Holographic Sampling Display Based on Metagratings.

ABSTRACT: Glasses-free three-dimensional (3D) display is considered as a potential disruptive technology for display. The issue of visual fatigue, mainly caused by the inaccurate phase reconstruction in terms of image crosstalk, as well as vergence and accommodation conflict, is the critical obstacle that hinders the real applications of glasses-free 3D display. Here we propose a glasses-free 3D display by adopting metagratings for the pixelated phase modulation to form converged viewpoints. When the viewpoints are closely arranged, the holographic sampling 3D display can approximate a continuous light field. We demonstrate a video rate full-color 3D display prototype without visual fatigue under an LED white light illumination. The metagratings-based holographic sampling 3D display has a thin form factor and is compatible with traditional flat panel and thus has the potential to be used in portable electronics, window display, exhibition display, 3D TV, as well as tabletop display.

Interactive Holographic Display Based on Finger Gestures.

Project description:In this paper, we demonstrate an interactive, finger-sensitive system which enables an observer to intuitively handle electro-holographic images in real time. In this system, a motion sensor detects finger gestures (swiping and pinching) and translates them into the rotation and enlargement/reduction of the holographic image, respectively. By parallelising the hologram calculation using a graphics processing unit, we realised the interactive handling of the holographic image in real time. In a demonstration of the system, we used a Leap Motion sensor and a phase modulation-type spatial light modulator with 1,920 × 1,080 pixels and a pixel pitch of 8.0 µm × 8.0 µm. The constructed interactive finger-sensitive system was able to rotate a holographic image composed of 4,096 point light sources using a swiping gesture and enlarge or reduce it using a pinching gesture in real time. The average calculation speed was 27.6 ms per hologram. Finally, we extended the constructed system to a full-colour reconstruction system that generates a more realistic three-dimensional image. The extended system successfully allowed the handling of a full-colour holographic image composed of 1,709 point light sources with a calculation speed of 22.6 ms per hologram.

Slim-panel holographic video display.

Project description:Since its discovery almost 70 years ago, the hologram has been considered to reproduce the most realistic three dimensional images without visual side effects. Holographic video has been extensively researched for commercialization, since Benton et al. at MIT Media Lab developed the first holographic video systems in 1990. However, commercially available holographic video displays have not been introduced yet for several reasons: narrow viewing angle, bulky optics and heavy computing power. Here we present an interactive slim-panel holographic video display using a steering-backlight unit and a holographic video processor to solve the above issues. The steering-backlight unit enables to expand the viewing angle by 30 times and its diffractive waveguide architecture makes a slim display form-factor. The holographic video processor computes high quality holograms in real-time on a single-chip. We suggest that the slim-panel holographic display can provide realistic three-dimensional video in office and household environments.

Multichannel vectorial holographic display and encryption.

Project description:Since its invention, holography has emerged as a powerful tool to fully reconstruct the wavefronts of light including all the fundamental properties (amplitude, phase, polarization, wave vector, and frequency). For exploring the full capability for information storage/display and enhancing the encryption security of metasurface holograms, smart multiplexing techniques together with suitable metasurface designs are highly demanded. Here, we integrate multiple polarization manipulation channels for various spatial phase profiles into a single birefringent vectorial hologram by completely avoiding unwanted cross-talk. Multiple independent target phase profiles with quantified phase relations that can process significantly different information in different polarization states are realized within a single metasurface. For our metasurface holograms, we demonstrate high fidelity, large efficiency, broadband operation, and a total of twelve polarization channels. Such multichannel polarization multiplexing can be used for dynamic vectorial holographic display and can provide triple protection for optical security. The concept is appealing for applications of arbitrary spin to angular momentum conversion and various phase modulation/beam shaping elements.

Colour volumetric display based on holographic-laser-excited graphics using drawing space separation.

Project description:A volumetric display generates a graphics that can be viewed from 360[Formula: see text] by representing the 3D information of an object as voxels in physical space. However, the natural properties of physical objects, such as 3D information and colors, and the seamless relationships between graphics and humans make it difficult to implement such displays. Here, we introduce a novel system that combines the spatial generation of femtosecond-laser-excited emission points using computer-generated holograms and beam scanning with the drawing space separation method. We demonstrate the drawing of volumetric graphics that can be color-expressed in voxel units in the air. This system enables the drawing of volumetric graphics in the air, accurate color representations, and robust graphics that are not destroyed by contact with users or objects. It also lays the foundation for the implementation of future volumetric displays.

Color multilayer holographic near-eye augmented reality display.

Project description:This study demonstrates a full-color near-eye holographic display capable of superimposing color virtual scenes with 2D, 3D, and multiple objects with extended depth upon a real scene, which also has the ability to present different 3D information depending on the focus of the user's eyes using a single computer-generated hologram per color channel. Our setup makes use of a hologram generation method based on two-step propagation and the singular value decomposition of the Fresnel transform impulse response function to efficiently generate the holograms of the target scene. Then, we test our proposal by implementing a holographic display that makes use of a phase-only spatial light modulator and time-division multiplexing for color reproduction. We demonstrate the superior quality and computation speed of this approach compared with other hologram generation techniques with both numerical and experimental results.

Projection-type see-through holographic three-dimensional display.

Project description:Owing to the limited spatio-temporal resolution of display devices, dynamic holographic three-dimensional displays suffer from a critical trade-off between the display size and the visual angle. Here we show a projection-type holographic three-dimensional display, in which a digitally designed holographic optical element and a digital holographic projection technique are combined to increase both factors at the same time. In the experiment, the enlarged holographic image, which is twice as large as the original display device, projected on the screen of the digitally designed holographic optical element was concentrated at the target observation area so as to increase the visual angle, which is six times as large as that for a general holographic display. Because the display size and the visual angle can be designed independently, the proposed system will accelerate the adoption of holographic three-dimensional displays in industrial applications, such as digital signage, in-car head-up displays, smart-glasses and head-mounted displays.

Holographic Recording Performance of Acrylate-Based Photopolymer under Different Preparation Conditions for Waveguide Display.

Project description:This work proposes a green light-sensitive acrylate-based photopolymer. The effects of the preparation conditions for the waveguide applied volume holographic gratings (VHGs) were experimentally investigated. The optimum preparation conditions for holographic recording were revealed. After optimization, the peak of VHG diffraction efficiency reached 99%, the diffractive wavelength bandwidth increased from 13 nm to 22 nm, and the corresponding RIM was 0.06. To prove the wide application prospect of the acrylate-based photopolymer in head-mounted augmented reality (AR) displays, green monochromatic volume holographic waveguides were fabricated. The display results showed that the prototype was able to achieve a 28° diagonal FOV and possessed a system luminance of 300 cd/m2.

Color liquid crystal grating based color holographic 3D display system with large viewing angle.

Project description:Holographic 3D display is highly desirable for numerous applications ranging from medical treatments to military affairs. However, it is challenging to simultaneously achieve large viewing angle and high-fidelity color reconstruction due to the intractable constraints of existing technology. Here, we conceptually propose and experimentally demonstrate a simple and feasible pathway of using a well-designed color liquid crystal grating to overcome the inevitable chromatic aberration and enlarge the holographic viewing angle, thus enabling large-viewing-angle and color holographic 3D display. The use of color liquid crystal grating allows performing secondary diffraction modulation on red, green and blue reproduced images simultaneously and extending the viewing angle in the holographic 3D display system. In principle, a chromatic aberration-free hologram generation mechanism in combination with the color liquid crystal grating is proposed to pave the way for on such a superior holographic 3D display. The proposed system shows a color viewing angle of ~50.12°, which is about 7 times that of the traditional system with a single spatial light modulator. This work presents a paradigm for achieving desirable holographic 3D display, and is expected to provide a new way for the wide application of holographic display.

Parallel wave-based analog computing using metagratings.

Project description:Wave-based signal processing has witnessed a significant expansion of interest in a variety of science and engineering disciplines, as it provides new opportunities for achieving high-speed and low-power operations. Although flat optics desires integrable components to perform multiple missions, yet, the current wave-based computational metasurfaces can engineer only the spatial content of the input signal where the processed signal obeys the traditional version of Snell's law. In this paper, we propose a multi-functional metagrating to modulate both spatial and angular properties of the input signal whereby both symmetric and asymmetric optical transfer functions are realized using high-order space harmonics. The performance of the designed compound metallic grating is validated through several investigations where closed-form expressions are suggested to extract the phase and amplitude information of the diffractive modes. Several illustrative examples are demonstrated to show that the proposed metagrating allows for simultaneous parallel analog computing tasks such as first- and second-order spatial differentiation through a single multichannel structured surface. It is anticipated that the designed platform brings a new twist to the field of optical signal processing and opens up large perspectives for simple integrated image processing systems.

Tunable liquid crystal grating based holographic 3D display system with wide viewing angle and large size.

Project description:As one of the most ideal display approaches, holographic 3-dimensional (3D) display has always been a research hotspot since the holographic images reproduced in such system are very similar to what humans see the actual environment. However, current holographic 3D displays suffer from critical bottlenecks of narrow viewing angle and small size. Here, we propose a tunable liquid crystal grating-based holographic 3D display system with wide viewing angle and large size. Our tunable liquid crystal grating, providing an adjustable period and the secondary diffraction of the reconstructed image, enables to simultaneously implement two different hologram generation methods in achieving wide viewing angle and enlarged size, respectively. By using the secondary diffraction mechanism of the tunable liquid crystal grating, the proposed system breaks through the limitations of narrow viewing angle and small size of holographic 3D display. The proposed system shows a viewing angle of 57.4°, which is nearly 7 times of the conventional case with a single spatial light modulator, and the size of the reconstructed image is enlarged by about 4.2. The proposed system will have wide applications in medical diagnosis, advertising, education and entertainment and other fields.
