Integration of Latin American Complementary and Alternative Medicine Topics Into a Doctor of Pharmacy Curriculum and Survey of Student Attitudes and Behaviors.

ABSTRACT: One in 3 adults report using complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) and as many as 7 in 10 Hispanic patients report CAM use. Pharmacists often encounter patients who use CAM products and therefore college of pharmacy curricular standards require both CAM and cultural competence training; however, there is little guidance for colleges on how to best deliver this material. In Fall 2017, Larkin University College of Pharmacy implemented a curricular change wherein first professional (P1) year pharmacy students selected, researched, and presented on a CAM product from Latin America. Pre-post surveys were administered to the students to measure their attitudes and behaviors toward CAM before and after completing their project. Survey results showed that student attitudes and behaviors toward CAM were largely unchanged; however, post-survey results showed that students agreed that they knew where to search for Latin American CAM information (P < 0.05). Integration of Latin American CAM topics was successfully implemented in the P1 year of a Doctor of Pharmacy degree curriculum to foster cultural competence.

Project description:Competencies approach is a strategy advised by academicians, international organizations with competence in education (e.g., UNESCO), and those related to veterinary medicine practice (e.g., OIE [World Organisation for Animal Health, formerly International Office of Epizootics] and PANVET [Pan-American Association for Veterinary Sciences]) to answer society's demands for professionals. In Latin American universities, important initiatives to adopt competencies approach were developed by Tuning América Latina and VINCULAENTORNO (project developed by several international institutions, including IESALC from UNESCO [International Institution for Higher Education in Latin America and the Caribbean] focused on the entailment of universities with their environment, to foster social and economic sustainable development) more than a decade ago. In Venezuela, renewed efforts concerning curricular revision were carried out by academicians, taking into account the recommendations made by peer reviewers, during the accreditation process with ARCU-SUR regarding veterinary programs. The present document explores curricular designs of immunology for veterinary students in different universities to determine common characteristics, in order to obtain valuable information for future curricular plans. Veterinary Immunology courses from 24 universities in six Latin-American countries were examined, searching for common content. Other curricular variables, e.g., instructional models, hours planned for theoretical and laboratory activities, educational credits, position in curricular trees, previous requirements, and implementation dates, were considered. The average ± standard deviation of immunology issues studied among the universities was 31±7.9 of the 63 listed topics, and the similarity was 79.2% (n = 19 courses), but other significant differences and curricular variations were recorded. This article describes novel aspects of curricular facts of this biomedical area in Latin America; these results may be valuable to design future curricular planning and a unified and precise curriculum on veterinary courses.

Project description:BackgroundLittle is known about knowledge, attitudes and behaviors concerning Chagas disease (CD) among Latin American migrants in Germany to inform public health decision making.MethodsA cross-sectional, questionnaire-based study was conducted between March 2014 and October 2019 among Latin American migrants in six cities in Germany to obtain information on migration history, socioeconomic and insurance status, knowledge about CD, potential risk factors for Trypanosoma cruzi infection, and willingness to donate blood or organs.Results168 participants completed the questionnaire. The four countries with the highest proportion of participants contributing to the study population were Colombia, Mexico, Peru and Ecuador. Before migrating to Europe, the majority of the study population resided in an urban setting in houses made of stone or concrete, had higher academic education and was integrated into the German healthcare and healthcare insurance system. The majority of all study participants were also willing to donate blood and organs and a quarter of them had donated blood previously. However, many participants lacked basic knowledge about symptoms and modes of transmission of Chagas disease. One out of 56 serologic tests (1.8%) performed was positive. The seropositive female participant born in Argentina had a negative PCR test and no signs of cardiac or other organ involvement.ConclusionsThe study population does not reflect the population structure at risk for T. cruzi infection in endemic countries. Most participants had a low risk profile for infection with T. cruzi. Although the sample size was small and sampling was not representative of all persons at risk in Germany, the seroprevalence found was similar to studies previously conducted in Europe. As no systematic screening for T. cruzi in Latin American blood and organ donors as well as in women of child-bearing age of Latin American origin is implemented in Germany, a risk of occasional transmission of T. cruzi remains.
