Project description:Inelastic neutron scattering is utilized to directly measure inter-nanoparticle spin waves, or magnons, which arise from the magnetic coupling between 8.4 nm ferrite nanoparticles that are self-assembled into a close-packed lattice, yet are physically separated by oleic acid surfactant. The resulting dispersion curve yields a physically-reasonable, non-negative energy gap only when the effective Q is reduced by the inter-particle spacing. This Q renormalization strongly indicates that the dispersion is a collective excitation between the nanoparticles, rather than originating from within individual nanoparticles. Additionally, the observed magnons are dispersive, respond to an applied magnetic field, and display the expected temperature-dependent Bose population factor. The experimental results are well explained by a limited parameter model which treats the three-dimensional ordered, magnetic nanoparticles as dipolar-coupled superspins.

Project description:Quinacridone (QA) has recently gained attention as an organic semiconductor with unexpectedly high performance in organic devices. The strong intermolecular connection via hydrogen bonds is expected to promote good structural order. When deposited on a substrate, another relevant factor comes into play, namely the 2D-chirality of the quinacridone molecules adsorbed on a surface. Scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) images of monolayer quinacridone on Ag(111) deposited at room temperature reveal the formation of quasi-one-dimensional rows of parallel quinacridone molecules. These rows are segmented into short stacks of a few molecules in which adjacent, flat-lying molecules of a single handedness are linked via hydrogen bonds. After annealing to a temperature of T = 550-570 K, which is close to the sublimation temperature of bulk quinacridone, the structure changes into a stacking of heterochiral quinacridone dimers with a markedly different intermolecular arrangement. Electron diffraction (LEED) and photoelectron emission microscopy (PEEM) data corroborate the STM findings. These results illustrate how the effects of hydrogen bonding and chirality can compete and give rise to very different (meta)stable structures of quinacridone on surfaces.

Project description:Inspired by the unique properties of graphene, research efforts have broadened to investigations of various other two-dimensional materials with the aim of exploring their properties for future applications. Our combined experimental and theoretical study confirms the existence of a binary honeycomb structure formed by Ag and Te on Ag(111). Low-energy electron diffraction shows sharp spots which provide evidence of an undistorted AgTe layer. Band structure data obtained by angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy are closely reproduced by first-principles calculations, using density functional theory (DFT). This confirms the formation of a honeycomb structure with one Ag and one Te atom in the unit cell. In addition, the theoretical band structure reproduces also the finer details of the experimental bands, such as a split of one of the AgTe bands.

Project description:Water molecules in any of the ice polymorphs organize themselves into a perfect four-coordinated hydrogen-bond network at the expense of dense packing. Even at high pressures, there seems to be no way to reconcile the ice rules with the close packing. Here, we report several close-packed ice phases in carbon nanotubes obtained from molecular dynamics simulations of two different water models. Typically they are in plastic states at high temperatures and are transformed into the hydrogen-ordered ice, keeping their close-packed structures at lower temperatures. The close-packed structures of water molecules in carbon nanotubes are identified with those of spheres in a cylinder. We present design principles of hydrogen-ordered, close-packed structures of ice in nanotubes, which suggest many possible dense ice forms with or without nonzero polarization. In fact, some of the simulated ices are found to exhibit ferroelectric ordering upon cooling.

Project description:Predicting the equilibrium ordered structures at internal interfaces, especially in the case of nanometer-scale chemical heterogeneities, is an ongoing challenge in materials science. In this study, we established an ab-initio coarse-grained modeling technique for describing the phase-like behavior of a close-packed stacking-fault-type interface containing solute nanoclusters, which undergo a two-dimensional disorder-order transition, depending on the temperature and composition. Notably, this approach can predict the two-dimensional medium-range ordering in the nanocluster arrays realized in Mg-based alloys, in a manner consistent with scanning tunneling microscopy-based measurements. We predicted that the repulsively interacting solute-cluster system undergoes a continuous evolution into a highly ordered densely packed morphology while maintaining a high degree of six-fold orientational order, which is attributable mainly to an entropic effect. The uncovered interaction-dependent ordering properties may be useful for the design of nanostructured materials utilizing the self-organization of two-dimensional nanocluster arrays in the close-packed interfaces.

Project description:One-dimensional molecular chains with Sierpiński triangles as building blocks were prepared on Au(111) and studied by low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy. Fractal Sierpiński triangles were stabilized by the coordination interaction between 1,3-bi(4-pyridyl) benzene (BPyB) and Co atoms. At low coverages, Sierpiński triangles of high orders were observed. At high coverages, Sierpiński triangles formed two types of one-dimensional molecular chains. The high coverages and matching between molecular size and surface lattices are attributed to the formation of molecular chains.

Project description:BackgroundIn recent years, there is aroused interest in expressing complex systems as networks of interacting nodes. Using descriptors from graph theory, it has been possible to classify many diverse systems derived from social and physical sciences alike. In particular, folded proteins as examples of self-assembled complex molecules have also been investigated intensely using these tools. However, we need to develop additional measures to classify different systems, in order to dissect the underlying hierarchy.Methodology and principal findingsIn this study, a general analytical relation for the dependence of nearest neighbor degree correlations on degree is derived. Dependence of local clustering on degree is shown to be the sole determining factor of assortative versus disassortative mixing in networks. The characteristics of networks constructed from spatial atomic/molecular systems exemplified by self-organized residue networks built from folded protein structures and block copolymers, atomic clusters and well-compressed polymeric melts are studied. Distributions of statistical properties of the networks are presented. For these densely-packed systems, assortative mixing in the network construction is found to apply, and conditions are derived for a simple linear dependence.ConclusionsOur analyses (i) reveal patterns that are common to close-packed clusters of atoms/molecules, (ii) identify the type of surface effects prominent in different close-packed systems, and (iii) associate fingerprints that may be used to classify networks with varying types of correlations.

Project description:Crystal phase regulations may endow materials with enhanced or new functionalities. However, syntheses of noble metal-based allomorphic nanomaterials are extremely difficult, and only a few successful examples have been found. Herein, we report the discovery of hexagonal close-packed Pt-Ni alloy, despite the fact that Pt-Ni alloys are typically crystallized in face-centred cubic structures. The hexagonal close-packed Pt-Ni alloy nano-multipods are synthesized via a facile one-pot solvothermal route, where the branches of nano-multipods take the shape of excavated hexagonal prisms assembled by six nanosheets of 2.5 nm thickness. The hexagonal close-packed Pt-Ni excavated nano-multipods exhibit superior catalytic property towards the hydrogen evolution reaction in alkaline electrolyte. The overpotential is only 65 mV versus reversible hydrogen electrode at a current density of 10 mA cm-2, and the mass current density reaches 3.03 mA μgPt-1 at -70 mV versus reversible hydrogen electrode, which outperforms currently reported catalysts to the best of our knowledge.

Project description:Composite made of multiwalled carbon nanotubes coated with silver was fabricated by an electroless deposition process. The thickness of silver layer is about 40 to 60 nm, characterized as nano-crystalline with (111) crystal orientation along the nanotube's axial direction. Project description:Graphdiyne and derivatives with delocalized π-electron systems are of particular interest owing to their structural, electronic, and transport properties, which are important for potential applications in next-generation electronics. Inspired by recently obtained extended graphdiyne nanowires, explorations of the modulation of the band gap and carrier mobility of this new species are still needed before application in device fabrication. To provide a deeper understanding of these issues, herein we present theoretical studies of one-dimensional extended graphdiyne nanowires using first-principle calculations. Modulation of the electronic properties of the extended graphdiyne nanowire was investigated systemically by considering several chemical and physical factors, including electric field, chemical functionalization, and carbo-merization. The band gap was observed to increase upon application of an electric field parallel to the plane of the synthesized graphdiyne nanowire in a non-periodic direction. Although chemical functionalization and carbo-merization caused the band gaps to decrease, the semiconducting property of the nanowires was preserved. Band gap engineering of the extended graphdiyne nanowires was explored regarding the field strength and the number of -C≡C- units in the carbon chain fragments. The charge carrier mobility of chemically functionalized and carbo-merized extended graphdiyne nanowires was also calculated to provide a comparison with pristine nanowire. Moreover, crystal orbital analysis was performed in order to discern the electronic and charge transport properties of the extended graphdiyne nanowires modified by the aforementioned chemical and physical factors.
