Carbon-Based Electrocatalysts Derived From Biomass for Oxygen Reduction Reaction: A Minireview.

ABSTRACT: Oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) electrocatalysts derived from biomass have become one of the research focuses in hetero-catalysis due to their low cost, high performance, and reproducibility properties. Related researches are of great significance for the development of next-generation fuel cells and metal-air batteries. Herein, the preparation methods of various biomass-derived catalysts and their performance in alkaline, neutral, and acidic media are summarized. This review clarifies the research progress of biomass carbon-based electrocatalysts for ORR in acidic, alkaline and neutral media, and discusses the future development trends. This minireview can give us an important enlightenment to practical application in the future.

Glucose-derived carbon materials with tailored properties as electrocatalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction.

Project description:Nitrogen-doped biomass-derived carbon materials were prepared by hydrothermal carbonization of glucose, and their textural and chemical properties were subsequently tailored to achieve materials with enhanced electrochemical performance towards the oxygen reduction reaction. Carbonization and physical activation were applied to modify the textural properties, while nitrogen functionalities were incorporated via different N-doping methodologies (ball milling and conventional methods) using melamine. A direct relationship between the microporosity of the activated carbons and the limiting current density was found, with the increase of microporosity leading to interesting improvements of the limiting current density. Regardless of the doping method used, similar amounts of nitrogen were incorporated into the carbon structures. However, significant differences were observed in the nitrogen functionalities according to the doping method applied: ball milling appeared to originate preferentially quaternary and oxidized nitrogen groups, while the formation of pyridinic and pyrrolic groups was favoured by conventional doping. The onset potential was improved and the two-electron mechanism of the original activated sample was shifted closer to a four-electron pathway due to the presence of nitrogen. Interestingly, the high pyridinic content related to a high ratio of pyridinic/quaternary nitrogen results in an increase of the onset potential, while a decrease in the quaternary/pyrrolic nitrogen ratio favors an increase in the number of electrons. Accordingly, the electrocatalyst with the highest performance was obtained from the activated sample doped with nitrogen by the conventional method, which combined the most appropriate textural and chemical properties: high microporosity and adequate proportion of the nitrogen functionalities.

Sponge-like N-doped carbon materials with Co-based nanoparticles derived from biomass as highly efficient electrocatalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction in alkaline media.

Project description:The development of highly efficient and low-cost catalysts towards Oxygen Reduction Reaction (ORR) is of significance for renewable energy technologies such as proton-exchange membrane fuel cells and metal-air batteries. This study is to utilize the biomass of soybean straw as the supporting carbon materials to prepare nitrogen and cobalt dual-doped porous biocarbon electrocatalysts (CoNASS) possessing high content of N (1.92%), embedding cobalt nanoparticles and sponge-like structure with high specific surface area (1185.00 m2 g-1) as well as appropriate pore diameter (∼2.17 nm). Meantime, CoNASS exhibits a good electrocatalytic activity with a half-wave potential of 0.786 V (vs. RHE), comparable to a half-wave potential of 0.827 V (vs. RHE) for the commercial Pt/C. The detections of electrochemical kinetics show the electron transfer number of CoNASS is in the range of 3.84-3.92, which indicates 4-electron pathway dominantly occurs in ORR. And the limiting diffusion current density of CoNASS at 1600 rpm is around 5.8 mA cm-2 slightly higher than that of the benchmark Pt/C (5.6 mA cm-2). This work opens a new avenue to utilize soybean straw, one of agriculture waste of large quantity, to prepare high efficient and low-cost catalysts for ORR.

3D interconnected nitrogen-self-doped carbon aerogels as efficient oxygen reduction electrocatalysts derived from biomass gelatin.

Project description:Development of efficient metal-free electrocatalysts derived from biomass with high activity towards oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) has gained significance attention due to their low manufacturing cost, environmental friendliness and easy large-scale production. Hence, we present a facile method to prepare nitrogen-self-doped carbon aerogels (NSCAs) with a three-dimensional (3D) interconnected porous structure and large surface area. The sample is prepared via high-temperature pyrolysis using gelatin as precursor and sodium chloride (NaCl) as sacrificial template. The obtained NSCA-800 catalyst shows excellent ORR performance in O2-saturated alkaline electrolyte, which is comparable to a commercial Pt/C catalyst, in terms of its onset potential (0.92 V vs. RHE), half-wave potential (0.77 V vs. RHE), and limited current density (5.31 mA cm-2). Particularly, the NSCA-800 catalyst exhibits outstanding long-term stability, its ORR kinetic current still retains 95.7% after a continuous 4 h test while that for commercial Pt/C retains just 74.3%. The sustainable biomass gelatin is a promising precursor for the development of carbon materials as effective ORR catalysts.

Biomass Juncus Derived Nitrogen-Doped Porous Carbon Materials for Supercapacitor and Oxygen Reduction Reaction.

Project description:Juncus is a perennial herb aquatic plant found worldwide, with high reproductive ability in warm regions. It has three-dimensional hierarchical porous triangular networks structures composited of tubular fibers. Here, juncus derived nitrogen-doped porous carbon (NDPC) was prepared by mixing juncus and ZnCl2 through one-step pyrolysis and activation which is a low-cost, simple, and environmentally friendly method. The NDPC had hierarchical porous structures and a high specific surface area and was applied for supercapacitor and oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). The resulted NDPC-3-800 was prepared by mixing juncus with ZnCl2 at a mass ratio of 1:3 and then carbonized at 800°C, it was used as electrode material of a supercapacitor. The supercapacitor exhibited excellent specific capacitance of 290.5 F g-1 and 175.0 F g-1 in alkaline electrolyte at the current densities of 0.5 A g-1 and 50 A g-1, respectively. The supercapacitor showed good cycle stability, and the capacitance was maintained at 94.5% after 10,000 cycles. The NDPC-5-800 was prepared by mixing juncus with ZnCl2 at a mass ratio of 1:5 and then carbonized at 800°C. It exhibited outstanding ORR catalytic activity and stability attributing to their high specific surface area and abundant actives sites. The juncus can derive various materials for application in different fields.

Highly efficient oxygen reduction electrocatalysts based on winged carbon nanotubes.

Project description:Developing electrocatalysts with both high selectivity and efficiency for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is critical for several applications including fuel cells and metal-air batteries. In this work we developed high performance electrocatalysts based on unique winged carbon nanotubes. We found that the outer-walls of a special type of carbon nanotubes/nanofibers, when selectively oxidized, unzipped and exfoliated, form graphene wings strongly attached to the inner tubes. After doping with nitrogen, the winged nanotubes exhibited outstanding activity toward catalyzing the ORR through the four-electron pathway with excellent stability and methanol/carbon monoxide tolerance. While the doped graphene wings with high active site density bring remarkable catalytic activity, the inner tubes remain intact and conductive to facilitate electron transport during electrocatalysis.

Nitrogen-doped carbon derived from horse manure biomass as a catalyst for the oxygen reduction reaction.

Project description:A massive amount of animal biomass is generated daily from livestock farms, agriculture, and food industries, causing environmental and ecological problems. The conversion of animal biomass into value-added products has recently gained considerable interest in materials science research. Herein, horse manure (HM) was utilized as a precursor for synthesizing nitrogen-doped carbons (NCs) via hydrothermal ammonia treatment and the post pyrolysis process. The ammonia concentration varied between 0.5, 1.0, and 1.5 M in the hydrothermal process. From the comprehensive characterization results, horse manure-derived nitrogen-doped carbons (HMNCs) exhibited an amorphous phase and a hierarchical nanoporous structure. The specific surface area decreased from 170.1 to 66.6 m2 g-1 as the ammonia concentration increased due to micropore deterioration. The nitrogen content was 0.90 atom% even with no ammonia treatment, indicating self-nitrogen doping. With hydrothermal ammonia treatment, the nitrogen content slightly enhanced up to 1.54 atom%. The electrocatalytic activity for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) of HMNCs in an alkaline solution was found to be related to nitrogen doping content and porous structure. The ORR activity of HMNCs mainly proceeded via a combination of two- and four-electron pathways. Although the ORR activity of HMNCs was still not satisfactory and comparable to that of a commercial Pt/carbon catalyst, it showed better long-term durability. The results obtained in this work provide the potential utilization of HM as a precursor for ORR catalysts and other related applications.

3D Melamine Sponge-Derived Cobalt Nanoparticle-Embedded N-Doped Carbon Nanocages as Efficient Electrocatalysts for the Oxygen Reduction Reaction.

Project description:The large-scale and controllable synthesis of novel N-doped three-dimensional (3D) carbon nanocage-decorated carbon skeleton sponges (Co-NCMS) is introduced. These Co-NCMS were highly active and durable non-noble metal catalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). This hybrid electrocatalyst showed high ORR activity with a diffusion-limiting current of 5.237 mA·cm-2 in 0.1 M KOH solution through the highly efficient 4e- pathway, which was superior to that of the Pt/C catalyst (4.99 mA·cm-2), and the ORR Tafel slope is ca. 67.7 mV·dec-1 at a high potential region, close to that of Pt/C. Furthermore, Co-NCMS exhibited good ORR activity in acidic media with an onset potential comparable to that of the Pt/C catalyst. Most importantly, the prepared catalyst showed much higher stability and better methanol tolerance in both alkaline and acidic solutions. The power density obtained in a proton exchange membrane fuel cell was as high as 0.37 W·cm-2 at 0.19 V compared with 0.45 W·cm-2 at 0.56 V for the Pt/C catalyst. In Co-NCMS, the N-doped carbon nanocages facilitated the diffusion of the reactant, maximizing the exposure of active sites on the surface and protecting the active metallic core from oxidation. This made Co-NCMS one of the best non-noble metal catalysts and potentially offers an alternative approach for the efficient utilization of active transition metals in electrocatalyst applications.

Cyanogel-Derived Synthesis of Porous PdFe Nanohydrangeas as Electrocatalysts for Oxygen Reduction Reaction.

Project description:It is important to develop cost-efficient electrocatalysts used in the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) for widespread applications in fuel cells. Palladium (Pd) is a promising catalyst, due to its more abundant reserves and lower price than platinum (Pt), and doping an earth-abundant 3d-transition metal M into Pd to form Pd-M bimetallic alloys may not only further reduce the use of expensive Pd but also promote the electrocatalytic performance of ORR, owing to the synergistic effect between Pd and M. Here we report a cyanogel-derived synthesis of PdFe alloys with porous nanostructure via a simple coinstantaneous reduction reaction by using K2PdIICl4/K4FeII(CN)6 cyanogel as precursor. The synthesized PdFe alloys possess hydrangea-like morphology and porous nanostructure, which are beneficial to the electrochemical performance in ORR. The onset potential of the porous PdFe nanohydrangeas is determined to be 0.988 V, which is much more positive than that of commercial Pt/C catalyst (0.976 V) and Pd black catalyst (0.964 V). Resulting from the unique structural advantages and synergetic effect between bimetals, the synthesized PdFe nanohydrangeas with porous structure have outstanding electrocatalytic activity and stability for ORR, compared with the commercial Pd black and Pt/C.

Carbon-Supported High-Loading Sub-4 nm PtCo Alloy Electrocatalysts for Superior Oxygen Reduction Reaction.

Project description:Increasing the loading density of nanoparticles on carbon support is essential for making Pt-alloy/C catalysts practical in H2-air fuel cells. The challenge lies in increasing the loading while suppressing the sintering of Pt-alloy nanoparticles. This work presents a 40% Pt-weighted sub-4 nm PtCo/C alloy catalyst via a simple incipient wetness impregnation method. By carefully optimizing the synthetic conditions such as Pt/Co ratios, calcination temperature, and time, the size of supported PtCo alloy nanoparticles is successfully controlled below 4 nm, and a high electrochemical surface area of 93.8 m2/g is achieved, which is 3.4 times that of commercial PtCo/C-TKK catalysts. Demonstrated by electrochemical oxygen reduction reactions, PtCo/C alloy catalysts present an enhanced mass activity of 0.465 A/mg at 0.9 V vs. RHE, which is 2.0 times that of the PtCo/C-TKK catalyst. Therefore, the developed PtCo/C alloy catalyst has the potential to be a highly practical catalyst for H2-air fuel cells.
