Bacterial microcompartments (BMCs) are intracellular proteinaceous organelles devoid of a lipid membrane that encapsulates enzymes of metabolic pathways. <i>Salmonella enterica</i> synthesizes propanediol-utilization BMCs containing enzymes involved in the degradation of 1,2-propanediol.
