The impact of secondary forest regeneration on ground-dwelling ant communities in the Tropical Andes.

ABSTRACT: Natural regeneration of abandoned farmland provides an important opportunity to contribute to global reforestation targets, including the Bonn Challenge. Of particular importance are the montane tropics, where a long history of farming, frequently on marginal soils, has rendered many ecosystems highly degraded and hotspots of extinction risk. Ants play crucial roles in ecosystem functioning, and a key question is how time since abandonment and elevation (and inherent temperature gradients therein) affect patterns of ant recovery within secondary forest systems. Focusing on the Colombian Andes across a 1300 m altitudinal gradient and secondary forest (2-30 years) recovering on abandoned cattle pastures, we find that over time ant community composition and species richness recovered towards that of primary forest. However, these relationships are strongly dependent on elevation with the more open and warmer pasturelands supporting more ants than either primary or secondary forest at a particular elevation. The loss of species richness and change in species composition with elevation is less severe in pasture than forests, suggesting that conditions within pasture and its remaining scattered trees, hedgerows and forest fragments, are more favourable for some species, which are likely in or near thermal debt. Promoting and protecting natural regenerating forests over the long term in the montane tropics will likely offer significant potential for returning ant communities towards primary forest levels.

Project description:Beta diversity - the variation in species composition among spatially discrete communities - and sampling grain - the size of samples being compared - may alter our perspectives of diversity within and between landscapes before and after agricultural conversion. Such assumptions are usually based on point comparisons, which do not accurately capture actual differences in total diversity. Beta diversity is often not rigorously examined. We investigated the beta diversity of ground-foraging ant communities in fragmented oil palm and forest landscapes in Sabah, Malaysia, using diversity metrics transformed from Hill number equivalents to remove dependences on alpha diversity. We compared the beta diversities of oil palm and forest, across three hierarchically nested sampling grains. We found that oil palm and forest communities had a greater percentage of total shared species when larger samples were compared. Across all grains and disregarding relative abundances, there was higher beta diversity of all species among forest communities. However, there were higher beta diversities of common and very abundant (dominant) species in oil palm as compared to forests. Differences in beta diversities between oil palm and forest were greatest at the largest sampling grain. Larger sampling grains in oil palm may generate bigger species pools, increasing the probability of shared species with forest samples. Greater beta diversity of all species in forest may be attributed to rare species. Oil palm communities may be more heterogeneous in common and dominant species because of variable community assembly events. Rare and also common species are better captured at larger grains, boosting differences in beta diversity between larger samples of forest and oil palm communities. Although agricultural landscapes support a lower total diversity than natural forests, diversity especially of abundant species is still important for maintaining ecosystem stability. Diversity in agricultural landscapes may be greater than expected when beta diversity is accounted for at large spatial scales.

Shaner (2018) Resource events such as typhoon-triggered greenfall have consequences for multiple ecological mechanisms, ranging from population dynamics and trophic interactions to ecosystem processes. Arthropods are sensitive to environmental disturbances, and many taxa have been used as indicator species. In a field experiment, we tested the effects of greenfall on ground-dwelling arthropods (mostly litter-dwelling taxa) in a forest of Taiwan red pine (Pinus taiwanensis) in the summer of 2013. Of 20 field plots (5 × 5 m), half received P. taiwanensis greenfall while the other half served as unaltered controls. As predicted, some arthropod taxa responded more strongly than others to the greenfall addition. Among the examined arthropod taxa (Araneae, Coleoptera: Carabidae, Coleoptera: Staphylinidae, Hymenoptera: Formicidae, Collembola, Isopoda: Oniscidea), the predatory staphylid beetles (Staphylinidae) responded positively to greenfall addition while the larger-sized detritivore woodlice (Oniscidea) responded negatively. Contrary to our prediction of a positive response, the smaller-sized detritivore springtails (Collembola) were unaffected by the greenfall addition. At the beginning of this study, we observed short-term effects of a naturally- occurring typhoon, to which springtails and ants (Formicidae) responded negatively while staphylid beetles responded positively. Also contrary to our prediction, these taxon-specific responses did not suffice to alter the composition of arthropod communities. We concluded that the intra-annual effects of typhoons-specifically those associated with greenfall-are more likely to impact certain taxa, including staphylid beetles, woodlice, springtails and ants. At the taxonomic level examined here, these intra-annual effects on community composition are non-detectable. As typhoon frequency and intensity are likely to change with global warming, the study makes a timely contribution to our understanding of typhoon-induced ecological dynamics in subtropical plantation forests.

Project description:Light is a key resource for tree performance and hence, tree species partition spatial and temporal gradients in light availability. Although light distribution drives tree performance and species replacement during secondary forest succession, we yet lack understanding how light distribution changes with tropical forest development.This study aims to evaluate how changes in forest structure lead to changes in vertical and horizontal light heterogeneity during tropical forest succession.We described successional patterns in light using a chronosequence approach in which we compared 14 Mexican secondary forest stands that differ in age (8-32 years) since agricultural abandonment. For each stand, we measured vertical light profiles in 16 grid cells, and structural parameters (diameter at breast height, height and crown dimensions) for each tree.During succession, we found a rapid increase in stand size (basal area, crown area and length) and stand differentiation (i.e. a gradual leaf distribution along the forest profile), which leads to fast changes in light conditions and more light heterogeneity. The inflection points of the vertical light gradient (i.e. the absolute height at which 50% relative light intensity is attained) rapidly moved towards higher heights in the first 20 years, indicating that larger amounts of light are intercepted by canopy trees. Light attenuation rate (i.e. the rate of light extinction) decreased during succession due to slower accumulation of the crown area with height. Understorey light intensity and heterogeneity slightly decreased during succession because of an increase in crown size and a decrease in lateral gap frequency. Understorey relative light intensity was 1.56% at 32 years after abandonment.Synthesis. During succession, light conditions changed linearly, which should lead to a continuous and constant replacement of species. Especially in later successional stages, stronger vertical light gradients can limit the regeneration of light-demanding pioneer species and increase the proportion of shade-tolerant late-successional species under the canopy. These changes in light conditions were largely driven by the successional changes in forest structure, as basal area strongly determined the height where most light is absorbed, whereas crown area, and to a lesser extent crown length, determined light distribution.
