Eriocoma valdesii, a new species from Mexico (Poaceae, Stipeae).

ABSTRACT: Eriocoma valdesii sp. nov., is described and illustrated. The new species was found growing on calcareous rocky slopes and hillsides between 1700-2721 m in Coahuila, Nuevo León, San Luis Potosí, and Tamaulipas. The new species is morphologically similar to Eriocoma lobata but differs in having ligules (2-) 4.5-8.5 mm long with acute to narrowly acute and lacerate apices and florets with a sharp-pointed callus. In addition, we include a key to the species of Eriocoma in northeastern México.

Evidence from lemma epidermal pattern, cytology and molecular phylogenetic analyses based on the nuclear ITS sequence data confirm its systematic position in Ptilagrostis.

Synopsis of the tribe Stipeae (Poaceae) in Nepal.

Project description:In Nepal the Stipeae consists of six genera: Achnatherum, Orthoraphium, Piptatherum, Ptilagrostis, Stipa, Trikeraia, and 15 species. Two new combinations, Ptilagrostis duthiei (Hook. f.) M.Nobis & P.D.Gudkova and Achnatherum staintonii (Bor) M.Nobis & P.D.Gudkova, are proposed, and new country records for Stipa klimesii, Ptilagrostis dichotoma, Ptilagrostis concinna and Achnatherum jacquemontii are reported. The records of Stipa roborowskyi, S. przewalskyi, S. capillata, S. consanguinea, S. mongholica, and S. sibirica, previously thought to occur in Nepal were based on misidentifications, and these have been excluded from the list of Nepalese Stipeae. We present keys for the identification of genera and species, and a checklist including information on nomenclatural types, regional and national distribution, and habitat. A lectotype is designated for Stipa brandisii Mez.

Project description:Nassella hyalina (cane needle grass) is on the Alert List for Environmental Weeds in Australia. We present here the first complete chloroplast sequence of N. hyalina reconstructed from Illumina whole-genome sequencing. The complete chloroplast sequence is 137,606 bp in size and has a gene content and structure similar to those of other published chloroplast genomes of Stipeae.

Complete chloroplast genome of Serrated Tussock, Nassella trichotoma (Poaceae: Stipeae).

Project description:Nassella trichotoma is one of the most serious weed species in Australia. It is often confused with other Nassella and stipoid species, especially at the young seedling stage, adding another layer of complexity in effective weed management. We report here the complete chloroplast genome of N. trichotoma (137,568 bp, GenBank accession number KX792500.2) sequenced using Next Generation Sequencing technology (Illumina). The N. trichotoma was grouped closely with other Nassella species and separated from other Stipeae species in the phylogenetic tree constructed based on the complete chloroplast genome sequences. The sequence information could be used for further identification of novel DNA barcodes for correct weed identification and subsequently improve management of this invasive grass.

We present here, the complete chloroplast sequence of N. neesiana reconstructed from Illumina whole genome sequencing. The complete chloroplast sequence is 137,700 bp in size, and has similar gene content and structure as other published chloroplast genomes of Stipeae. The N. neesiana chloroplast genome is deposited at GenBank under accession number MF480752.

Revision of Poa L. (Poaceae, Pooideae, Poeae, Poinae) in Mexico: new records, re-evaluation of P. ruprechtii, and two new species, P. palmeri and P. wendtii.

Project description:A revision and key to the 23 species and eight subspecies of Poa (including Dissanthelium) known to occur in Mexico is provided. All voucher specimens seen are cited for accepted taxa, except Poa annua for which one voucher per state is provided. Taxa not previously known from, or poorly understood in, Mexico are discussed.Poa palmerisp. nov. is endemic to forested slopes of the Sierra Madre Oriental, and we distinguished it from Poa ruprechtii s.s., a species of central Mexico that is here emended to include Poa sharpii (syn. nov.). Poa wendtiisp. nov. is described from the Sierra Santa Rosa in northern Coahuila. Poa tacanae is placed in synonymy in Poa seleri. Poa gymnantha and Poa occidentalis are newly reported for Mexico, and material historically identified as Poa villaroelii areplaced in Poa chamaeclinos.The genus Dissanthelium is considered to belong within Poa, and the Mexican taxa, Dissanthelium calycina subsp. mathewsii and Dissanthelium californicum, are treated as Poa calycina var. mathewsii and Poa thomasii, respectively. Poa subsect. Papillopoasubsect. nov. is erected for Poa mulleri. Lectotypes are designated for Poa conglomerata and Poa seleri.

Poa magellensis (Poaceae), a new species from Central Apennine (Italy).

Project description:A new species, Poa magellensis sp. nov., is described and illustrated based on collections from the Majella Mountains in Central Apennine, Italy. It is morphologically similar to P. ligulata Boiss., but can be distinguished by green leaves, the basal ones adaxially lightly scabrous or sparsely hairy, longer ligules particularly in the upper leaves, panicles denser with primary branches sub-erect to erect, glumes with broader scarious margin, more acute glumes and lemmas, lemmas and paleas longer, rachilla hairy, calluses usually with a crown of hairs or shortly webbed, caryopses longer. A distribution map of the species is also presented.

New combinations and updated descriptions in Podagrostis (Agrostidinae, Poaceae) from the Neotropics and Mexico.

Project description:Based on morphological study and corroborated by unpublished molecular phylogenetic analyses, five grass species of high-mountain grasslands in Mexico, Central and South America, Agrostis bacillata, A. exserta, A. liebmannii, A. rosei, and A. trichodes, are transferred to Podagrostis and bring the number of species of this genus recognized in the New World to ten. The name Apera liebmannii is lectotypified and epitypified. We provide an updated genus description for Podagrostis, and updated species descriptions, images, and notes on the new combinations. The diagnostic characteristics differentiating Podagrostis from Agrostis are: a) palea that reaches from (2/3) ¾ to almost the apex of the lemma; b) florets that usually almost equal the length of the glumes or are at least ¾ the length of the glumes; c) rachilla extension present and emerging from under the base of the palea as a slender short stub (rudimentary or up to 1.4 mm long, sometimes obscure in most florets in P. rosei), smooth or scaberulous, glabrous or distally pilulose (hairs < 0.3 mm long); d) lemmas usually awnless, sometimes with a short straight awn 0.2-0.6 mm long, inserted medially or in the upper 1/3 of the lemma, not surpassing the glumes (awn well-developed, straight or geniculate and inserted in lower 1/3 of lemma, not or briefly surpassing glumes in P. rosei). We include a generic key to distinguish the species of Podagrostis from other similar genera in Latin America and a key to distinguish the species of Podagrostis now accepted as occurring in these areas.

New combinations for Pacific endemic species: Marquesan Poaceae, and Micronesian Myrtaceae.

Project description:As part of the preparation for a comprehensive online flora of Pacific oceanic islands, numerous taxonomic changes have been necessary, primarily due to a new wealth of global molecular phylogenetic studies on genera that include Pacific islands species. In order to compile an accurate checklist of the Pacific island flora with up-to-date taxonomies, we are moving several species to their currently accepted genera. Two Marquesan Pennisetum Rich. are transferred to Cenchrus L. with the new combinations Cenchrus articularis (Trin.) M. Tornabene & W.L. Wagner, and Cenchrus henryanus (F. Br.) M. Tornabene & W.L. Wagner. A key to Marquesas Cenchrus is also provided to differentiate the two species. Additionally, one species of Eugenia L. is transferred to Syzygium Gaertn. with the new combination Syzygium stelechanthoides (Kaneh.) M. Tornabene & W.L. Wagner in accord with the aforementioned studies.
