Sarcocysts of various <i>Sarcocystis</i> spp. are highly prevalent in wild sika deer, <i>Cervus nippon yesoensis</i>, in Hokkaido, Japan, and four species have been identified based on morphological and molecular characteristics: <i>S. ovalis</i>, <i>S. pilosa</i>, <i>S. tarandi</i>-like, and <i>S. truncata</i>-like.
