New taxa of Rhododendron tschonoskii alliance (Ericaceae) from East Asia.

ABSTRACT: Three new taxa, Rhododendron sohayakiense Y.Watan. & T.Yukawa (Ericaceae), and its two varieties, var. kiusianum Y.Watan., T.Yukawa & T.Minamitani and var. koreanum Y.Watan. & T.Yukawa are described and illustrated from Japan and South Korea. They can be distinguished from each other and from the other members of the R. tschonoskii alliance, i.e. R. tschonoskii, R. tetramerum, R. trinerve and R. tsusiophyllum, through their combination of leaf size, leaf morphologies including lateral nerves on abaxial leaf surface, corolla morphologies including number of corolla lobes, style length and anther form. Phylogenetic inferences based on chloroplast DNA and genome-wide sequences revealed that each of the three new taxa is monophyletic and they further form a clade. Distributions of the three taxa are also clearly separated from each other and also from the other members of the R. tschonoskii alliance.

New corticioid taxa in Phanerochaetaceae (Polyporales, Basidiomycota) from East Asia.

Project description:The species diversity, taxonomy, and phylogeny of five corticioid genera of Phanerochaetaceae, namely, Hyphodermella, Roseograndinia, Phlebiopsis, Rhizochaete, and Phanerochaete, in East Asia are studied by using the morphological and molecular methods. Phylogenetic analyses were performed separately for the Donkia, Phlebiopsis, Rhizochaete, and Phanerochaete clades based on ITS1-5.8S-ITS2 and nrLSU sequence data. In total, seven new species were found, two new combinations are suggested, and a new name is proposed. In the Donkia clade, Hyphodermella sensu stricto was strongly supported with two new lineages, namely H. laevigata and H. tropica, which were recovered. Hyphodermella aurantiaca and H. zixishanensis are members of Roseograndinia, while R. jilinensis is proved to be a later synonym of H. aurantiaca. In the Phlebiopsis clade, P. cana sp. nov. was found on the bamboo from tropical Asia. In the Rhizochaete clade, four new species, R. nakasoneae, R. subradicata, R. terrestris, and R. yunnanensis were recovered based mainly on molecular analyses. In the Phanerochaete clade, P. subsanguinea nom. nov. is proposed to replace Phanerochaete rhizomorpha C.L. Zhao & D.Q. Wang, which is an invalid name because it was published after Phanerochaete rhizomorpha C.C. Chen, Sheng H. Wu & S.H. He, representing another species. Descriptions and illustrations are provided for the new species, and discussions are given for new taxa and names. Identification keys to Hyphodermella species worldwide and Rhizochaete species in China are given separately.

Genetic and phenotypic differentiation between invasive and native Rhododendron (Ericaceae) taxa and the role of hybridization.

Project description:Hybridization has been repeatedly put forward to explain the invasiveness of Rhododendron ponticum L. in the British Isles. The present study investigates the pattern of ecotypic differentiation and hybridization among native North American R. catawbiense and R. maximum, native R. ponticum from Georgia and Spain, and invasive R. ponticum from Ireland and aims to assess the contribution of hybridization for Rhododendron invasion in the British Isles. Six populations per taxon were analyzed with AFLP markers for genetic dissimilarity, subjected to germination and growth experiments, and tested for frost hardiness. We assessed variation in morphological and ecological characteristics to identify traits displaying evidence of hybridization, thus, promoting invasiveness. Molecular marker analyses revealed a clear distinction between North American R. catawbiense and R. maximum on the one hand, and all R. ponticum populations on the other hand, displaying a complete intermixture of native Spanish and invasive Irish populations. Multivariate analyses of traits revealed leaf length-width ratio, relative growth rates (RGRs) in leaf length, root biomass, and shoot-root ratio to significantly discriminate between the different taxa and unequivocally assigned invasive Irish R. ponticum to the Spanish phenotypes. While the Irish R. ponticum had similar growth traits as conspecific native R. ponticum provenances, germination and biomass allocation were more similar to North American R. catawbiense and R. maximum. Hybridization did not contribute to explaining invasiveness of R. ponticum in Ireland. The similarity in germination and biomass allocation of invasive Irish R. ponticum and North American species has evolved independently and can more probably be attributed to an independent shift within the Ponticum cluster in Ireland.

Project description:A new species of the Rhododendron (Ericaceae) in subgen. Tsutsusisect.Tsutsusi from Puding county of Guizhou, China, is described and illustrated. The new species, R.pudingense X.Y. Dai, C.H. Yang & Y.P. Ma, is similar to R.myrsinifolium Ching ex Fang et M. Y. He and R.minutiflorum Hu, but it can be easily distinguished by its length and being pubescent on inner surface of corolla tube, sparse hairs below the middle of filament and the glabrous style.

A new synonym of Enkianthusperulatus (Ericaceae) in East Asia, based on morphological and molecular evidence.

Project description:Enkianthuscalophyllus was once treated as a synonym of E.serrulatus. However, field observations indicate that E.calophyllus is distinct from E.serrulatus but resembles E.perulatus in flowers, leaves, fruits and seeds. Hence, a taxonomic revision of these species was conducted based on morphological comparisons of flowers, leaves, fruits and seeds, as well as molecular analyses of nuclear ribosomal internal transcribed spacer (nrITS) and six plastid DNA markers (psbA-trnH, rpl32-trnL, trnL-trnF, rps16-trnQ, psbJ-petA and matK). The morphological and molecular results reject the synonymization of E.calophyllus with E.serrulatus, and instead show it to be placed in a clade with E.perulatus. Based on molecular evidence and a reassessment of the morphology we synonymize E.calophyllus with the older name E.perulatus.

The complete chloroplast genome of rhododendron williamsianum (ericaceae).

Project description:Rhododendron williamsianum Rehder & E. H. Wilson 1913, is a plant with important horticultural value. Here we report its chloroplast genome. The total length of the chloroplast genome was 205,424 bp, with a GC content of 35.8%. It consisted of a 107,968 bp large single copy, a 2606 bp small single copy, and a pair of 47,425 bp inverted repeats separating them. Within the chloroplast genome, there were a total of 110 unique genes, which included 76 protein-coding genes, 4 rRNA genes, and 30 tRNA genes. Our phylogenetic analyses indicated that R. williamsianum was closely genetically related to R. sutchuenense and R. jingangshanicum. The findings from this study not only contribute to the genetic database of Rhododendron plants but also have implications for evolutionary research within the family Ericaceae.

This new species is morphologically similar to V.wrightii by having flowers with persistent and leaf-like bracts, long pedicels, and white spherical-urceolate corollas, but is distinguished by having glandular trichomes on the abaxial surface of the leaf blade, shorter pedicels, sparsely pilose corolla ridges, and anther thecae longer than the tubules. A key to the new species and morphologically similar species is also provided.

The length of the R. kawakamii chloroplast genome is 230,777 bp, with a large single-copy region of 146,155 bp, a small single-copy region of 72,082 bp, and a pair of inverted repeat regions (IRA) of 6,270 bp each. The genome contains 77 protein-coding genes, 29 transfer RNA genes, and four ribosomal RNA genes. In addition, the genome contains 81 simple sequence repeats. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that R. kawakamii is genetically related to R. datiandingense.

The complete chloroplast genome of Rhododendron huadingense (Ericaceae).

Project description:Rhododendron huadingense is an important horticultural plant that belongs to the Ericaceae family. In this study, the chloroplast genome sequence of R. huadingense is reported. The chloroplast genome of R. huadingense was 198,952 bp in length and had an angiosperm-typical quadripartite structure with a large single-copy (LSC) region of 108,557 bp, a small single-copy (SSC) region of 53 bp, and two inverted repeat regions (IRs) of 45,171 bp. One hundred and thirteen unique genes including 79 protein-coding genes, 30 transfer RNA (tRNA) genes, and four ribosomal RNA (rRNA) genes were identified in the chloroplast genome. Further phylogenetic analysis revealed a close relationship between R. huadingense and R. molle. The complete chloroplast genome of R. huadingense provides valuable genetic information for the phylogeny, varieties breeding and sustainable utilization of this species.

The complete chloroplast genome of Rhododendron delavayi (Ericaceae).

Project description:Rhododendron delavayi, as a member of Ericaceae family, has been widely used as an important garden flower. The cp genome of R. delavayi exhibited a typical quadripartite cycle with 193,798 bp, comprising of a pair of inverted repeats (IRa and IRb) of 15,494 bp intersected by a large single copy (LSC) region of 160,234 bp and a quite small single copy region of 2576 bp. Totally, 123 unique genes were assembled in this cp genome, including 80 protein genes, 35 tRNAs and 8 rRNAs. Out of these assembled genes, 88 genes (71.54%) were single copy. Phylogenetic analysis based on 14 cp genome of related species showed that the R. delavayi was closely related to Vaccinium oldhamii. This study provides important information for future evolution, genetic and molecular biology studies of Rhododendron.
