Optical vector analysis with attometer resolution, 90-dB dynamic range and THz bandwidth.

ABSTRACT: Optical vector analysis (OVA) capable of achieving magnitude and phase responses is essential for the fabrication and application of emerging optical devices. Conventional OVA often has to make compromises among resolution, dynamic range, and bandwidth. Here we show an original method to meet the measurement requirements for ultra-wide bandwidth, ultra-high resolution, and ultra-large dynamic range simultaneously, based on an asymmetric optical probe signal generator (ASG) and receiver (ASR). The ASG and ASR remove the measurement errors introduced by the modulation nonlinearity and enable an ultra-large dynamic range. Thanks to the wavelength-independence of the ASG and ASR, the measurement range can increase by 2 N times by applying an N-tone optical frequency comb without complicated operation. In an experiment, OVA with a resolution of 334 Hz (2.67 attometer in the 1550-nm band), a dynamic range of > 90 dB and a measurement range of 1.075 THz is demonstrated.

Partially coherent radar unties range resolution from bandwidth limitations.

Project description:It is widely believed that range resolution, the ability to distinguish between two closely situated targets, depends inversely on the bandwidth of the transmitted radar signal. Here we demonstrate a different type of ranging system, which possesses superior range resolution that is almost completely free of bandwidth limitations. By sweeping over the coherence length of the transmitted signal, the partially coherent radar experimentally demonstrates an improvement of over an order of magnitude in resolving targets, compared to standard coherent radars with the same bandwidth. A theoretical framework is developed to show that the resolution could be further improved without a bound, revealing a tradeoff between bandwidth and sweep time. This concept offers solutions to problems which require high range resolution and accuracy but available bandwidth is limited, as is the case for the autonomous car industry, optical imaging, and astronomy to name just few.

Ultrawide-bandwidth high-resolution all-optical intravascular ultrasound using miniaturized photoacoustic transducer.

Project description:Conventional intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) uses piezoelectric transducers to electrically generate and receive ultrasound. However, it remains a challenge to achieve large bandwidth for high resolution without compromising imaging depth. We report an all-optical IVUS (AO-IVUS) imaging system using picosecond laser pulse-pumped carbon composite for ultrasound excitation and π-phase-shifted fiber Bragg gratings for ultrasound detection. Using this all-optical technique, we achieved ultrawide-bandwidth (147%) and high-resolution (18.6 micrometers) IVUS imaging, which is unattainable by conventional technique. Imaging performance has been characterized in phantoms, presenting 18.6-micrometer axial resolution, 124-micrometer lateral resolution, and 7-millimeter imaging depth. Rotational pullback imaging scans are performed in rabbit iliac artery, porcine coronary artery, and rabbit arteries with drug-eluting metal stents, in parallel with commercial intravenous ultrasound scans as reference. Results demonstrated the advantages of high-resolution AO-IVUS in delineating details in vascular structures, showing great potential in clinical applications.

Nanometer resolution optical coherence tomography using broad bandwidth XUV and soft x-ray radiation.

Project description:Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a non-invasive technique for cross-sectional imaging. It is particularly advantageous for applications where conventional microscopy is not able to image deeper layers of samples in a reasonable time, e.g. in fast moving, deeper lying structures. However, at infrared and optical wavelengths, which are commonly used, the axial resolution of OCT is limited to about 1 μm, even if the bandwidth of the light covers a wide spectral range. Here, we present extreme ultraviolet coherence tomography (XCT) and thus introduce a new technique for non-invasive cross-sectional imaging of nanometer structures. XCT exploits the nanometerscale coherence lengths corresponding to the spectral transmission windows of, e.g., silicon samples. The axial resolution of coherence tomography is thus improved from micrometers to a few nanometers. Tomographic imaging with an axial resolution better than 18 nm is demonstrated for layer-type nanostructures buried in a silicon substrate. Using wavelengths in the water transmission window, nanometer-scale layers of platinum are retrieved with a resolution better than 8 nm. XCT as a nondestructive method for sub-surface tomographic imaging holds promise for several applications in semiconductor metrology and imaging in the water window.

Silk: Optical Properties over 12.6 Octaves THz-IR-Visible-UV Range.

Project description:Domestic (Bombyx mori) and wild (Antheraea pernyi) silk fibers were characterised over a wide spectral range from THz 8 cm -1 ( λ = 1.25 mm, f = 0.24 THz) to deep-UV 50 × 10 3 cm - 1 ( λ = 200 nm, f = 1500 THz) wavelengths or over a 12.6 octave frequency range. Spectral features at β-sheet, α-coil and amorphous fibroin were analysed at different spectral ranges. Single fiber cross sections at mid-IR were used to determine spatial distribution of different silk constituents and revealed an α-coil rich core and more broadly spread β-sheets in natural silk fibers obtained from wild Antheraea pernyi moths. Low energy T-ray bands at 243 and 229 cm -1 were observed in crystalline fibers of domestic and wild silk fibers, respectively, and showed no spectral shift down to 78 K temperature. A distinct 20±4 cm-1 band was observed in the crystalline Antheraea pernyi silk fibers. Systematic analysis and assignment of the observed spectral bands is presented. Water solubility and biodegradability of silk, required for bio-medical and sensor applications, are directly inferred from specific spectral bands.

All-optical active THz metasurfaces for ultrafast polarization switching and dynamic beam splitting.

Project description:Miniaturized ultrafast switchable optical components with an extremely compact size and a high-speed response will be the core of next-generation all-optical devices instead of traditional integrated circuits, which are approaching the bottleneck of Moore's Law. Metasurfaces have emerged as fascinating subwavelength flat optical components and devices for light focusing and holography applications. However, these devices exhibit a severe limitation due to their natural passive response. Here we introduce an active hybrid metasurface integrated with patterned semiconductor inclusions for all-optical active control of terahertz waves. Ultrafast modulation of polarization states and the beam splitting ratio are experimentally demonstrated on a time scale of 667 ps. This scheme of hybrid metasurfaces could also be extended to the design of various free-space all-optical active devices, such as varifocal planar lenses, switchable vector beam generators, and components for holography in ultrafast imaging, display, and high-fidelity terahertz wireless communication systems.

Over 100-THz bandwidth selective difference frequency generation at LaAlO3/SrTiO3 nanojunctions.

Project description:The ability to combine continuously tunable narrow-band terahertz (THz) generation that can access both the far-infrared and mid-infrared regimes with nanometer-scale spatial resolution is highly promising for identifying underlying light-matter interactions and realizing selective control of rotational or vibrational resonances in nanoparticles or molecules. Here, we report selective difference frequency generation with over 100 THz bandwidth via femtosecond optical pulse shaping. The THz emission is generated at nanoscale junctions at the interface of LaAlO3/SrTiO3 (LAO/STO) that is defined by conductive atomic force microscope lithography, with the potential to perform THz spectroscopy on individual nanoparticles or molecules. Numerical simulation of the time-domain signal facilitates the identification of components that contribute to the THz generation. This ultra-wide-bandwidth tunable nanoscale coherent THz source transforms the LAO/STO interface into a promising platform for integrated lab-on-chip optoelectronic devices with various functionalities.

Spatial resolution in dynamic optical coherence elastography.

Project description:Dynamic optical coherence elastography (OCE) tracks elastic wave propagation speed within tissue, enabling quantitative three-dimensional imaging of the elastic modulus. We show that propagating mechanical waves are mode converted at interfaces, creating a finite region on the order of an acoustic wavelength where there is not a simple one-to-one correspondence between wave speed and elastic modulus. Depending on the details of a boundary’s geometry and elasticity contrast, highly complex propagating fields produced near the boundary can substantially affect both the spatial resolution and contrast of the elasticity image. We demonstrate boundary effects on Rayleigh waves incident on a vertical boundary between media of different shear moduli. Lateral resolution is defined by the width of the transition zone between two media and is the limit at which a physical inclusion can be detected with full contrast. We experimentally demonstrate results using a spectral-domain OCT system on tissue-mimicking phantoms, which are replicated using numerical simulations. It is shown that the spatial resolution in dynamic OCE is determined by the temporal and spatial characteristics (i.e., bandwidth and spatial pulse width) of the propagating mechanical wave. Thus, mechanical resolution in dynamic OCE inherently differs from the optical resolution of the OCT imaging system.

Vector-Field dynamic X-ray (VF-DXR) using Optical Flow Method.

Project description:ObjectivesTo explore the feasibility of Vector-Field DXR (VF-DXR) using optical flow method (OFM).MethodsFive healthy volunteers and five COPD patients were studied. DXR was performed in the standing position using a prototype X-ray system (Konica Minolta Inc., Tokyo, Japan). During the examination, participants took several tidal breaths and one forced breath. DXR image file was converted to the videos with different frames per second (fps): 15 fps, 7.5 fps, five fps, three fps, and 1.5 fps. Pixel-value gradient was calculated by the serial change of pixel value, which was subsequently converted mathematically to motion vector using OFM. Color-coding map and vector projection into horizontal and vertical components were also tested.ResultsDynamic motion of lung and thorax was clearly visualized using VF-DXR with an optimal frame rate of 5 fps. Color-coding map and vector projection into horizontal and vertical components were also presented. VF-DXR technique was also applied in COPD patients.ConclusionThe feasibility of VF-DXR was demonstrated with small number of healthy subjects and COPD patients.Advances in knowledgeA new Vector-Field Dynamic X-ray (VF-DXR) technique is feasible for dynamic visualization of lung, diaphragms, thoracic cage, and cardiac contour.

Optical monitoring of polymerizations in droplets with high temporal dynamic range.

Project description:The ability to optically monitor a chemical reaction and generate an in situ readout is an important enabling technology, with applications ranging from the monitoring of reactions in flow, to the critical assessment step for combinatorial screening, to mechanistic studies on single reactant and catalyst molecules. Ideally, such a method would be applicable to many polymers and not require only a specific monomer for readout. It should also be applicable if the reactions are carried out in microdroplet chemical reactors, which offer a route to massive scalability in combinatorial searches. We describe a convenient optical method for monitoring polymerization reactions, fluorescence polarization anisotropy monitoring, and show that it can be applied in a robotically generated microdroplet. Further, we compare our method to an established optical reaction monitoring scheme, the use of Aggregation-Induced Emission (AIE) dyes, and find the two monitoring schemes offer sensitivity to different temporal regimes of the polymerization, meaning that the combination of the two provides an increased temporal dynamic range. Anisotropy is sensitive at early times, suggesting it will be useful for detecting new polymerization "hits" in searches for new reactivity, while the AIE dye responds at longer times, suggesting it will be useful for detecting reactions capable of reaching higher molecular weights.

Optical damage limit of efficient spintronic THz emitters.

Project description:THz pulses are generated from femtosecond pulse-excited ferromagnetic/nonmagnetic spintronic heterostructures via inverse spin Hall effect. The highest possible THz signal strength from spintronic THz emitters is limited by the optical damage threshold of the corresponding heterostructures at the excitation wavelength. For the thickness-optimized spintronic heterostructure, the THz generation efficiency does not saturate with the excitation fluence even up till the damage threshold. Bilayer (Fe, CoFeB)/(Pt, Ta)-based ferromagnetic/nonmagnetic (FM/NM) spintronic heterostructures have been studied for an optimized performance for THz generation when pumped by sub-50 fs amplified laser pulses at 800 nm. Among them, CoFeB/Pt is the best combination for an efficient THz source. The optimized FM/NM spintronic heterostructure having α-phase Ta as the nonmagnetic layer shows the highest damage threshold as compared to those with Pt, irrespective of their generation efficiency. The damage threshold of the Fe/Ta heterostructure on a quartz substrate is ∼85 GW/cm2.
