Project description:An accommodation-free displays, also known as Maxwellian displays, keep the displayed image sharp regardless of the viewer's focal distance. However, they typically suffer from a small eye-box and limited effective field of view (FOV) which requires careful alignment before a viewer can see the image. This paper presents a high-quality accommodation-free head mounted display (aHMD) based on pixel beam scanning for direct image forming on retina. It has an enlarged eye-box and FOV for easy viewing by replicating the viewing points with an array of beam splitters. A prototype aHMD is built using this concept, which shows high definition, low colour aberration 3D augmented reality (AR) images with an FOV of 36°. The advantage of the proposed design over other head mounted display (HMD) architectures is that, due to the narrow, collimated pixel beams, the high image quality is unaffected by changes in eye accommodation, and the approach to enlarge the eye-box is scalable. Most importantly, such an aHMD can deliver realistic three-dimensional (3D) viewing perception with no vergence-accommodation conflict (VAC). It is found that viewing the accommodation-free 3D images with the aHMD presented in this work is comfortable for viewers and does not cause the nausea or eyestrain side effects commonly associated with conventional stereoscopic 3D or HMD displays, even for all day use.

Project description:The perception of depth from relative motion is believed to be a slow process that "builds-up" over a period of observation. However, in the case of motion parallax, the potential accuracy of the depth estimate suffers as the observer translates during the viewing period. Our recent quantitative model for the perception of depth from motion parallax proposes that relative object depth (d) can be determined from retinal image motion (dθ/dt), pursuit eye movement (dα/dt), and fixation distance (f) by the formula: d/f≈dθ/dα. Given the model's dynamics, it is important to know the integration time required by the visual system to recover dα and dθ, and then estimate d. Knowing the minimum integration time reveals the incumbent error in this process. A depth-phase discrimination task was used to determine the time necessary to perceive depth-sign from motion parallax. Observers remained stationary and viewed a briefly translating random-dot motion parallax stimulus. Stimulus duration varied between trials. Fixation on the translating stimulus was monitored and enforced with an eye-tracker. The study found that relative depth discrimination can be performed with presentations as brief as 16.6 ms, with only two stimulus frames providing both retinal image motion and the stimulus window motion for pursuit (mean range=16.6-33.2 ms). This was found for conditions in which, prior to stimulus presentation, the eye was engaged in ongoing pursuit or the eye was stationary. A large high-contrast masking stimulus disrupted depth-discrimination for stimulus presentations less than 70-75 ms in both pursuit and stationary conditions. This interval might be linked to ocular-following response eye-movement latencies. We conclude that neural mechanisms serving depth from motion parallax generate a depth estimate much more quickly than previously believed. We propose that additional sluggishness might be due to the visual system's attempt to determine the maximum dθ/dα ratio for a selection of points on a complicated stimulus.

Project description:PurposeThe objective measurement of binocular accommodation remains a challenge. The dynamic stimulation aberrometry (DSA) system uses wavefront measurements to dynamically assess accommodation. In this study, we sought to introduce this method in a large number of patients of varying age and compared it with the subjective push-up method as well as the historical results of Duane.DesignThis study is an evaluation of diagnostic technology.SubjectsNinety-one patients aged 20 to 67 years (70 healthy, phakic eyes and 21 myopic eyes after phakic intraocular lens implantation) were enrolled at a tertiary eye hospital.MethodsAll patients underwent DSA measurements; the accommodative amplitude of 13 patients chosen at random was additionally examined using the subjective push-up method introduced by Duane. DSA measurements were also compared with Duane's historical results.Main outcome measuresAccommodative amplitude, dynamic parameters of accommodation, and near pupil motility.ResultsDynamic stimulation aberrometry allowed objective measurement of binocular accommodation, which decreased with age (e.g., 30-39 years vs. > 50 years; 3.8 ± 0.9 diopters [D] and 0.1 ± 0.4 D, respectively). Dynamic parameters, such as time delay of the commencement of accommodation after near target presentation, increased with age (0.26 ± 0.14 seconds for 20-30 years vs. 0.43 ± 0.15 seconds for 40-50 years, P = 0.0002). The objective accommodative amplitude was significantly smaller than Duane's historic results (P = 0.001) as well as the subjective push-up method. Dynamic stimulation aberrometry records pupil motility dynamically in parallel to wavefront measurements. Maximum pupil motility during accommodation significantly decreased with age (P = 0.0002). Maximum pupillary speed did not correlate significantly with age.ConclusionsDynamic stimulation aberrometry allows objective, dynamic, binocular measurement of accommodation and pupil motility with high time resolution in subjects with accommodative amplitudes up to 7 D. Project description:BackgroundTherapeutic digital health applications (DiGAs) are expected to significantly enhance access to evidence-based care. Since 2020, German physicians and psychotherapists have been able to prescribe approved DiGAs, which are reimbursed by statutory health insurance. This study investigates the usage, knowledge and perception of DiGAs as well as the growing digitalization among internal medicine physicians in Germany.MethodsA web-based survey was distributed at the 2024 annual congress of the German Society for Internal Medicine. Participants could respond by scanning a QR code or directly on a tablet.ResultsA total of 100 physicians completed the survey, with a mean age of 43.4 years. The majority were internal medicine physicians (85%). Of the respondents, 31% had already prescribed DiGAs, and 29% had tested one. Self-rated knowledge of DiGAs was low (median score 3.17/10). The main barriers identified were lack of knowledge about effective implementation (60%), lack of time for patient onboarding (27%), and concerns about patient adherence (21%). However, 92% believed that DiGAs could improve care, and 88% expressed interest in specific digital health training. The majority (64%) stated that digitalization had a positive impact on medical care and 39% of physicians expected their daily workload to decrease due to digitalization. In addition, 38% believed that the physician-patient relationship would improve as a result of digitalization.ConclusionsWhile physicians widely acknowledged the potential benefits of DiGAs, adoption and understanding remain limited. Specific training in digital health is crucial to accelerate digitalization in internal medicine.

Project description:BackgroundThe recent proliferation and application of digital technologies in public health has spurred interest in digital public health. However, as yet, there appears to be a lack of conceptual clarity and consensus on its definition.ObjectiveIn this scoping review, we seek to assess formal and informal definitions of digital public health in the literature and to understand how these definitions have been conceptualized in relation to digitization, digitalization, and digital transformation.MethodsWe conducted a scoping literature search in Ovid MEDLINE, Embase, Google Scholar, and 14 government and intergovernmental agency websites encompassing 6 geographic regions. Among a total of 409 full articles identified, we reviewed 11 publications that either formally defined digital public health or informally described the integration of digital technologies into public health in relation to digitization, digitalization, and digital transformation, and we conducted a thematic analysis of the identified definitions.ResultsTwo explicit definitions of digital public health were identified, each with divergent meanings. The first definition suggested digital public health was a reimagination of public health using new ways of working, blending established public health wisdom with new digital concepts and tools. The second definition highlighted digital public health as an asset to achieve existing public health goals. In relation to public health, digitization was used to refer to the technical process of converting analog records to digital data, digitalization referred to the integration of digital technologies into public health operations, and digital transformation was used to describe a cultural shift that pervasively integrates digital technologies and reorganizes services on the basis of the health needs of the public.ConclusionsThe definition of digital public health remains contested in the literature. Public health researchers and practitioners need to clarify these conceptual definitions to harness opportunities to integrate digital technologies into public health in a way that maximizes their potential to improve public health outcomes.International registered report identifier (irrid)RR2-10.2196/preprints.27686.

Project description:To preserve competitive advantage in a more and more digitalized environment, today’s organizations seek to assess their level of digital maturity. Given this particular practical relevance, a plethora of digital maturity models, designed to asses a company’s digital status quo, has emerged over the past few years. Largely developed and published by practitioners, the academic value of these models remains obviously unclear. To shed light on their value in a broader sense, in this paper we critically evaluate 17 existing digital maturity models – identified through a systematic literature search (2011–2019) – with regard to their validity of measurement. We base our evaluation on established academic criteria, such as generalizability or theory-based interpretation, that we apply in a qualitative content analysis to these models. Our analysis shows that most of the identified models do not conform to the established evaluation criteria. Based on these insights, we derive a detailed research agenda and suggest respective research questions and strategies.

Project description:Healthcare has always been a strategic domain in which innovative technologies can be applied to increase the effectiveness of services and patient care quality. Recent advancements have been made in the adoption of Digital Twins (DTs) and Personal Knowledge Graphs (PKGs) in this field. Despite this, their introduction has been hindered by the complex nature of the context itself which leads to many challenges both technical and organizational. In this article, we reviewed the literature about these technologies and their integrations, identifying the most critical requirements for clinical platforms. These latter have been used to design CONNECTED (COmpreheNsive and staNdardized hEalth-Care plaTforms to collEct and harmonize clinical Data), a conceptual framework aimed at defining guidelines to overcome the crucial issues related to the development of healthcare applications. It is structured in a multi-layer shape, in which heterogeneous data sources are first integrated, then standardized, and finally used to realize general-purpose DTs of patients backed by PKGs and accessible through dedicated APIs. These DTs will be the foundation on which smart applications can be built.

Project description:PurposeThis study aimed to evaluate differences in objective and subjective accommodation dynamically and simultaneously.MethodsThirty-four pre-presbyopic healthy volunteers (mean age ± SD, 41.0 ± 3.2 years) participated in this study. Initially, the reaction time for detecting a change in the target was measured at near. Dynamic accommodation was then monocularly recorded using an open-view Shack-Hartmann aberrometer and compared with the amplitude and velocity of subjective accommodation.ResultsThe objective amplitude of accommodation (0.97 ± 0.32 diopter [D]) was significantly greater than the subjective amplitude of accommodation (0.62 ± 0.43 D; P < 0.001). The accommodative velocity was significantly faster for the "before the accommodation" response time (0.47 ± 0.38 D/s) than the "after the accommodation" response time (0.21 ± 0.22 D/s; P = 0.007).ConclusionsThe human eye under the monocular condition quickly adjusts to the focal plane to clearly archive the nearby object, and the focal plane thereafter is slowly and accurately adjusted to the visual target after visual recognition.

Project description:Diffractive optical elements (DOEs) are used to shape the wavefront of incident light. This can be used to generate practically any pattern of interest, albeit with varying efficiency. A fundamental challenge associated with DOEs comes from the nanoscale-precision requirements for their fabrication. Here we demonstrate a method to controllably scale up the relevant feature dimensions of a device from tens-of-nanometers to tens-of-microns by immersing the DOEs in a near-index-matched solution. This makes it possible to utilize modern 3D-printing technologies for fabrication, thereby significantly simplifying the production of DOEs and decreasing costs by orders of magnitude, without hindering performance. We demonstrate the tunability of our design for varying experimental conditions, and the suitability of this approach to ultrasensitive applications by localizing the 3D positions of single molecules in cells using our microscale fabricated optical element to modify the point-spread-function (PSF) of a microscope.

Project description:Purpose Digitalization and digital strategy have become one of the variant concepts these days since the fourth industrial revolution 4.0. The earlier debate a on the role of digital strategy and degree of digitalization for environmental and sustainable performance of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) is at its nascent stages. This study aims to investigate the impact of digital strategy and digitalization on the environmental performance in Pakistani SME’s during the pandemic times. In addition, it explores the mediating role of five measures of digitalization degree such as overall digitalization degree (ODD), digitalization methods (OM), digital technology adaptation (DTA), digital product services (DPS) and digital processes (DP). Methods This study collected data from 298 respondents using random sampling technique. The unit of analysis was managerial staff and employees working for the organization for last 5 years. To investigate the relationship between constructs, we considered Structural-equation modeling (SEM) using SMART-PLS. Results Building on the contingency theory, the findings of the research reveal that digital strategy showed a positive impact on digitalization measures but negatively impacted on overall environmental performance. In addition, (DP) ODD, OM, and DPS showed a (negative) positive meaningful impact on environmental performance and (partially) fully mediated the relationship between digital strategy and environmental performance. The digital strategy failed to improve the environmental performance however the role of digitalization is crucial to ensure environmental sustainability. Conclusions Digital strategy alone fails to alleviate the pressure on environmental performance however excessive digitalization can aggravate the adverse consequences on environment. This research provides useful implications for governments and policymakers to avoid excessive digitalization.
