Description of a new, unusual species of Diestostemma Amyot & Serville (Hemiptera, Cicadellidae) from Ecuador.

ABSTRACT: Diestostemma bicristata sp. nov., is described from Napo Province, Ecuador. It is unusual for the genus in lacking a visible white powdery covering, having raised, weakly reticulate veins on the forewing, a short metathoracic femur (half length of the metathoracic tibia), and is the only species with a double-crested pronotum.

Project description:Enchenopa Amyot & Serville, 1843 is a diverse treehopper genus widespread across the New World. We describe two new Enchenopa species from northwest Ecuador: Enchenopagennyae sp. nov. from urban forest remnants at the foothills of the Andes cordillera and Enchenopachocoandina sp. nov. from secondary montane forests. Enchenopagennyae sp. nov. is placed in the E.biplaga species group and is distinguished by the sexual dimorphism of the pronotal horn and lateral carina shape, the straight metopidium, 2-4 accessory carinae and the whitish dorsal spot and subapical band. Enchenopachocoandina sp. nov. belongs to the E.andina species group and is diagnosed by its reddish central carina and posterior pronotal process apex, presence of an obtuse projection rather than an anterior horn, three or four irregular accessory carinae, and apical amber forewing patch. Illustrations, notes on natural history, and keys to species of the E.biplaga and E.andina species groups are also provided.

The unusual Afrotropical and Oriental leafhopper subfamily Signoretiinae (Hemiptera, Cicadellidae): taxonomic notes, new distributional records, and description of two new Signoretia species.

Project description:The leafhopper subfamily Signoretiinae is redescribed and includes two tribes: Signoretiini Baker and Phlogisini Linnavuori. Redescriptions of included tribes, diagnoses and a taxonomic key to genera are provided. New records for genera of Signoretiinae are as follows: Phlogis in Central African Republic, Malaysia and Thailand; Preta in Thailand; and Signoretia in the Republic of the Congo, Zambia, Thailand, Vietnam, and Taiwan (China). Signoretia pacifica is newly recorded from Cameroon. In addition, detailed illustrations of the male genitalia of the previously described species, Chouious tianzeus, Preta gratiosa,and Signoretia yangli are provided; the male genitalia of Signoretia malaya are described for the first time; and two new species of Signoretia are described, Signoretia delicata sp. n. from the Philippinesand Signoretia kintendela sp. n. from the Republic of the Congo.

Project description:A new genus of tribe Erythroneurini from Thailand, Thaioneura gen. n., including three new species: Thaioneura nigrilinea sp. n. (type species), Thaioneura sinuata sp. n. and Thaioneura suphanburia sp. n., is described and illustrated and a key to species is provided. The new genus exhibits a pattern of interspecific variation in the hind wing venation that has not been observed in other genera of the tribe.

Phylogeny and taxonomic revision of Metacephalus (Insecta: Hemiptera: Cicadellidae) with description of seven new leafhopper species.

Project description:Metacephalus Delong and Martinson, 1973 includes leafhopper species from Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador (new record), Guyana, French Guiana (new record), Panama, Peru, and Venezuela. In the present revisionary study, we describe seven new species of Metacephalus, propose one species synonymy (M. cinctus as junior synonym of M. facetus), and provide new country records for species, considerably expanding knowledge about species distributions. The study also provides redescriptions and photographs of diagnostic characters for 12 previously described valid species and an identification key to all 21 species of Metacephalus. Molecular phylogenies of Metacephalus species are hypothesized based on maximum likelihood and Bayesian inference analyses of 1,387 bp of mitochondrial Cytochrome Oxidase I and 16S rDNA and nuclear histone H3. Results of the molecular phylogeny generated herein provided a base for understanding character homologies when presenting morphological diagnoses of Metacephalus species and exposed a high level of convergent characters in color pattern and male genitalia morphology usually used in morphological taxonomy of this group of leafhoppers.
