Identification of differentially expressed genes in the endothelial precursor cells of patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus by bioinformatics analysis.

ABSTRACT: Type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM) is a metabolic disease with worldwide prevalence that is associated with a decrease in the number and function of endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs). The aim of the present study was to explore the potential hub genes of EPCs in patients with type 2 DM. Differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were screened from a public microarray dataset (accession no. GSE43950). Pathway and functional enrichment analyses were performed using the Database for Annotation, Visualization and Integrated Discovery. The protein-protein interaction (PPI) network was visualized. The most significantly clustered modules and hub genes were identified using Cytoscape. Furthermore, hub genes were validated by quantitative PCR analysis of EPCs isolated from diabetic and normal subjects. Su
