Comparative Analysis between Wild and Cultivated Cucumbers Reveals Transcriptional Changes during Domestication Process.

ABSTRACT: The cultivated cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) was reported to have been developed from a wild cucumber (Cucumis hystrix Chakrav.), nevertheless, these two organisms exhibit noteworthy differences. For example, the wild cucumber is known for its high resistance to different biotic and abiotic stresses. Moreover, the leaves and fruits of the wild cucumber have a bitter taste compared to the cultivated cucumber. These differences could be attributed mainly to the differences in gene expression levels.
