Animals generate diverse motor behaviors, yet how the same motor neurons (MNs) generate two distinct or antagonistic behaviors remains an open question. Here, we characterize <i>Drosophila</i> larval muscle activity patterns and premotor/motor circuits to understand how they generate forward and backward locomotion.
