Finely tuned eye movements enhance visual acuity.

ABSTRACT: High visual acuity is essential for many tasks, from recognizing distant friends to driving a car. While much is known about how the eye's optics and anatomy contribute to spatial resolution, possible influences from eye movements are rarely considered. Yet humans incessantly move their eyes, and it has long been suggested that oculomotor activity enhances fine pattern vision. Here we examine the role of eye movements in the most common assessment of visual acuity, the Snellen eye chart. By precisely localizing gaze and actively controlling retinal stimulation, we show that fixational behavior improves acuity by more than 0.15 logMAR, at least 2 lines of the Snellen chart. This improvement is achieved by adapting both microsaccades and ocular drifts to precisely position the image on the retina and adjust its motion. These findings show that humans finely tune their fixational eye movements so that they greatly contribute to normal visual acuity.

Distinct eye movement patterns enhance dynamic visual acuity.

Project description:Dynamic visual acuity (DVA) is the ability to resolve fine spatial detail in dynamic objects during head fixation, or in static objects during head or body rotation. This ability is important for many activities such as ball sports, and a close relation has been shown between DVA and sports expertise. DVA tasks involve eye movements, yet, it is unclear which aspects of eye movements contribute to successful performance. Here we examined the relation between DVA and the kinematics of smooth pursuit and saccadic eye movements in a cohort of 23 varsity baseball players. In a computerized dynamic-object DVA test, observers reported the location of the gap in a small Landolt-C ring moving at various speeds while eye movements were recorded. Smooth pursuit kinematics-eye latency, acceleration, velocity gain, position error-and the direction and amplitude of saccadic eye movements were linked to perceptual performance. Results reveal that distinct eye movement patterns-minimizing eye position error, tracking smoothly, and inhibiting reverse saccades-were related to dynamic visual acuity. The close link between eye movement quality and DVA performance has important implications for the development of perceptual training programs to improve DVA.

Fixational eye movements as active sensation for high visual acuity.

Project description:Perception and action are inherently entangled: our world view is shaped by how we explore our environment through complex and variable self-motion. Even when fixating stable stimuli, our eyes undergo small, involuntary movements. Fixational eye movements (FEM) render a stable world jittery on our retinae, which can be expected to harm neural coding. Yet, empirical evidence suggests that FEM help rather than harm human perception of fine detail. Here, we elucidate this paradox by uncovering under which conditions FEM improve or impair retinal coding and human acuity. We combine theory and experiment: model accuracy is directly compared to that of healthy human subjects in a visual acuity task. Acuity is modeled by applying an ideal Bayesian classifier to simulations of retinal spiking activity in the presence of FEM. In addition, empirical FEM are monitored using high-resolution eye-tracking by an adaptive optics scanning laser ophthalmoscope. FEM introduce variability in retinal ganglion cell activity, but they also effectively preprocess inputs to facilitate retinal information encoding. Based on an interplay of these mechanisms, our model predicts a relation between visual acuity, FEM amplitude, and single-trial stimulus size that quantitatively accounts for experimental observations and captures the beneficial effect of FEM. Moreover, we observe that while human subjects' FEM statistics vary with stimulus size, our model suggests that subjects' FEM amplitude remains within a near-optimal range, where acuity is enhanced compared to much larger or smaller amplitudes. Overall, our findings indicate that perception benefits from action even at the fine spatiotemporal scale of FEM.

A neural computation for visual acuity in the presence of eye movements.

Project description:Humans can distinguish visual stimuli that differ by features the size of only a few photoreceptors. This is possible despite the incessant image motion due to fixational eye movements, which can be many times larger than the features to be distinguished. To perform well, the brain must identify the retinal firing patterns induced by the stimulus while discounting similar patterns caused by spontaneous retinal activity. This is a challenge since the trajectory of the eye movements, and consequently, the stimulus position, are unknown. We derive a decision rule for using retinal spike trains to discriminate between two stimuli, given that their retinal image moves with an unknown random walk trajectory. This algorithm dynamically estimates the probability of the stimulus at different retinal locations, and uses this to modulate the influence of retinal spikes acquired later. Applied to a simple orientation-discrimination task, the algorithm performance is consistent with human acuity, whereas naive strategies that neglect eye movements perform much worse. We then show how a simple, biologically plausible neural network could implement this algorithm using a local, activity-dependent gain and lateral interactions approximately matched to the statistics of eye movements. Finally, we discuss evidence that such a network could be operating in the primary visual cortex.

Eye movements shape visual learning.

Project description:Most people easily learn to recognize new faces and places, and with more extensive practice they can become experts at visual tasks as complex as radiological diagnosis and action video games. Such perceptual plasticity has been thoroughly studied in the context of training paradigms that require constant fixation. In contrast, when observers learn under more natural conditions, they make frequent saccadic eye movements. Here we show that such eye movements can play an important role in visual learning. Observers performed a task in which they executed a saccade while discriminating the motion of a cued visual stimulus. Additional stimuli, presented simultaneously with the cued one, permitted an assessment of the perceptual integration of information across visual space. Consistent with previous results on perisaccadic remapping [M. Szinte, D. Jonikaitis, M. Rolfs, P. Cavanagh, H. Deubel, J. Neurophysiol. 116, 1592-1602 (2016)], most observers preferentially integrated information from locations representing the presaccadic and postsaccadic retinal positions of the cue. With extensive training on the saccade task, these observers gradually acquired the ability to perform similar motion integration without making eye movements. Importantly, the newly acquired pattern of spatial integration was determined by the metrics of the saccades made during training. These results suggest that oculomotor influences on visual processing, long thought to subserve the function of perceptual stability, also play a role in visual plasticity.

Fixational Eye Movements Enhance the Precision of Visual Information Transmitted by the Primate Retina.

Project description:Fixational eye movements alter the number and timing of spikes transmitted from the retina to the brain, but whether these changes enhance or degrade the visual signal is unclear. To quantify this, we developed a Bayesian method for reconstructing natural images from the recorded spikes of hundreds of macaque retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) of the major cell types, combining a likelihood model for RGC light responses with the natural image prior implicitly embedded in an artificial neural network optimized for denoising. The method matched or surpassed the performance of previous reconstruction algorithms, and provided an interpretable framework for characterizing the retinal signal. Reconstructions were improved with artificial stimulus jitter that emulated fixational eye movements, even when the jitter trajectory was inferred from retinal spikes. Reconstructions were degraded by small artificial perturbations of spike times, revealing more precise temporal encoding than suggested by previous studies. Finally, reconstructions were substantially degraded when derived from a model that ignored cell-to-cell interactions, indicating the importance of stimulus-evoked correlations. Thus, fixational eye movements enhance the precision of the retinal representation.

Eye drift during fixation predicts visual acuity.

Project description:Visual acuity is commonly assumed to be determined by the eye optics and spatial sampling in the retina. Unlike a camera, however, the eyes are never stationary during the acquisition of visual information; a jittery motion known as ocular drift incessantly displaces stimuli over many photoreceptors. Previous studies have shown that acuity is impaired in the absence of retinal image motion caused by eye drift. However, the relation between individual drift characteristics and acuity remains unknown. Here, we show that a) healthy emmetropes exhibit a large variability in their amount of drift and that b) these differences profoundly affect the structure of spatiotemporal signals to the retina. We further show that c) the spectral distribution of the resulting luminance modulations strongly correlates with individual visual acuity and that d) natural intertrial fluctuations in the amount of drift modulate acuity. As a consequence, in healthy emmetropes, acuity can be predicted from the motor behavior elicited by a simple fixation task, without directly measuring it. These results shed new light on how oculomotor behavior contributes to fine spatial vision.

Fixational eye movements predict visual sensitivity.

Project description:During steady fixation, observers make small fixational saccades at a rate of around 1-2 per second. Presentation of a visual stimulus triggers a biphasic modulation in fixational saccade rate-an initial inhibition followed by a period of elevated rate and a subsequent return to baseline. Here we show that, during passive viewing, this rate signature is highly sensitive to small changes in stimulus contrast. By training a linear support vector machine to classify trials in which a stimulus is either present or absent, we directly compared the contrast sensitivity of fixational eye movements with individuals' psychophysical judgements. Classification accuracy closely matched psychophysical performance, and predicted individuals' threshold estimates with less bias and overall error than those obtained using specific features of the signature. Performance of the classifier was robust to changes in the training set (novel subjects and/or contrasts) and good prediction accuracy was obtained with a practicable number of trials. Our results indicate a tight coupling between the sensitivity of visual perceptual judgements and fixational eye control mechanisms. This raises the possibility that fixational saccades could provide a novel and objective means of estimating visual contrast sensitivity without the need for observers to make any explicit judgement.

Finely-Tuned Bis(imino)pyridylcobalt Complexes Enhance Ethylene Polymerization: The Role of Bulky and Halogen Substituents.

Project description:The bis(imino)pyridylcobalt complexes have been finely tuned through using the aniline derivative bearing a meta-chloro substituent, besides its ortho- and para-di(4-fluorophenyl)methyl and ortho-methyl substituents for the series of 2-[1-(3-chloro-4,6-bis((di(4-fluorophenyl)methyl)-2-methylphenylimino)ethyl]-6-[1-(arylimino)ethyl]pyridylcobalt(II) chlorides (2,6-Me2Ph, Co1; 2,6-Et2Ph, Co2; 2,6-iPr2Ph, Co3; 2,4,6-Me3Ph, Co4; and 2,6-Et2-4-MePh, Co5). The compounds were characterized using elemental analysis, 1H/13C NMR, FT-IR spectroscopy, and the single-crystal X-ray diffraction used in confirming the molecular structures of Co1, Co2, Co4, and Co5. The newly synthesized precatalysts, maintaining steric influences with the addition of an electron-withdrawing meta-chloro group, achieved higher activities along with better thermal stability, and controlled molecular weights of polyethylenes obtained. Upon activation with either MAO or MMAO, all catalysts exhibited remarkable activity for ethylene polymerization, for example, 9.2 × 106 g mol-1 h-1 by Co1 at 70 °C with 30 min and 18.0 × 106 g mol-1 h-1 by Co4 with the first 5 min. Co4 demonstrated exceptionally thermal stability with the peak activity of 8.9 × 106 g mol-1 h-1 at 70 °C and slightly decreased to 7.2 × 106 g mol-1 h-1 at 80 °C, and even maintained an activity of 1.6 × 106 g mol-1 h-1 at 100 °C. More importantly, all resultant polyethylenes were characterized as having vinyl-terminal and high-linear feature along with narrow dispersity; the molecular weights could be adapted in the ranges from 6.4 to 50.0 kg mol-1. In comparison with previous cobalt analogs, the current system performed better thermal stability and polymerization efficiency. Therefore, such robust complex catalysts are potentially considered for the polyethylene industry.

Herpesvirus gB: A Finely Tuned Fusion Machine.

Project description:Enveloped viruses employ a class of proteins known as fusogens to orchestrate the merger of their surrounding envelope and a target cell membrane. Most fusogens accomplish this task alone, by binding cellular receptors and subsequently catalyzing the membrane fusion process. Surprisingly, in herpesviruses, these functions are distributed among multiple proteins: the conserved fusogen gB, the conserved gH/gL heterodimer of poorly defined function, and various non-conserved receptor-binding proteins. We summarize what is currently known about gB from two closely related herpesviruses, HSV-1 and HSV-2, with emphasis on the structure of the largely uncharted membrane interacting regions of this fusogen. We propose that the unusual mechanism of herpesvirus fusion could be linked to the unique architecture of gB.
