Ion mobility and material transport on KBr in air as a function of the relative humidity.

ABSTRACT: Surfaces exposed to air can change their structure due to external influences such as chemical reactions or material exchange and movement. The adsorbed water layer that is present under ambient conditions plays an important role especially for highly soluble materials. Surface atoms can easily diffuse into the thin water layer and, when surface conditions are favorable, they can re-attach to the surface. We collected atomic force microscopy images of KBr surfaces in a humidity-controlled glove box at various relative humidities below 40%. By scratching and poking the surface with the AFM tip, we constructed energetically unfavorable holes or scratch sites and material accumulations and recorded the evolution of these defects as a function of the time. We observed an exponential decay of the size of the defects and material accumulations, and from this data we determined energy barriers to dissolution and aggregation of approximately 0.9 eV.

Diurnal humidity cycle driven selective ion transport across clustered polycation membrane.

Project description:The ability to manipulate the flux of ions across membranes is a key aspect of diverse sectors including water desalination, blood ion monitoring, purification, electrochemical energy conversion and storage. Here we illustrate the potential of using daily changes in environmental humidity as a continuous driving force for generating selective ion flux. Specifically, self-assembled membranes featuring channels composed of polycation clusters are sandwiched between two layers of ionic liquids. One ionic liquid layer is kept isolated from the ambient air, whereas the other is exposed directly to the environment. When in contact with ambient air, the device showcases its capacity to spontaneously produce ion current, with promising power density. This result stems from the moisture content difference of ionic liquid layers across the membrane caused by the ongoing process of moisture absorption/desorption, which instigates selective transmembrane ion flux. Cation flux across the polycation clusters is greatly inhibited because of intensified charge repulsion. However, anions transport across polycation clusters is amplified. Our research underscores the potential of daily cycling humidity as a reliable energy source to trigger ion current and convert it into electrical current.

Effect of Humidity on the Mobilities of Small Ions in Ion Mobility Spectrometry.

Project description:Ions in the ion mobility spectrometry (IMS) are mostly hydrated. A single peak in the drift time spectrum is usually generated by a mixture of ions differing in the number of attached water molecules. Under real IMS detector operating conditions, ions change their composition during movement in the drift region due to the changes in the number of water molecules attached to the ion. The impact of water vapor on the drift times of small ions at different temperatures was studied experimentally using an ion mobility spectrometer. The experiments were carried out for hydronium, ammonium, oxygen, chloride, bromide, and iodide ions. A theoretical model was developed, allowing us to calculate the effective mobility of ions for a given concentration of water vapor and temperature. The basic assumption adopted in this model was the linear dependence of the effective mobility coefficient on the mobility of ions with a certain degree of hydration. The weighting factors in this relationship are the abundances of individual types of ions. These parameters were determined by calculations based on the thermodynamics of the formation and disintegration of ionic clusters. From the known values of temperature, pressure, and humidity, the values of effective mobilities can be predicted quite accurately. The dependencies of reduced mobilities on the average degree of hydration were also determined. For these dependencies, the measurement points on the graphs are gathered along specific lines. This means that the average degree of hydration unambiguously determines the value of reduced mobility for a given type of ions.

DESI Spray Stability in the Negative Ion Mode Is Dependent on Relative Humidity.

Project description:Ambient ionization mass spectrometry (MS) techniques, such as desorption electrospray ionization (DESI), have been increasingly used due to their simplicity, minimal sample preparation requirements, and potential applications in the field and the clinic. However, due to their intrinsic nature, the performance of these methods is susceptible to variations in ambient conditions. Here, we present data that suggests DESI-MS analysis becomes inconsistent below a relative humidity (RH) level of ~ 35%. At low RH, we hypothesize that the DESI spray is subjected to frequent electrical discharges, resulting in unstable ionization and atypical mass spectra. Consequentially, poor image quality is observed when used for tissue imaging. Our results suggest that RH control should be considered in DESI-MS experiments to assure data quality. As air relative humidity increases, infectivity of SARS-CoV-2 decreases within water droplets.

Project description:Water droplets containing the SARS-CoV-2 virus, responsible for coronavirus 2019 transmission, were introduced into a controlled-temperature and -humidity chamber. The SARS-CoV-2 virus with green fluorescent protein tag in droplets was used to infect Caco-2 cells, with viability assessed through flow cytometry and microscopic counting. Whereas temperature fluctuations within typical indoor ranges (20°C-30°C) had minimal impact, we observed a notable decrease in infection rate as the surrounding air's relative humidity increased. By investigating humidity levels between 20% and 70%, we identified a threshold of ≥40% relative humidity as most effective in diminishing SARS-CoV-2 infectivity. We also found that damage of the viral proteins under high relative humidity may be responsible for the decrease in their activity. This outcome supports previous research demonstrating a rise in the concentration of reactive oxygen species within water droplets with elevated relative humidity.

Impacts of air pollution, temperature, and relative humidity on leukocyte distribution: An epigenetic perspective.

Project description:BACKGROUND:Exploring the associations of air pollution and weather variables with blood leukocyte distribution is critical to understand the impacts of environmental exposures on the human immune system. OBJECTIVES:As previous analyses have been mainly based on data from cell counters, which might not be feasible in epidemiologic studies including large populations of long-stored blood samples, we aimed to expand the understanding of this topic by employing the leukocyte distribution estimated by DNA methylation profiles. METHODS:We measured DNA methylation profiles in blood samples using Illumina HumanMethylation450 BeadChip from 1519 visits of 774 Caucasian males participating in the Normative Aging Study. Leukocyte distribution was estimated using Houseman's and Horvath's algorithms. Data on air pollution exposure, temperature, and relative humidity within 28 days before each blood draw was obtained. RESULTS:After fully adjusting for potential covariates, PM2.5, black carbon, particle number, carbon monoxide, nitrogen dioxide, sulfur dioxide, temperature, and relative humidity were associated with the proportions of at least one subtype of leukocytes. Particularly, an interquartile range-higher 28-day average exposure of PM2.5 was associated with 0.147-, 0.054- and 0.101-unit lower proportions (z-scored) of plasma cells, naïve CD8+ T cells, and natural killers, respectively, and 0.059- and 0.161-unit higher proportions (z-scored) of naïve CD4+ T cells and CD8+ T cells, respectively. CONCLUSIONS:Our study suggests that short-term air pollution exposure, temperature, and relative humidity are associated with leukocyte distribution. Our study further provides a successful attempt to use epigenetic patterns to assess the influences of environmental exposures on human immune profiles.

Effect of relative humidity on the gas transport properties of zeolite A/PTMSP mixed matrix membranes.

Project description:Increasing the knowledge of the influence of water vapor in new mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) could favor the integration of novel membrane materials in the recovery of CO2 from wet industrial streams. In this work, the water vapor effect on the N2, CH4 and CO2 permeability through MMMs comprised of 20 wt% hydrophilic zeolite 4A in hydrophobic PTMSP polymer were investigated in the relative humidity range 0-75%. While in the pure PTMSP membranes, the permeability of all gases decreases with water vapor activity, with almost unchanged CO2/N2 and CO2/CH4 selectivities, in zeolite A/PTMSP MMMs, the CO2 permeability increases with increasing water content in the system up to 50% R.H., resulting in an increase in CO2/N2 and CO2/CH4 selectivities with respect to pure PTMSP. Gas sorption was studied so that the effect the residual humidity in the zeolite 4A has on the sorption of the different gases helped explaining the permeability observations. The sorption and humid permeation behavior were evaluated by a simple model equation based on the NELF theory, taking into account the multicomponent gas sorption and diffusion in the presence of humidity, as well as the counteracting effects of the hydrophobic PTMSP and hydrophilic zeolite A in a very accurate way.

Controlling transmembrane ion transport <i>via</i> photo-regulated carrier mobility.

Project description:Stimuli-responsive transmembrane ion carriers allow for targeted and controllable transport activity, with potential applications as therapeutics for channelopathies and cancer, and in fundamental studies into ion transport phenomena. These applications require OFF-ON activation from a fully inactive state which does not exhibit background activity, but this remains challenging to achieve with synthetic transport systems. Here we introduce a novel mechanism for photo-gating mobile ion carriers, which involves modulating the mobility of the carriers within the lipid bilayer membrane. By appending a membrane-targeting anchor to the carrier using a photo-cleavable linker, the carrier's ion transport activity is fully switched off by suppressing its ability to shuttle between the two aqueous-membrane interfaces of the bilayer. The system can be reactivated rapidly in situ within the membrane by photo-triggered cleavage of the anchor to release the mobile ion carrier. This approach does not involve direct functionalization of the ion binding site of the carrier, and so does not require the de novo design of novel ion binding motifs to implement the photo-caging of activity. This work demonstrates that controlling the mobility of artificial transport systems enables precise control over activity, opening up new avenues for spatio-temporally targeted ionophores.

High air humidity dampens salicylic acid pathway and NPR1 function to promote plant disease

Project description:The occurrence of plant disease is determined by interactions among host, pathogen and environment. Air humidity shapes various aspects of plant physiology and high humidity has long been known to promote numerous phyllosphere diseases. However, the molecular basis of how high humidity interferes with plant immunity to favor disease has remained elusive. Here we show that high humidity is associated with an "immuno-compromised" status in Arabidopsis plants. Furthermore, accumulation and signaling of salicylic acid (SA), an important defense hormone, are significantly inhibited under high humidity. NPR1, an SA receptor and central transcriptional co-activator of SA-responsive genes, is less ubiquitinated and displays a lower promoter binding affinity under high humidity. The cellular ubiquitination machinery, particularly the Cullin 3-based E3 ubiquitin ligase mediating NPR1 protein ubiquitination, is down-regulated under high humidity. Importantly, under low humidity the Cullin 3a/b mutant plants phenocopy the low SA gene expression and disease susceptibility that is normally observed under high humidity. Our study uncovers a mechanism by which high humidity dampens a major plant defense pathway and provides new insights into the long-observed air humidity influence on diseases.
