Notes on the genus Gastrochilus (Orchidaceae) in Myanmar.

ABSTRACT: Myanmar is known for its high species richness of genus Gastrochilus; however, most of them lack proper information for taxonomic revision. During four years of field investigation in Myanmar, two new distributional records were encountered, namely, G. arunachalensis and G. corymbosus and one species, i.e. G. pechei was rediscovered after its original description. The three species were not easy to interpret from the available original descriptions and types due to severely shrunk or poorly preserved specimens. Therefore, we hereby present more detailed illustrations and updated descriptions for these species, based on freshly collected materials.

The chloroplast genome of an Endangered orchid species, Gastrochilus calceolaris (Orchidaceae: Aeridinae).

Project description:This study reported the complete chloroplast genome of a critically Endangered Orchidaceae species Gastrochilus calceolaris and its phylogenetic position in subtribe Aeridinae based on 12 orchid species plastomes. The plastome of G. calceolaris, with a 148,428 bp size, consisted of a pair of inverted repeat regions of 25,950 bp, a small single copy region of 11,139 bp, and a large single copy region of 85,389 bp. G + C content was 36.8%. The phylogenetic analysis highly supported the sisterhood between Gastrochilus and Pelatantheria and a monophyletic Gastrochilus group comprising of G. calceolaris, G. fuscopunctatus, and G. japonicus.

Validation of Gastrochilus prionophyllus (Vandeae, Orchidaceae), a new species from Yunnan Province, China.

Project description:Gastrochilus prionophyllus, which was previously not validly published, is here validated. The species is described along with illustration and photos. Morphologically, the long and pendulous stem and distichous leaves of this new species indicate that it belongs to the sect. Microphyllae. It is unique in having thick fleshy leaves and margin significantly serrate, small flowers, reniform epichile and margin with dentations, thickened cushion on the central epichile and subconic hypochile. Meanwhile, a preliminary conservation status assessment according to IUCN Red List categories and criteria is given to the new species.

A new infrageneric classification of Gastrochilus (Orchidaceae: Epidendroideae) based on molecular and morphological data.

Project description:Gastrochilus is an orchid genus containing 73 species of mainly epiphytic on trees or rocks in mountain forests of tropical and subtropical Asia. Previous phylogenetic analyses and morphological assessments have failed to produce a well-resolved phylogeny at the infrageneric level. In the present study, a new infrageneric classification of Gastrochilus is proposed based on thoroughly morphological and phylogenetic analyses based on 52 species. Our phylogenetic analysis divided the genus into six sections including three new sections, G. sect. Pseudodistichi, G. sect. Brachycaules and G. sect. Acinacifolii. We also reinstate G. suavis to the specific rank. Furthermore, two new species, G. armeniacus Jun Y. Zhang, B. Xu & Yue H. Cheng and G. minjiangensis Jun Y. Zhang, B. Xu & Yue H. Cheng, are described and illustrated. A key to six sections of the genus is presented.

Gastrodia kachinensis (Orchidaceae), a new species from Myanmar.

Project description:Gastrodia kachinensis, a new species of Orchidaceae, is described and illustrated from Putao, Kachin State, Myanmar. It is morphologically similar to G. gracilis, presumably its nearest relative, but can be easily distinguished from the latter by having perianth tube with punctate outer surface, verrucose outer surface of sepal lobe, orbicular petals, ovate-elliptic lip with truncate apex and auriculate-clawed base, glabrous lip apex with a pair of twin protuberance-like lamellae and column with a pair of blade-like lateral wings and acute stelidia at apex. Identification key and colour photographs are provided. A preliminary risk-of-extinction assessment, according to the IUCN Red List Categories and Criteria, is given for the new species.

Coelogyne magnifica (Orchidaceae), a new species from northern Myanmar.

Project description:Coelogyne magnifica (Orchidaceae), a new species from Putao, Kachin State, Myanmar, is described and illustrated. It belongs to Coelogyne section Ocellatae Pfitzer & Kraenzl. and it is morphologically similar to Coelogyne corymbosa and C. taronensis, but can be distinguished from these species by its larger flowers, lanceolate sepals and petals, a narrowly ovate lip, which has two bright yellow patches surrounded by shiny brownish red and two fimbriate or erose-lacerate lateral keels on the lip. The major differences between these species are outlined and discussed.

Characterization of the complete chloroplast genome of Gastrochilus sinensis (Orchidaceae, Epidendroideae), a beautiful epiphytic orchid from China.

Project description:Gastrochilus sinensis is a beautiful epiphytic orchid with high ornamental value. In this study, the first complete chloroplast genome sequence of G. sinensis was determined using next-generation sequencing (NGS). The de novo assembled chloroplast genome was 148,020 bp in length, including a pair of inverted repeat regions (IRs; 25,987 bp), a small single-copy region (SSC; 11,045 bp), and a large single-copy region (LSC; 85,001 bp). The chloroplast genome encodes 109 unique genes, including 75 protein-coding genes (PCGs), 30 tRNA genes, and four rRNA genes. The total GC content of the chloroplast genome was 36.8%. The phylogenetic analysis showed a close relationship between G. sinensis and G. formosanus species. The complete chloroplast genome provides fundamental information for genetic diversity and phylogenetic relationships in Gastrochilus.

Dendrobium naungmungense (Orchidaceae, Dendrobieae), a new species from Kachin State, Myanmar.

Project description:Dendrobium naungmungense, a new species from Naungmung, Kachin State, North Myanmar, is described and illustrated. It is morphologically similar to D. ciliatilabellum and D. vexabile, but the epichile is oblong with three long-ciliate laminae and the column wing has significant denticulation. A preliminary risk-of-extinction assessment shows that the new species should be regarded as Critically Endangered (CR) according to the IUCN Red List Categories and Criteria.

Odontochilus putaoensis (Cranichideae, Orchidaceae), a new species from Myanmar.

Project description:Odontochilus putaoensis, a new species of Orchidaceae, is described and illustrated from Putao Township, Kachin State, Myanmar. Odontochilus putaoensis is close to O. duplex, but can be easily distinguished from the latter by having a light yellow lip, a bisaccate hypochile with a small, erect, blade-like and emarginate callus within each sac, a mesochile with a pair of dentate-pectinate flanges and a bilobed epichile with a pair of widely diverging lobes that are erect and concave. An identification key to the Southeast Asian species of Odontochilus and colour photographs of O. putaoensis are provided. A preliminary conservation assessment according to the IUCN Red List Categories and Criteria is given for the new species.

Re-establishment of the genus Ania Lindl. (Orchidaceae).

Project description:Ania Lindl. is a small genus of the tribe Collabieae subtribe Collabiinae (Orchidaceae). For the last 150 years, it has generally been treated as a synonym of Tainia Blume. In this study, we critically re-examined morphological characters that have been used to distinguish Ania from Tainia, and assessed the phylogeny of Tainia using morphological and palynological characters. Sequences of the nuclear ribosomal ITS, chloroplast trnL intron and combined DNA data sets were analysed to clarify the delimitation and the phylogeny of these groups. The morphological and palynological survey revealed a number of useful diagnostic characters which permit a clear definition of Ania, after the exclusion of a single taxonomically questionable species. Results confirmed that Ania is distinct from Tainia. Phylogenetic reconstructions based on molecular data provided the greatest resolution and produced a morphologically well differentiated clade of Ania. In addition to morphological and suggested palynological characters, the phylogenies were also supported by karyological evidence. Our results support the independent generic status of Ania. The genus name Ania is revived and re-established.
