periodontal disease and frailty.ConclusionsFindings from this study show having more teeth and practicing adequate brushing are significantly associated with frailty. Due to limitations of the study design, well-designed longitudinal studies are needed to confirm these findings.

Project description:Hyperuricemia and anemia share several comorbidities, but the association between the two conditions remains unclear. The purpose of this study was to investigate the association between hyperuricemia and anemia. Data of 10794 subjects from the Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey conducted in 2016-2017 were analyzed using multivariate logistic regression analyses. An association between anemia and hyperuricemia was not evident in subjects without chronic kidney disease (CKD). In patients with CKD, anemia increased the risk of hyperuricemia by 2-fold. This association remained significant when adjusting for the glomerular filtration rate. In subgroup analyses, the association of anemia with hyperuricemia was significant in subjects aged ≥65 years, and in those with diabetes or hypertension. Subgroup analyses of CKD patients showed similar results. In the current study using data from Korean representative samples, anemia in subjects with CKD was associated with a 2-fold increase in the risk of hyperuricemia, which remained significant even after adjustment for renal function.

Project description:BackgroundThere is only limited evidence for an association between calcium (Ca) and depression, and the relationship was inconsistent. Therefore, the aim of this study was to assess the relationship between dietary Ca and the risk of depressive symptoms in individuals over the age of 18 in the US.MethodsWe extracted 14,971 participants from the US National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2007-2016 to probe their associations. Dietary Ca intake was measured through 24 h dietary recall method. Patients with the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) ≥ 10 scores were believed to have depressive symptoms. The association between dietary Ca and depressive symptoms was investigated using multivariate logistic regression, sensitivity analysis, and restricted cubic spline regression.ResultsIn this study, 7.6% (1,144/14,971) of them had depressive symptoms. After adjusting for sex, age, race, poverty to income ratio (PIR), marital status, education, body mass index (BMI), caffeine intake, carbohydrates intake, total energy intake, smoking status, alcohol consumption, physical activity, diabetes, hypertension, severe cardiovascular disease (CVD), cancer, serum vitamin D, serum Ca, and Ca supplement, the adjusted ORs value [95% confidence interval (CI)] of depression for the lowest category (Q1 ≤ 534 mg/day) vs. Q2-Q4 of Ca intake were 0.83 (0.69-0.99), 0.97 (0.65-0.95), and 0.80 (0.63-0.98) with the p for trend (p = 0.014). The relationship between dietary Ca intake and depressive symptoms was linear (non-linear p = 0.148). None of the interactions were significant except among races (p for interaction = 0.001).ConclusionAssociation between dietary Ca and the prevalence of depressive symptoms in US adults. And Ca intake was negatively associated with the risk of depressive symptoms. As Ca intake increased, the prevalence of depressive symptoms decreased.

Project description:Endometriosis is a multifactorial disease associated with inflammation. Vitamin D has anti-inflammatory, antiproliferative, anti-oxidative, and immunomodulatory effects. Whether vitamin D levels are correlated with endometriosis is a subject of ongoing debate. This study aimed to examine the association between endometriosis and serum vitamin D levels. From the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, this study examined the cross-sectional data of American women aged 20-54 years from 2001 to 2006. After adjusting for covariates, multivariable logistic regression analysis was used to assess correlations. A total of 3,232 women were included in this study. The multiple linear regression model demonstrated a negative correlation between the serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D3 (cholecalciferol) concentration and the risk of endometriosis after controlling for all confounding variables. The odds ratio was 0.73 with a 95% confidence interval of 0.54-0.97 in the adequate vitamin D level group compared with the insufficient vitamin D level group. Our results showed that endometriosis was inversely correlated with serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D3 levels. Further research is needed to establish a causal relationship and determine the potential benefits of maintaining sufficient vitamin D levels for endometriosis prevention.

Project description:It has been suggested that periodontitis is associated with metabolic abnormalities including non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). The fatty liver index (FLI) is a non-invasive surrogate marker and predictor of NAFLD. We aimed to determine whether FLI itself would be associated with periodontitis through a secondary analysis of previously reported nationally representative probability sample data of the Korean population. FLI was calculated from a previously developed algorithm which combines measures of body mass index (BMI), waist circumference, triglyceride, and gamma-glutamyl transferase (GGT). Periodontitis was diagnosed based on the Community Periodontal Index (CPI) developed by the World Health Organization. Of 4,272 participants, 26.1% were diagnosed with periodontitis. Higher FLI was associated with a higher prevalence of periodontitis (Odds ratio (OR) highest vs. lowest quartile of FLI,1.63; 95% confidence interval (CI), 1.23-2.16; P = 0.001 for trend) adjusting for confounding factors. In the highest FLI quartile, prevalence of periodontitis was higher in individuals with diabetes (OR highest vs. lowest quartile of FLI, 2.89; 95% CI, 1.01-8.27 for diabetic subgroup; OR highest vs. lowest quartile of FLI, 1.45; 95% CI, 1.07-1.96 for non-diabetic subgroup). In summary, FLI was associated with prevalent periodontitis.

Project description:BackgroundAllergic sensitization is a risk factor for asthma and allergic diseases. The relationship between ambient air pollution and allergic sensitization is unclear.ObjectiveTo investigate the relationship between ambient air pollution and allergic sensitization in a nationally representative sample of the US population.MethodsWe linked annual average concentrations of nitrogen dioxide (NO2), particulate matter ≤10 μm (PM10), particulate matter ≤2.5 μm (PM2.5), and summer concentrations of ozone (O3), to allergen-specific immunoglobulin E (IgE) data for participants in the 2005-2006 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). In addition to the monitor-based air pollution estimates, we used the Community Multiscale Air Quality (CMAQ) model to increase the representation of rural participants in our sample. Logistic regression with population-based sampling weights was used to calculate adjusted prevalence odds ratios per 10 ppb increase in O3 and NO2, per 10 μg/m(3) increase in PM10, and per 5 μg/m(3) increase in PM2.5 adjusting for race, gender, age, socioeconomic status, smoking, and urban/rural status.ResultsUsing CMAQ data, increased levels of NO2 were associated with positive IgE to any (OR 1.15, 95% CI 1.04, 1.27), inhalant (OR 1.17, 95% CI 1.02, 1.33), and indoor (OR 1.16, 95% CI 1.03, 1.31) allergens. Higher PM2.5 levels were associated with positivity to indoor allergen-specific IgE (OR 1.24, 95% CI 1.13, 1.36). Effect estimates were similar using monitored data.ConclusionsIncreased ambient NO2 was consistently associated with increased prevalence of allergic sensitization.

Project description:Migraine is related to brain energy deficiency. Niacin is a required coenzyme in mitochondrial energy metabolism. However, the relationship between dietary niacin and migraines remains uncertain. We aimed to evaluate the relationship between dietary niacin and migraine. This study used cross-sectional data from people over 20 years old who took part in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey between 1999 and 2004, collecting details on their severe headaches or migraines, dietary niacin intake, and several other essential variables. There were 10,246 participants, with 20.1% (2064/10,246) who experienced migraines. Compared with individuals with lower niacin consumption Q1 (≤12.3 mg/day), the adjusted OR values for dietary niacin intake and migraine in Q2 (12.4−18.3 mg/day), Q3 (18.4−26.2 mg/day), and Q4 (≥26.3 mg/day) were 0.83 (95% CI: 0.72−0.97, p = 0.019), 0.74 (95% CI: 0.63−0.87, p < 0.001), and 0.72 (95% CI: 0.58−0.88, p = 0.001), respectively. The association between dietary niacin intake and migraine exhibited an L-shaped curve (nonlinear, p = 0.011). The OR of developing migraine was 0.975 (95% CI: 0.956−0.994, p = 0.011) in participants with niacin intake < 21.0 mg/day. The link between dietary niacin intake and migraine in US adults is L-shaped, with an inflection point of roughly 21.0 mg/day.

Project description:Background and Objectives: Hyperuricemia is associated with a variety of comorbidities. The objective of this study was to investigate the association between hyperuricemia and hearing impairment in Korean adults. Materials and Methods: Audiometric and laboratory test data from the 2019 to 2020 Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES) were used for analysis. Hearing impairment was defined as a pure-tone average (0.5, 1, 2, 4 kHz) threshold level ≥ 41 decibels. The definition of hyperuricemia was different for males and females: >7 mg/dL for males vs. >6 mg/dL for females. Results: A total of 4857 (weight n = 17,990,725) subjects were analyzed. The mean age was 56.8 years old. The weighted prevalence was 12.1% for hyperuricemia and 2.5% for gout. The prevalence of hearing impairment was 13.4%. In the univariable analysis, hyperuricemia was significantly associated with hearing impairment. However, the diagnosis of gout was not associated with hearing impairment. In the multivariable analysis, hyperuricemia (odds ratios (OR): 1.41, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.03-1.92, p = 0.030) was associated with hearing impairment along with age (OR: 1.12, 95% CI: 1.10-1.14, p < 0.001), female sex (OR: 0.43, 95% CI: 0.34-0.64, p < 0.001), education (OR: 0.43, 95% CI: 0.30-0.63, p = 0.001), and occupational noise exposure (OR: 1.67, 95% CI: 1.25-2.22, p = 0.001). In the subgroup analysis, hyperuricemia was associated with hearing impairment in females (OR: 1.59, 95% CI: 1.02-2.48, p = 0.041) and the elderly aged 60 years or more (OR: 1.45, 95% CI: 1.05-1.99, p = 0.023). Conclusions: Hyperuricemia was independently associated with hearing impairment, especially in females and the elderly aged 60 years or more.
