Two Cases of Newly Characterized Neisseria Species, Brazil.

ABSTRACT: We describe 2 human cases of infection with a new Neisseria species (putatively N. brasiliensis), 1 of which involved bacteremia. Genomic analyses found that both isolates were distinct strains of the same species, were closely related to N. iguanae, and contained a capsule synthesis operon similar to N. meningitidis.

The invasive Neisseria meningitidis MenC CC103 from Brazil is characterized by an accessory gene repertoire.

Project description:Neisseria meningitidis infections are a major issue for global health. The invasive MenC ST-103 clonal complex (CC103) has been the most prevalent in meningococcal outbreaks in Brazil, occurring also in several countries worldwide. Here we have analysed the population structure and accessory genome of MenC CC103 strains from a global perspective. An in-depth phylogenomic analysis revealed a lineage of N. meningitidis causing meningitis in Brazil and the United Kingdom. This lineage was also characterized as harbouring a particular accessory genome composed of CRISPR/Cas and restriction modification systems. This lineage was also characterized by a genomic island resembling an integrative and conjugative element. This island carried genes potentially associated with virulence and fitness. We propose this accessory gene repertoire could be contributing to the spatial-temporal persistence of the invasive MenC CC103 lineage.

SARS-CoV-2 reinfection: report of two cases in Southeast Brazil.

Project description:From February 26, 2020 to March 11, 2021, coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic resulted in 11,439,558 cases and 277,102 deaths in Brazil. Among them, 2,195,130 cases and 63,965 deaths occurred in Sao Paulo State, Southeast Brazil. The recent emergence and rise of new variants of SARS-CoV-2 is of concern because of their higher transmissibility and possible association with more severe disease. Cases of SARS-CoV-2 reinfections have been described since December 2020 in Brazil. This report describes two cases of COVID-19 reinfection, that occurred five and six months after the first infection, during the second wave of the pandemic in Sao Paulo State. Both patients presented mild symptoms in the two COVID-19 episodes and different lineages of SARS-CoV-2 were identified: B.1.1.33 and B.1.1.28 lineages in case 1 and B1.1.128 and P. 2 lineages in case 2.

Two new species of Tynanthus Miers (Bignonieae, Bignoniaceae) from Brazil.

Project description:Tynanthus is a genus of lianas that is broadly distributed through the Neotropics. Two new species of Tynanthus from Brazil are here described and illustrated: Tynanthusdensiflorus, from Amazonas, and Tynanthusespiritosantensis, from Espírito Santo. Tynanthusdensiflorus is recognized by the conspicuous interpetiolar glandular fields, a feature rarely found in Tynanthus, and the dense thyrses. Tynanthusespiritosantensis, on the other hand, is recognized by the bromeliad-like prophylls of the axillary buds and the lax thyrses. Information on the distribution, conservation status and morphologically similar species are provided.

Project description:Microarray comparative genome hybridization (mCGH) data was collected from one Neisseria cinerea, two Neisseria lactamica, two Neisseria gonorrhoeae, and 48 Neisseria meningitidis isolates. For N. meningitidis, these isolates are from diverse clonal complexes, invasive and carriage strains, and all major serogroups. The microarray platform represented N. meningitidis strains MC58, Z2491, and FAM18 and N. gonorrhoeae FA1090.

Two new species of Tornidae (Caenogastropoda, Rissooidea) from Espirito Santo, Brazil.

Project description:Two new species of shallow water Tornidae are found in Espírito Santo state, Brazil, formally described herein. They belong to a complex group of tiny gastropods, in such the taxonomy is very confused. Cyclostremiscus mohicanussp. n. is characterized by three well-developed spiral, equidistant carinas, working as base of three series of tall, aligned periostracal rods. Episcinia itanhunasp. n. has as single sculpture a series of pustules in periphery, but the periostracum bears three series of peripheral fringes with irregular rods. The new species are compared with the allies, showing a close relation with Caribbean fauna, but possessing worthy differences. These similarities have raised misidentifications.

Neisseria meningitidis disease-associated clones in Amazonas State, Brazil.

Project description:BackgroundThe aim of this study is to describe the molecular epidemiology of Neisseria meningitidis invasive disease before the introduction of serogroup C conjugate vaccine in Amazonas State in 2010.MethodsMeningococcal disease reported cases were investigated in Amazonas State during the period 2000-2010. N. meningitidis isolates (n = 196) recovered from patients were genotyped by multilocus sequence typing (MLST) and sequencing of porB, porA, fetA, fHbp and penA. Antimicrobial susceptibility was determined using E-test.ResultsIn the study period, 948 cases were reported; the incidence was 2.8 for the entire state and 4.8 per 100,000 in the capital of Manaus. Most meningococcal disease was caused by N. meningitidis belonging to ST-32 (72%; 141/196) or ST-103 (21%; 41/196) clonal complexes. Capsular switching (B→C) was suggested within clonal complex (cc) 32. There were 6 (3%; 6/196) strains with intermediate susceptibility to penicillin and a single strain was resistant to rifampicin. Since 2007, serogroup C strains belonging to the cc103 have predominated and case-fatality has increased.ConclusionWe demonstrate a high rate of meningococcal disease in Amazonas State, where, like other parts of Brazil, serogroup C replaced serogroup B during 2000s. These data serve as a baseline to measure impact of serogroup C conjugate vaccine introduction in 2010. This study emphasizes the need for enhanced surveillance to monitor changes in meningococcal disease trends following the introduction of meningococcal vaccines.

Molecular epidemiology of Neisseria meningitidis serogroup B in Brazil.

Project description:BackgroundNeisseria meningitidis serogroup B has been predominant in Brazil, but no broadly effective vaccine is available to prevent endemic meningococcal disease. To understand genetic diversity among serogroup B strains in Brazil, we selected a nationally representative sample of clinical disease isolates from 2004, and a temporally representative sample for the state of São Paulo (1988-2006) for study (n = 372).MethodsWe performed multi-locus sequence typing (MLST) and sequence analysis of five outer membrane protein (OMP) genes, including novel vaccine targets fHbp and nadA.ResultsIn 2004, strain B:4:P1.15,19 clonal complex ST-32/ET-5 (cc32) predominated throughout Brazil; regional variation in MLST sequence type (ST), fetA, and porB was significant but diversity was limited for nadA and fHbp. Between 1988 and 1996, the São Paulo isolates shifted from clonal complex ST-41/44/Lineage 3 (cc41/44) to cc32. OMP variation was associated with but not predicted by cc or ST. Overall, fHbp variant 1/subfamily B was present in 80% of isolates and showed little diversity. The majority of nadA were similar to reference allele 1.ConclusionsA predominant serogroup B lineage has circulated in Brazil for over a decade with significant regional and temporal diversity in ST, fetA, and porB, but not in nadA and fHbp.
