Rb3Na(H2C3N3O3)4·3H2O with Large Birefringence.

ABSTRACT: A mixed alkali-metal nonlinear optical (NLO) dihydro-cyanurate crystal Rb3Na(H2C3N3O3)4·3H2O has been synthesized via the hydrothermal method. Its calculated birefringence is about 0.368, which is very large, its ultraviolet (UV) cutoff edge is down to 230 nm, and the powder second harmonic generation (SHG) intensity is about 0.2 × KDP. In addition, a first-principles investigation of the electronic properties on Rb3Na(H2C3N3O3)4·3H2O was carried out. The calculated band gap and SHG coefficient values agree well with the experimental ones. These results suggest that it could be applied as a UV birefringent material.

Large second harmonic generation and birefringence from extended octupolar π-conjugated structures.

Project description:The exploration of crystal materials for optical manipulation by nonlinear optical (NLO) and anisotropic light-matter interaction is of paramount importance in modern science and technology. However, in such crystal materials, finding the right balance between second harmonic generation (SHG), birefringence, and the bandgap presents a significant challenge. In this contribution, we employ extended octupolar π-conjugated groups devoid of intrinsic dipole moments to construct melonate-based inorganic-organic hybrid crystals, thereby achieving simultaneous large optical nonlinearity and anisotropy. In accordance with this strategy, Rb3[C6N7(NCN)3]·3H2O (I) and Cs3[C6N7(NCN)3]·3H2O (II) were obtained and subjected to detailed investigation. Strong SHG responses of ∼9× KH2PO4 and a large birefringence of at least 0.6@546 nm were observed for I and II crystals, respectively, together with a suitable bandgap for visible-UV application. Theoretical calculations indicated that octupolar [C6N7(NCN)3]3- groups of I and II arranged in a near parallel configuration exhibit a discrete π electron distribution, resulting in enhanced NLO susceptibilities and maximal polarizability difference. This work underscores the potential of octupolar structures with extended π-conjugation as a promising avenue for the discovery of NLO and birefringence crystals.

Correlation between birefringence and absorption mapping in large-size Sapphire substrates for gravitational-wave interferometry.

Project description:In high-sensitive laser interferometers, such as the gravitational-wave detector KAGRA, ultra-high-quality mirrors are essential. In the case of KAGRA, where cavity mirrors are cooled down to 20 K, large-size Sapphire crystals are used as the substrate for the main mirrors to achieve both a good optical quality (i.e., low absorption and uniform refractive index) and optimized thermal behavior under cryogenic temperatures. To implement the very tight optical specifications required by this demanding application, it is mandatory to test the optical homogeneity of different substrates. In order to characterize refractive-index inhomogeneities of large-size uniaxial samples such as the KAGRA Sapphire test masses, we developed a dedicated setup, allowing to resolve birefringence changes with a sensitivity in the order of [Formula: see text] and a spatial resolution of [Formula: see text]. Moreover, the same setup allows us to simultaneously record residual absorption maps, thus allowing for a comparison between birefringence and absorption features. In this paper, we will present for the first time measurements on a KAGRA-sized Sapphire substrate which has been characterized in terms of absorption already in an earlier work. Both birefringence inhomogeneities and absorption distributions will be compared and correlations discussed.

Agardite-(Y), Cu(2+) 6Y(AsO4)3(OH)6·3H2O.

Project description:Agardite-(Y), with a refined formula of Cu(2+) 5.70(Y0.69Ca0.31)[(As0.83P0.17)O4]3(OH)6·3H2O [ideally Cu(2+) 6Y(AsO4)3(OH)6·3H2O, hexa-copper(II) yttrium tris-(arsenate) hexa-hydroxide trihydrate], belongs to the mixite mineral group which is characterized by the general formula Cu(2+) 6 A(TO4)3(OH)6·3H2O, where nine-coordinated cations in the A-site include rare earth elements along with Al, Ca, Pb, or Bi, and the T-site contains P or As. This study presents the first structure determination of agardite-(Y). It is based on the single-crystal X-ray diffraction of a natural sample from Jote West mine, Pampa Larga Mining District, Copiapo, Chile. The general structural feature of agardite-(Y) is characterized by infinite chains of edge-sharing CuO5 square pyramids (site symmetry 1) extending down the c axis, connected in the ab plane by edge-sharing YO9 polyhedra (site symmetry -6..) and corner-sharing AsO4 tetra-hedra (site symmetry m..). Hy-droxyl groups occupy each corner of the CuO5-square pyramids not shared by a neighboring As or Y atom. Each YO9 polyhedron is surrounded by three tubular channels. The walls of the channels, parallel to the c axis, are six-membered hexa-gonal rings comprised of CuO5 and AsO4 polyhedra in a 2:1 ratio, and contain free mol-ecules of lattice water.

Crystal structures of ZnCl2·2.5H2O, ZnCl2·3H2O and ZnCl2·4.5H2O.

Project description:The formation of different complexes in aqueous solutions is an important step in understanding the behavior of zinc chloride in water. The structure of concentrated ZnCl2 solutions is governed by coordination competition of Cl(-) and H2O around Zn(2+). According to the solid-liquid phase diagram, the title compounds were crystallized below room temperature. The structure of ZnCl2·2.5H2O contains Zn(2+) both in a tetra-hedral coordination with Cl(-) and in an octa-hedral environment defined by five water mol-ecules and one Cl(-) shared with the [ZnCl4](2-) unit. Thus, these two different types of Zn(2+) cations form isolated units with composition [Zn2Cl4(H2O)5] (penta-aqua-μ-chlorido-tri-chlorido-di-zinc). The trihydrate {hexa-aqua-zinc tetra-chlorido-zinc, [Zn(H2O)6][ZnCl4]}, consists of three different Zn(2+) cations, one of which is tetra-hedrally coordinated by four Cl(-) anions. The two other Zn(2+) cations are each located on an inversion centre and are octa-hedrally surrounded by water mol-ecules. The [ZnCl4] tetra-hedra and [Zn(H2O)6] octa-hedra are arranged in alternating rows parallel to [001]. The structure of the 4.5-hydrate {hexa-aqua-zinc tetra-chlorido-zinc trihydrate, [Zn(H2O)6][ZnCl4]·3H2O}, consists of isolated octa-hedral [Zn(H2O)6] and tetra-hedral [ZnCl4] units, as well as additional lattice water mol-ecules. O-H⋯O hydrogen bonds between the water mol-ecules as donor and ZnCl4 tetra-hedra and water mol-ecules as acceptor groups leads to the formation of a three-dimensional network in each of the three structures.

Ferroelectric Nematic Liquid Crystals Showing High Birefringence.

Project description:High birefringence nematic liquid crystals are particularly demanded for adaptive optics applications in the infrared spectrum because it enable a thinner cell gap for achieving fast response time and improved diffraction efficiency. The emerging ferroelectric nematic liquid crystals have attracted widespread interest in soft matter due to their unique combination of ferroelectricity and fluidity. However, the birefringence, which is one of the most important optical parameters in electro-optic devices, is not large enough (<0.25) in most ferroelectric nematic materials. Here, a polar liquid crystal molecule library containing more than 60 molecules with a highly rigid and fluorinated nature is developed. The introduction of triple bonds constructs a long π-electron conjugated mesogen skeleton, significantly improving the birefringence of polar liquid crystal phases. The birefringence and dispersion properties are systematically studied, demonstrating a strong dependence on chemical structures and the type of polar phases. Furthermore, through multi-component mixing, polar liquid crystal mixtures with ultra-wide temperature range and excellent stability at or near room temperature are obtained. They possess much higher birefringence than the existing ferroelectric liquid crystal materials. The unique combination of high birefringence and fluidic ferroelectricity is expected to promote the application of polar liquid crystals in electro-optic technologies.

Time Circular Birefringence in Time-Dependent Magnetoelectric Media.

Project description:Light traveling in time-dependent media has many extraordinary properties which can be utilized to convert frequency, achieve temporal cloaking, and simulate cosmological phenomena. In this paper, we focus on time-dependent axion-type magnetoelectric (ME) media, and prove that light in these media always has two degenerate modes with opposite circular polarizations corresponding to one wave vector , and name this effect "time circular birefringence" (TCB). By interchanging the status of space and time, the pair of TCB modes can appear simultaneously via "time refraction" and "time reflection" of a linear polarized incident wave at a time interface of ME media. The superposition of the two TCB modes causes the "time Faraday effect", namely the globally unified polarization axes rotate with time. A circularly polarized Gaussian pulse traversing a time interface is also studied. If the wave-vector spectrum of a pulse mainly concentrates in the non-traveling-wave band, the pulse will be trapped with nearly fixed center while its intensity will grow rapidly. In addition, we propose an experimental scheme of using molecular fluid with external time-varying electric and magnetic fields both parallel to the direction of light to realize these phenomena in practice.

Giant ultrafast dichroism and birefringence with active nonlocal metasurfaces.

Project description:Switching of light polarization on the sub-picosecond timescale is a crucial functionality for applications in a variety of contexts, including telecommunications, biology and chemistry. The ability to control polarization at ultrafast speed would pave the way for the development of unprecedented free-space optical links and of novel techniques for probing dynamical processes in complex systems, as chiral molecules. Such high switching speeds can only be reached with an all-optical paradigm, i.e., engineering active platforms capable of controlling light polarization via ultrashort laser pulses. Here we demonstrate giant modulation of dichroism and birefringence in an all-dielectric metasurface, achieved at low fluences of the optical control beam. This performance, which leverages the many degrees of freedom offered by all-dielectric active metasurfaces, is obtained by combining a high-quality factor nonlocal resonance with the giant third-order optical nonlinearity dictated by photogenerated hot carriers at the semiconductor band edge.

Full-range birefringence control with piezoelectric MEMS-based metasurfaces.

Project description:Dynamic polarization control is crucial for emerging highly integrated photonic systems with diverse metasurfaces being explored for its realization, but efficient, fast, and broadband operation remains a cumbersome challenge. While efficient optical metasurfaces (OMSs) involving liquid crystals suffer from inherently slow responses, other OMS realizations are limited either in the operating wavelength range (due to resonances involved) or in the range of birefringence tuning. Capitalizing on our development of piezoelectric micro-electro-mechanical system (MEMS) based dynamic OMSs, we demonstrate reflective MEMS-OMS dynamic wave plates (DWPs) with high polarization conversion efficiencies (∼75%), broadband operation (∼100 nm near the operating wavelength of 800 nm), fast responses (<0.4 milliseconds) and full-range birefringence control that enables completely encircling the Poincaré sphere along trajectories determined by the incident light polarization and DWP orientation. Demonstrated complete electrical control over light polarization opens new avenues in further integration and miniaturization of optical networks and systems.

Crystal clear: unveiling giant birefringence in organic-inorganic cocrystals.

Project description:Coplanar groups with large anisotropic polarizability are suitable as birefringence-active groups for investigating compounds with significant birefringence. In this study, the organic coplanar raw reagent, o-C5H5NO (4HP), was selected as an individual complement. Utilizing the cocrystal engineering strategy, we successfully designed two cocrystals: [LiNO3·H2O·4HP]·4HP (Li-4HP2) and [Mg(NO3)2·6H2O]·(4HP)2 (Mg-4HP), and one by-product: LiNO3·H2O·4HP (Li-4HP), which were grown using a mild aqua-solution method. The synergy of the coplanar groups of NO3 - and 4HP in the structures resulted in unexpectedly large birefringence values of 0.376-0.522@546 nm. Furthermore, the compounds exhibit large bandgaps (4.08-4.51 eV), short UV cutoff edges (275-278 nm), and favorable growth habits, suggesting their potential as short-wave UV birefringent materials.

Crystal structures of Sr(ClO4)2·3H2O, Sr(ClO4)2·4H2O and Sr(ClO4)2·9H2O.

Project description:The title compounds, strontium perchlorate trihydrate {di-μ-aqua-aquadi-μ-perchlorato-strontium, [Sr(ClO4)2(H2O)3] n }, strontium perchlorate tetra-hydrate {di-μ-aqua-bis-(tri-aqua-diperchloratostrontium), [Sr2(ClO4)4(H2O)8]} and strontium perchlorate nona-hydrate {hepta-aqua-diperchloratostrontium dihydrate, [Sr(ClO4)2(H2O)7]·2H2O}, were crystallized at low temperatures according to the solid-liquid phase diagram. The structures of the tri- and tetra-hydrate consist of Sr(2+) cations coordinated by five water mol-ecules and four O atoms of four perchlorate tetra-hedra in a distorted tricapped trigonal-prismatic coordination mode. The asymmetric unit of the trihydrate contains two formula units. Two [SrO9] polyhedra in the trihydrate are connected by sharing water mol-ecules and thus forming chains parallel to [100]. In the tetra-hydrate, dimers of two [SrO9] polyhedra connected by two sharing water mol-ecules are formed. The structure of the nona-hydrate contains one Sr(2+) cation coordinated by seven water mol-ecules and by two O atoms of two perchlorate tetra-hedra (point group symmetry ..m), forming a tricapped trigonal prism (point group symmetry m2m). The structure contains additional non-coordinating water mol-ecules, which are located on twofold rotation axes. O-H⋯O hydrogen bonds between the water mol-ecules as donor and ClO4 tetra-hedra and water mol-ecules as acceptor groups lead to the formation of a three-dimensional network in each of the three structures.
