Understanding the friction of atomically thin layered materials.

ABSTRACT: Friction is a ubiquitous phenomenon that greatly affects our everyday lives and is responsible for large amounts of energy loss in industrialised societies. Layered materials such as graphene have interesting frictional properties and are often used as (additives to) lubricants to reduce friction and protect against wear. Experimental Atomic Force Microscopy studies and detailed simulations have shown a number of intriguing effects such as frictional strengthening and dependence of friction on the number of layers covering a surface. Here, we propose a simple, fundamental, model for friction on thin sheets. We use our model to explain a variety of seemingly contradictory experimental as well as numerical results. This model can serve as a basis for understanding friction on thin sheets, and opens up new possibilities for ultimately controlling their friction and wear protection.

Nanoscale Probing of Interaction in Atomically Thin Layered Materials.

Project description:We combine conductive atomic force microscopy (CAFM) and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations to reveal the interaction of atomically thin layered materials (ATLMs) down to nanoscale lateral dimension. The setup also allows quantifying, for the first time, the effect of layer number and electric field on the dielectric constant of ATLMs with few-layer down to monolayer thickness. Our CAFM-assisted electrostatic technique shows that high-quality mono- and bilayer graphene is reliably produced at significant yields only by the shear type of bond breaking between layers, whereas the normal type of bond breaking exhibits a very stochastic process mainly due to the coexistence of local delamination and interlayer twist. Our dielectric constant measurements also reveal a very weak dependence on the layer number and the electric field (up to our experimental limit of 0.1 V/Å), which is in contrast with theoretical reports. Owing to unexpectedly large variations in the screening ability of pristine monolayer graphene under ambient conditions, we further demonstrate that the effective dielectric constant of monolayer graphene can be engineered to provide a broad spectrum of dielectric responses (3.5-17) through oxidation and thermal annealing, thus confirming its much higher chemical reactivity than bilayer and few layers.

Probing interlayer shear thermal deformation in atomically-thin van der Waals layered materials.

Project description:Atomically-thin van der Waals layered materials, with both high in-plane stiffness and bending flexibility, offer a unique platform for thermomechanical engineering. However, the lack of effective characterization techniques hinders the development of this research topic. Here, we develop a direct experimental method and effective theoretical model to study the mechanical, thermal, and interlayer properties of van der Waals materials. This is accomplished by using a carefully designed WSe2-based heterostructure, where monolayer WSe2 serves as an in-situ strain meter. Combining experimental results and theoretical modelling, we are able to resolve the shear deformation and interlayer shear thermal deformation of each individual layer quantitatively in van der Waals materials. Our approach also provides important interlayer coupling information as well as key thermal parameters. The model can be applied to van der Waals materials with different layer numbers and various boundary conditions for both thermally-induced and mechanically-induced deformations.

Reversible and controllable reduction in friction of atomically thin two-dimensional materials through high-stress pre-rubbing.

Project description:Great efforts have been made to further reduce friction of atomically thin two-dimensional (2D) materials as solid lubricants due to their exceptional tribological properties and mechanical strength. In this work, the friction of atomically thin graphene is extensively and controllably reduced through pre-rubbing under high stress, resulting in a reduction of the friction coefficient by up to a factor of six compared to the pristine graphene. Also, this reduction can be reversed by reciprocating friction under moderate stress. Furthermore, high-stress pre-rubbing allows for patterning intentionally lubricating features on atomically thin graphene, such as nanometer-sized letters. This reduction in friction is attributed to the decreased sliding potential barrier yet increased contact stiffness, induced by the enhanced strength of graphene adhesion to the substrate due to interfacial charge transfer, as revealed by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. These findings present a practical methodology for optimizing and controlling the performance of 2D materials.

Topological phase singularities in atomically thin high-refractive-index materials.

Project description:Atomically thin transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) present a promising platform for numerous photonic applications due to excitonic spectral features, possibility to tune their constants by external gating, doping, or light, and mechanical stability. Utilization of such materials for sensing or optical modulation purposes would require a clever optical design, as by itself the 2D materials can offer only a small optical phase delay - consequence of the atomic thickness. To address this issue, we combine films of 2D semiconductors which exhibit excitonic lines with the Fabry-Perot resonators of the standard commercial SiO2/Si substrate, in order to realize topological phase singularities in reflection. Around these singularities, reflection spectra demonstrate rapid phase changes while the structure behaves as a perfect absorber. Furthermore, we demonstrate that such topological phase singularities are ubiquitous for the entire class of atomically thin TMDCs and other high-refractive-index materials, making it a powerful tool for phase engineering in flat optics. As a practical demonstration, we employ PdSe2 topological phase singularities for a refractive index sensor and demonstrate its superior phase sensitivity compared to typical surface plasmon resonance sensors.

Identification and Structural Characterization of Twisted Atomically Thin Bilayer Materials by Deep Learning.

Project description:Two-dimensional materials are expected to play an important role in next-generation electronics and optoelectronic devices. Recently, twisted bilayer graphene and transition metal dichalcogenides have attracted significant attention due to their unique physical properties and potential applications. In this study, we describe the use of optical microscopy to collect the color space of chemical vapor deposition (CVD) of molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) and the application of a semantic segmentation convolutional neural network (CNN) to accurately and rapidly identify thicknesses of MoS2 flakes. A second CNN model is trained to provide precise predictions on the twist angle of CVD-grown bilayer flakes. This model harnessed a data set comprising over 10,000 synthetic images, encompassing geometries spanning from hexagonal to triangular shapes. Subsequent validation of the deep learning predictions on twist angles was executed through the second harmonic generation and Raman spectroscopy. Our results introduce a scalable methodology for automated inspection of twisted atomically thin CVD-grown bilayers.

Neuromorphic Electro-Stimulation Based on Atomically Thin Semiconductor for Damage-Free Inflammation Inhibition

Project description:Inflammation, caused by accumulation of inflammatory cytokines from immunocytes, is prevalent in a variety of diseases. Electro-stimulation emerges as a promising candidate for inflammatory inhibition. Although electroacupuncture is free from surgical injury, it faces the challenges of imprecise pathways/current spikes, and insufficiently defined mechanisms, while non-optimal pathway or spike would require high current amplitude, which makes electro-stimulation usually accompanied by damage and complications. Here, we propose a neuromorphic electro-stimulation based on atomically thin semiconductor floating-gate memory interdigital circuit. Direct stimulation is achieved by wrapping sympathetic chain with flexible electrodes and floating-gate memory are programmable to fire bionic spikes, thus minimizing nerve damage. A substantial decrease (73.5%) in inflammatory cytokine IL-6 occurred, which also enabled better efficacy than commercial stimulator at record-low currents with damage-free to sympathetic neurons. Additionally, using transgenic mice, the anti-inflammation effect is determined by β2 adrenergic signaling from myeloid cell lineage (monocytes/macrophages and granulocytes).

Atomically thin nonreciprocal optical isolation.

Project description:Optical isolators will play a critical role in next-generation photonic circuits, but their on-chip integration requires miniaturization with suitable nonreciprocal photonic materials. Here, we theoretically demonstrate the thinnest possible and polarization-selective nonreciprocal isolation for circularly polarized waves by using graphene monolayer under an external magnetic field. The underlying mechanism is that graphene electron velocity can be largely different for the incident wave propagating in opposite directions at cyclotron frequency, making graphene highly conductive and reflective in one propagation direction while transparent in the opposite propagation direction under an external magnetic field. When some practical loss is introduced, nonreciprocal isolation with graphene monolayer still possesses good performance in a broad bandwidth. Our work shows the first study on the extreme limit of thickness for optical isolation and provides theoretical guidance in future practical applications.

Enhanced superconductivity in atomically thin TaS2.

Project description:The ability to exfoliate layered materials down to the single layer limit has presented the opportunity to understand how a gradual reduction in dimensionality affects the properties of bulk materials. Here we use this top-down approach to address the problem of superconductivity in the two-dimensional limit. The transport properties of electronic devices based on 2H tantalum disulfide flakes of different thicknesses are presented. We observe that superconductivity persists down to the thinnest layer investigated (3.5 nm), and interestingly, we find a pronounced enhancement in the critical temperature from 0.5 to 2.2 K as the layers are thinned down. In addition, we propose a tight-binding model, which allows us to attribute this phenomenon to an enhancement of the effective electron-phonon coupling constant. This work provides evidence that reducing the dimensionality can strengthen superconductivity as opposed to the weakening effect that has been reported in other 2D materials so far.

Atomically thin optical lenses and gratings.

Project description:Two-dimensional (2D) materials have emerged as promising candidates for miniaturized optoelectronic devices due to their strong inelastic interactions with light. On the other hand, a miniaturized optical system also requires strong elastic light-matter interactions to control the flow of light. Here we report that a single-layer molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) has a giant optical path length (OPL), around one order of magnitude larger than that from a single-layer of graphene. Using such giant OPL to engineer the phase front of optical beams we have demonstrated, to the best of our knowledge, the world's thinnest optical lens consisting of a few layers of MoS2 less than 6.3 nm thick. By taking advantage of the giant elastic scattering efficiency in ultra-thin high-index 2D materials, we also demonstrated high-efficiency gratings based on a single- or few-layers of MoS2. The capability of manipulating the flow of light in 2D materials opens an exciting avenue towards unprecedented miniaturization of optical components and the integration of advanced optical functionalities. More importantly, the unique and large tunability of the refractive index by electric field in layered MoS2 will enable various applications in electrically tunable atomically thin optical components, such as micro-lenses with electrically tunable focal lengths, electrical tunable phase shifters with ultra-high accuracy, which cannot be realized by conventional bulk solids.
