Colloidal Palladium Nanoparticles for Selective Hydrogenation of Styrene Derivatives with Reactive Functional Groups.

ABSTRACT: This article presents the catalysis investigation of octanethiolate-capped palladium nanoparticles (C8 PdNP) and phenylethanethiolate-capped palladium nanoparticles (PhC2 PdNP) for chemoselective catalytic hydrogenation reactions of styrene derivatives in the presence of other reducible functionalities. The results show that the C8 PdNP is highly active under mild reaction conditions (room temperature and atmospheric pressure) and selective for hydrogenating monosubstituted alkene groups without reducing other reactive functional groups such as nitro, halo, carbonyls, and so forth. In comparison, the noncovalent interactions between surface phenyl ligands and aromatic substrates are found to hinder the hydrogenation activity of PhC2 PdNP.

Selective ensembles in supported palladium sulfide nanoparticles for alkyne semi-hydrogenation.

Project description:Ensemble control has been intensively pursued for decades to identify sustainable alternatives to the Lindlar catalyst (PdPb/CaCO3) applied for the partial hydrogenation of alkynes in industrial organic synthesis. Although the geometric and electronic requirements are known, a literature survey illustrates the difficulty of transferring this knowledge into an efficient and robust catalyst. Here, we report a simple treatment of palladium nanoparticles supported on graphitic carbon nitride with aqueous sodium sulfide, which directs the formation of a nanostructured Pd3S phase with controlled crystallographic orientation, exhibiting unparalleled performance in the semi-hydrogenation of alkynes in the liquid phase. The exceptional behavior is linked to the multifunctional role of sulfur. Apart from defining a structure integrating spatially-isolated palladium trimers, the active ensembles, the modifier imparts a bifunctional mechanism and weak binding of the organic intermediates. Similar metal trimers are also identified in Pd4S, evidencing the pervasiveness of these selective ensembles in supported palladium sulfides.

Photocatalytic Palladium-Catalyzed Fluoroalkylation of Styrene Derivatives.

Project description:A visible light induced palladium-catalyzed fluoroalkylation method was developed. The Heck-type alkyl coupling reaction enables the introduction of trifluoroethyl, difluoroethyl and other fluoroalkyl fragment into styrenes under mild reaction conditions without the use of additional photosensitizers and ensures access to fluoroalkylated olefins on a broad scale.

Alkanethiolate-capped palladium nanoparticles for selective catalytic hydrogenation of dienes and trienes.

Project description:Selective hydrogenation of dienes and trienes is an important process in the pharmaceutical and chemical industries. Our group previously reported that the thiosulfate protocol using a sodium S-alkylthiosulfate ligand could generate catalytically active Pd nanoparticles (PdNP) capped with a lower density of alkanethio-late ligands. This homogeneously soluble PdNP catalyst offers several advantages such as little contamination via Pd leaching and easy separation and recycling. In addition, the high activity of PdNP allows the reactions to be completed under mild conditions, at room temperature and atmospheric pressure. Herein, a PdNP catalyst capped with octanethiolate ligands (C8 PdNP) is investigated for the selective hydrogenation of conjugated dienes into monoenes. The strong influence of the thiolate ligands on the chemical and electronic properties of the Pd surface is confirmed by mechanistic studies and highly selective catalysis results. The studies also suggest two major routes for the conjugated diene hydrogenation: the 1,2-addition and 1,4-addition of hydrogen. The selectivity between two mono-hydrogenation products is controlled by the steric interaction of substrates and the thermodynamic stability of products. The catalytic hydrogenation of trienes also results in the almost quantitative formation of mono-hydrogenation products, the isolated dienes, from both ocimene and myrcene.

Synthesis and characterization of supported stabilized palladium nanoparticles for selective hydrogenation in water at low temperature.

Project description:Zirconia supported vacant phosphotungstate stabilized Pd nanoparticles (Pd-PW11/ZrO2) were prepared using a simple impregnation and post reduction method, characterized and their efficiency for selective C[double bond, length as m-dash]C hydrogenation of unsaturated compounds explored. The establishment of a hydrogenation strategy at low temperature using water as solvent under mild conditions makes the present system environmentally benign and green. The catalyst shows outstanding activity (96% conversion) with just a small amount of Pd(0) (0.0034 mol%) with high substrate/catalyst ratio (29 177/1), TON (28 010) and TOF (14 005 h-1) for cyclohexene (as a model substrate) hydrogenation. The catalyst was recovered by simple centrifugation and reused for up to five catalytic cycles without alteration in its activity. The present catalyst was found to be viable towards different substrates with excellent activity and TON (18 000 to 28 800). A study on the effect of addenda atom shows that the efficiency of the catalyst can be enhanced greatly by increasing the number of counter protons. This challenging strategy would greatly benefit sustainable development in chemistry as it diminishes the use of organic solvents and offers economic and environmental benefits as water is cheap and non-toxic.

Oxygen deficient Pr<sub>6</sub>O<sub>11</sub> nanorod supported palladium nanoparticles: highly active nanocatalysts for styrene and 4-nitrophenol hydrogenation reactions.

Project description:The design and development of highly efficient and long lifetime Pd-based catalysts for hydrogenation reactions have attracted significant research interest over the past few decades. Rational selection of supports for Pd loadings with strong metal-support interaction (SMSI) is beneficial for boosting catalytic activity and stability. In this context, we have developed a facile approach for uniformly immobilizing ultra-small Pd nanoparticles (NPs) with a clean surface on a Pr6O11 support by a hydrogen thermal reduction method. The hydrogenations of p-nitrophenol and styrene are used as model reactions to evaluate the catalytic efficiency. The results show highly efficient styrene hydrogenation performance under 1 atm H2 at room temperature with a TOF value as high as 8957.7 h-1, and the rate constant value of p-nitrophenol reduction is 0.0191 s-1. Strong metal-support interaction and good dispersion of Pd nanoparticles, as demonstrated by XPS and HRTEM results, contribute to the excellent hydrogenation performance. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) results suggest the presence of oxygen vacancies in the support, which serve as electron donors and enhance the adsorption and activation of reactants and subsequent conversion into products. Moreover, the catalyst can be recovered and reused up to 10 consecutive cycles without marked loss of activity. Overall, our results indicate that oxygen-deficient Pr6O11 nanorods (NRs) not only play a role as support but also work as the promoter to substantially boost the catalytic activities for organic transformations, therefore, providing a novel strategy to develop other high-performance nanostructured catalysts for environmental sustainability.

Alkanethiolate-Capped Palladium Nanoparticles for Regio- and Stereoselective Hydrogenation of Allenes.

Project description:Colloidal Pd nanoparticles capped with octanethiolate ligands have previously shown an excellent selectivity toward the mono-hydrogenation of both isolated and conjugated dienes to internal alkenes. This paper reports an efficient stereoselective mono-hydrogenation of cumulated dienes (allenes) to either Z or E olefinic isomers, depending on the substitution pattern around C=C bonds. Kinetic studies indicate that the reaction progresses through the hydrogenation of less hindered C=C bonds to produce internal Z olefinic isomers. In the cases of di-substitued olefinic products, this initial hydrogenation step is followed by the subsequent isomerization of Z to E isomers. In contrast, the slow isomerization of Z to E isomers for tri-substituted olefinic products results in the preservation of Z stereochemistry. The high selectivity of Pd nanoparticles averting an additional hydrogenation is steered from the controlled electronic and geometric properties of the Pd surface, which are the result of thiolate-induced partial poisoning and surface crowding, respectively. The high activity of colloidal Pd nanoparticle catalysts allows the reactions to be completed at room temperature and atmospheric pressure.

Robust Colloidal Synthesis of Palladium-Gold Alloy Nanoparticles for Hydrogen Sensing.

Project description:Metal nanoparticles are currently used in a variety of applications, ranging from life sciences to nanoelectronic devices to gas sensors. In particular, the use of palladium nanoparticles is gaining increasing attention due to their ability to catalyze the rapid dissociation of hydrogen, which leads to an excellent response in hydrogen-sensing applications. However, current palladium-nanoparticle-based sensors are hindered by the presence of hysteresis upon hydride formation and decomposition, as this hysteresis limits sensor accuracy. Here, we present a robust colloidal synthesis for palladium-gold alloy nanoparticles and demonstrate their hysteresis-free response when used for hydrogen detection. The obtained colloidal particles, synthesized in an aqueous, room-temperature environment, can be tailored to a variety of applications through changing the size, ratio of metals, and surface stabilization. In particular, the variation of the viscosity of the mixture during synthesis resulted in a highly tunable size distribution and contributed to a significant improvement in size dispersity compared to the state-of-the-art methods.

Selective porous gates made from colloidal silica nanoparticles.

Project description:Highly selective porous films were prepared by spin-coating deposition of colloidal silica nanoparticles on an appropriate macroporous substrate. Silica nanoparticles very homogenous in size were obtained by sol-gel reaction of a metal oxide silica precursor, tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS), and using polystyrene-block-poly(ethylene oxide) (PS-b-PEO) copolymers as soft-templating agents. Nanoparticles synthesis was carried out in a mixed solvent system. After spin-coating onto a macroporous silicon nitride support, silica nanoparticles were calcined under controlled conditions. An organized nanoporous layer was obtained characterized by a depth filter-like structure with internal porosity due to interparticle voids. Permeability and size-selectivity were studied by monitoring the diffusion of probe molecules under standard conditions and under the application of an external stimulus (i.e., electric field). Promising results were obtained, suggesting possible applications of these nanoporous films as selective gates for controlled transport of chemical species in solution.

Elucidating the Roles of Amorphous Alumina Overcoat in Palladium-Catalyzed Selective Hydrogenation.

Project description:Amorphous alumina overcoats generated by atomic layer deposition (ALD) have been shown to improve the selectivity and durability of supported metal catalysts in many reactions. Several mechanisms have been proposed to explain the enhanced catalytic performance, but the accessibilities of reactants through the amorphous overcoats remain elusive, which is crucial for understanding reaction mechanisms. Here, we show that an AlOx ALD overcoat is able to improve the alkene product selectivity of a supported Pd catalyst in acetylene (C2H2) hydrogenation. We further demonstrate that the AlOx ALD overcoat blocks the access of C2H2 (kinetic diameter of 0.33 nm), O2 (0.35 nm), and CO (0.38 nm) but allows H2 (0.29 nm) to access Pd surfaces. A H-D exchange experiment suggests that H2 might dissociate heterolytically at the Pd-AlOx interface. These findings are in favor of a hydrogen spillover mechanism.

3D printed colloidal biomaterials based on photo-reactive gelatin nanoparticles.

Project description:Biomaterials-based strategies have shown great promise for tissue regeneration. 3D printing technologies can deliver unprecedented control over architecture and properties of biomaterial constructs when combined with innovative material design strategies. Colloidal gels made of polymeric nanoparticles are attractive injectable and self-healing systems, but their use as bio-inks for extrusion-based printing is largely unexplored. Here, we report 3D printing of novel biomaterial constructs with shape memory behavior using photo-reactive gelatin nanoparticles as colloidal building blocks. These nanoparticles are stabilized with intraparticle covalent crosslinks, and also contain pendant methacryloyl groups as photo-reactive moieties. While non-covalent interactions between nanoparticles enable formation of colloidal gel inks that are printable at room temperature, UV-induced covalent interparticle crosslinks based on methacryloyl moieties significantly enhance mechanical properties of printed constructs. Additionally, the UV crosslinking modality enables remarkable control over swelling, degradation, and biomolecule release behavior of 3D constructs. Finally, by exploiting the mechanical properties of colloidal biomaterials after UV crosslinking, 3D constructs can be designed with shape memory properties, returning to their original programmed geometry upon re-hydration. Accordingly, these novel colloidal inks exhibit great potential to serve as bio-inks for 3D printing of biomaterials with shape-morphing features for a wide range of tissue engineering and regenerative medicine applications.
