The variables of society behavior, municipal equipment and cost of services were the three top rank variables in predicting tourist satisfaction. Considering the capacity of the ancient city of Hamadan for tourism, policy-makers can use our results in planning for providing a sustainable development and flourishing tourism industry in this city.

Project description:PremiseTo improve forest conservation monitoring, we developed a protocol to automatically count and identify the seeds of plant species with minimal resource requirements, making the process more efficient and less dependent on human operators.Methods and resultsSeeds from six North American conifer tree species were separated from leaf litter and imaged on a flatbed scanner. In the most successful species-classification approach, an ImageJ macro automatically extracted measurements for random forest classification in the software R. The method allows for good classification accuracy, and the same process can be used to train the model on other species.ConclusionsThis protocol is an adaptable tool for efficient and consistent identification of seed species or potentially other objects. Automated seed classification is efficient and inexpensive, making it a practical solution that enhances the feasibility of large-scale monitoring projects in conservation biology.

Project description:Random forest is a popular prediction approach for handling high dimensional covariates. However, it often becomes infeasible to interpret the obtained high dimensional and non-parametric model. Aiming for an interpretable predictive model, we develop a forward variable selection method using the continuous ranked probability score (CRPS) as the loss function. eOur stepwise procedure selects at each step a variable that minimizes the CRPS risk and a stopping criterion for selection is designed based on an estimation of the CRPS risk difference of two consecutive steps. We provide mathematical motivation for our method by proving that in a population sense, the method attains the optimal set. In a simulation study, we compare the performance of our method with an existing variable selection method, for different sample sizes and correlation strength of covariates. Our method is observed to have a much lower false positive rate. We also demonstrate an application of our method to statistical post-processing of daily maximum temperature forecasts in the Netherlands. Our method selects about 10% covariates while retaining the same predictive power.

Project description:China became the country with the largest global carbon emissions in 2007. Cities are regional population and economic centers and are the main sources of carbon emissions. However, factors influencing carbon emissions from cities can vary with geographic location and the development history of the cities, rendering it difficult to explicitly quantify the influence of individual factors on carbon emissions. In this study, random forest (RF) machine learning algorithms were applied to analyze the relationships between factors and carbon emissions in cities using real-world data from Chinese cities. Seventy-three cities in three urban agglomerations within the Yangtze River Economic Belt were evaluated with respect to urban carbon emissions using data from regional energy balance tables for the years 2000, 2007, 2012, and 2017. The RF algorithm was then used to select 16 prototypical cities based on 10 influencing factors that affect urban carbon emissions while considering five primary factors: population, industry, technology levels, consumption, and openness to the outside world. Subsequently, 18 consecutive years of data from 2000 to 2017 were used to construct RFs to investigate the temporal predictability of carbon emission variation in the 16 cities based on regional differences. Results indicated that the RF approach is a practical tool to study the connection between various influencing factors and carbon emissions in the Yangtze River Economic Belt from different perspectives. Furthermore, regional differences among the primary carbon emission influencing factors for each city were clearly observed and were related to urban population characteristics, urbanization level, industrial structures, and degree of openness to the outside world. These factors variably affected different cities, but the results indicate that regional emission reductions have achieved positive results, with overall simulation trends shifting from underestimation to overestimation of emissions.

Project description:Cryptographic algorithm identification, which refers to analyzing and identifying the encryption algorithm used in cryptographic system, is of great significance to cryptanalysis. In order to improve the accuracy of identification work, this article proposes a new ensemble learning-based model named hybrid k-nearest neighbor and random forest (HKNNRF), and constructs a block cipher algorithm identification scheme. In the ciphertext-only scenario, we use NIST randomness test methods to extract ciphertext features, and carry out binary-classification and five-classification experiments on the block cipher algorithms using proposed scheme. Experiments show that when the ciphertext size and other experimental conditions are the same, compared with the baselines, the HKNNRF model has higher classification accuracy. Specifically, the average binary-classification identification accuracy of HKNNRF is 69.5%, which is 13%, 12.5%, and 10% higher than the single-layer support vector machine (SVM), k-nearest neighbor (KNN), and random forest (RF) respectively. The five-classification identification accuracy can reach 34%, which is higher than the 21% accuracy of KNN, the 22% accuracy of RF and the 23% accuracy of SVM respectively under the same experimental conditions.

Project description:BackgroundRehabilitation of the edentulous patients has always been a challenge. The success of conventional complete denture therapy might be affected by several factors such as patients' age, personality, previous denture wearing experience, expectations, aesthetics, residual ridge form and anatomy, denture quality, the method of its construction, dentist experience, and dentist-patient relations.ObjectivesThe aim of this study was to compare patient satisfaction with complete dentures provided by fourth and fifth year dental students and prosthodontists with a minimum of 5 years' experience at the University of Jordan Hospital 8 weeks after insertion.MethodsQuestionnaires were distributed to a total of 60 completely edentulous patients who received complete maxillary and mandibular dentures. Besides demographic questions, the questionnaire included questions that probed the patient's satisfaction with his maxillary and mandibular dentures in general using two types of scales.ResultsResults indicated that dentist experience does not affect patients' satisfaction with their complete dentures. Our results also indicated that patients who had previous dentures could adapt more easily and were generally more satisfied with their newly inserted dentures especially with regard to their chewing ability and comfort with their mandibular dentures. Gender also influenced patient satisfaction with complete dentures especially the part related to psychological and social disability.ConclusionsResults of this study will help in further understanding factors influencing patient satisfaction with their complete dentures.

Project description:Skin pigment disorders are common cosmetic and medical problems. Many known compounds inhibit the key melanin-producing enzyme, tyrosinase, but their use is limited due to side effects. Natural-derived peptides also display tyrosinase inhibition. Abalone is a good source of peptides, and the abalone proteins have been used widely in pharmaceutical and cosmetic products, but not for melanin inhibition. This study aimed to predict putative tyrosinase inhibitory peptides (TIPs) from abalone, Haliotis diversicolor, using k-nearest neighbor (kNN) and random forest (RF) algorithms. The kNN and RF predictors were trained and tested against 133 peptides with known anti-tyrosinase properties with 97% and 99% accuracy. The kNN predictor suggested 1075 putative TIPs and six TIPs from the RF predictor. Two helical peptides were predicted by both methods and showed possible interaction with the predicted structure of mushroom tyrosinase, similar to those of the known TIPs. These two peptides had arginine and aromatic amino acids, which were common to the known TIPs, suggesting non-competitive inhibition on the tyrosinase. Therefore, the first version of the TIP predictors could suggest a reasonable number of the TIP candidates for further experiments. More experimental data will be important for improving the performance of these predictors, and they can be extended to discover more TIPs from other organisms. The confirmation of TIPs in abalone will be a new commercial opportunity for abalone farmers and industry.

Project description:Background: Understanding the location and cell-type specific binding of Transcription Factors (TFs) is important in the study of gene regulation. Computational prediction of TF binding sites is challenging, because TFs often bind only to short DNA motifs and cell-type specific co-factors may work together with the same TF to determine binding. Here, we consider the problem of learning a general model for the prediction of TF binding using DNase1-seq data and TF motif description in form of position specific energy matrices (PSEMs). Methods: We use TF ChIP-seq data as a gold-standard for model training and evaluation. Our contribution is a novel ensemble learning approach using random forest classifiers. In the context of the ENCODE-DREAM in vivo TF binding site prediction challenge we consider different learning setups. Results: Our results indicate that the ensemble learning approach is able to better generalize across tissues and cell-types compared to individual tissue-specific classifiers or a classifier built based upon data aggregated across tissues. Furthermore, we show that incorporating DNase1-seq peaks is essential to reduce the false positive rate of TF binding predictions compared to considering the raw DNase1 signal. Conclusions: Analysis of important features reveals that the models preferentially select motifs of other TFs that are close interaction partners in existing protein protein-interaction networks. Project description:Herein, we present the results of a machine learning approach we developed to single out correct 3D docking models of protein-protein complexes obtained by popular docking software. To this aim, we generated 3×104 docking models for each of the 230 complexes in the protein-protein benchmark, version 5, using three different docking programs (HADDOCK, FTDock and ZDOCK), for a cumulative set of ≈7×106 docking models. Three different machine learning approaches (Random Forest, Supported Vector Machine and Perceptron) were used to train classifiers with 158 different scoring functions (features). The Random Forest algorithm outperformed the other two algorithms and was selected for further optimization. Using a features selection algorithm, and optimizing the random forest hyperparameters, allowed us to train and validate a random forest classifier, named COnservation Driven Expert System (CoDES). Testing of CoDES on independent datasets, as well as results of its comparative performance with machine learning methods recently developed in the field for the scoring of docking decoys, confirm its state-of-the-art ability to discriminate correct from incorrect decoys both in terms of global parameters and in terms of decoys ranked at the top positions.Supplementary informationSupplementary data are available at Bioinformatics Advances online.Software and data availability statementThe docking models are available at https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.4012018. Project description:The objective of the study is to explore the factors that influence the job satisfaction and organizational commitment of primary care providers in China, with a focus on the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and the rescission of restriction policies. We utilized the 20-item Minnesota Satisfaction Questionnaire (MSQ) and the 25-item organizational commitment survey to assess job satisfaction and organizational commitment. In total, 435 valid responses were included in our analysis. The average scores for job satisfaction and organizational commitment were 80.6 and 90.8. After a two-step tuning process, we built random forest models by machine learning. The results show income change, working years, working years in the current institute, and age were the four most important features associated with job satisfaction, organizational commitment, and most of their dimensions. The number of professional fields engaged, gender, job status, and types of endowment insurance were least associated. During pandemic time, income-related factors remain a core concern for primary care providers, whereas job security may lose its importance. These findings suggest that financial bonuses may be an effective way to boost morale, and age-specific motivation plans may be necessary.

Project description:IntroductionSurgical management via penile prosthesis is an option for patients who have failed medical management. There is a paucity of literature surrounding factors contributing to patient satisfaction after implant surgery. The objective of this study was to characterize patients' and surgeons' attitudes toward factors affecting satisfaction with this procedure.MethodsTwo patient cohorts were identified and contacted via email: a medical management of erectile dysfunction (ED) cohort and a penile implant patient cohort. A third cohort, Canadian urologists who perform penile implant surgeries, was also contacted. The surveys consisted of 5-7 questions, including a rating question regarding the importance of various penile implant factors.ResultsForty-six ED patients, 45 post-implant patients, and 12 urologists completed the survey. The mean overall satisfaction on a 10-point scale was 6.49 (standard deviation [SD] 2.92). Most (67%) urologists selected patient satisfaction as one of their least favorite aspects of penile implant surgery. Compared to postimplant patients, ED patients reported greater importance in the areas of appearance (p=0.035), soft glans (p=0.040), and concealment of implant (p=0.007). Urologists ranked natural feel (p=0.019) and generating a discrete erection (p=0.022) as less important than patients.ConclusionsThis is the first study that examines which specific variables of penile implant surgery are associated with satisfaction while comparing surgeons' understanding of what patients desire from this surgery. This study identifies several factors deemed important by patients but under-recognized by urologists. This knowledge can aid urologists in optimizing preoperative counselling and improving patient satisfaction.
