Revisiting van der Waals Radii: From Comprehensive Structural Analysis to Knowledge-Based Classification of Interatomic Contacts.

ABSTRACT: Weak noncovalent interactions are responsible for structure and properties of almost all supramolecular systems, such as nucleic acids, enzymes, and pharmaceutical crystals. However, the analysis of their significance and structural role is not straightforward and commonly requires model studies. Herein, we describe an efficient and universal approach for the analysis of noncovalent interactions and determination of van der Waals radii using the line-of-sight (LoS) concept. The LoS allows to unambiguously identify and classify the "direct" interatomic contacts in complex molecular systems. This approach not only provides an improved theoretical base to molecular "sizes" but also enables the quantitative analysis of specificity, anisotropy, and steric effects of intermolecular interactions.

Universal Pairwise Interatomic van der Waals Potentials Based on Quantum Drude Oscillators.

Project description:Repulsive short-range and attractive long-range van der Waals (vdW) forces play an appreciable role in the behavior of extended molecular systems. When using empirical force fields, the most popular computational methods applied to such systems, vdW forces are typically described by Lennard-Jones-like potentials, which unfortunately have a limited predictive power. Here, we present a universal parameterization of a quantum-mechanical vdW potential, which requires only two free-atom properties─the static dipole polarizability α1 and the dipole-dipole C6 dispersion coefficient. This is achieved by deriving the functional form of the potential from the quantum Drude oscillator (QDO) model, employing scaling laws for the equilibrium distance and the binding energy, and applying the microscopic law of corresponding states. The vdW-QDO potential is shown to be accurate for vdW binding energy curves, as demonstrated by comparing to the ab initio binding curves of 21 noble-gas dimers. The functional form of the vdW-QDO potential has the correct asymptotic behavior at both zero and infinite distances. In addition, it is shown that the damped vdW-QDO potential can accurately describe vdW interactions in dimers consisting of group II elements. Finally, we demonstrate the applicability of the atom-in-molecule vdW-QDO model for predicting accurate dispersion energies for molecular systems. The present work makes an important step toward constructing universal vdW potentials, which could benefit (bio)molecular computational studies.

Experimental Quantification of Halogen⋅⋅⋅Arene van der Waals Contacts.

Project description:Crystallographic and computational studies suggest the occurrence of favourable interactions between polarizable arenes and halogen atoms. However, the systematic experimental quantification of halogen⋅⋅⋅arene interactions in solution has been hindered by the large variance in the steric demands of the halogens. Here we have synthesized molecular balances to quantify halogen⋅⋅⋅arene contacts in 17 solvents and solvent mixtures using 1 H NMR spectroscopy. Calculations indicate that favourable halogen⋅⋅⋅arene interactions arise from London dispersion in the gas phase. In contrast, comparison of our experimental measurements with partitioned SAPT0 energies indicate that dispersion is sufficiently attenuated by the solvent that the halogen⋅⋅⋅arene interaction trend was instead aligned with increasing exchange repulsion as the halogen increased in size (ΔGX ⋅⋅⋅Ph =0 to +1.5 kJ mol-1 ). Halogen⋅⋅⋅arene contacts were slightly less disfavoured in solvents with higher solvophobicities and lower polarizabilities, but strikingly, were always less favoured than CH3 ⋅⋅⋅arene contacts (ΔGMe ⋅⋅⋅Ph =0 to -1.4 kJ mol-1 ).

van der Waals Radii of Free and Bonded Atoms from Hydrogen (Z = 1) to Oganesson (Z = 118).

Project description:Reliable numerical values of van der Waals (vdW) radii are required for constructing empirical force fields, vdW-inclusive density functional, and quantum-chemical methods, as well as for implicit solvent models. However, multiple definitions exist for vdW radii, involving either equilibrium or the closest contact distances between free or bonded atoms within molecules or crystals. For the paradigmatic case of the hydrogen atom, its reported vdW radius fluctuates between 2.15 and 3.70 Bohr depending on the definition, leading to a high uncertainty in calculations and different conceptual interpretations of noncovalent interactions. In this work, we systematically review different definitions and methodologies to establish the free and bonded vdW radii for hydrogen, based on equilibrium vdW distances in noncovalently bonded molecules, enveloping electron density cutoffs, noncovalent positron bonds in hydrogen anion dimer, vacuum virtual photon cloud caused by the hydrogen atom, and atomic dipole polarizability. By doing so, we show that the vdW radius of the free hydrogen atom is 3.16 ± 0.06 Bohr. By employing the most general and elegant definition of atomic vdW radius as a function of the atomic polarizability, we tabulate consistent values of vdW radii for all atoms in the periodic table up to Z = 118.

Indium-contacted van der Waals gap tunneling spectroscopy for van der Waals layered materials.

Project description:The electrical phase transition in van der Waals (vdW) layered materials such as transition-metal dichalcogenides and Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+x (Bi-2212) high-temperature superconductor has been explored using various techniques, including scanning tunneling and photoemission spectroscopies, and measurements of electrical resistance as a function of temperature. In this study, we develop one useful method to elucidate the electrical phases in vdW layered materials: indium (In)-contacted vdW tunneling spectroscopy for 1T-TaS2, Bi-2212 and 2H-MoS2. We utilized the vdW gap formed at an In/vdW material interface as a tunnel barrier for tunneling spectroscopy. For strongly correlated electron systems such as 1T-TaS2 and Bi-2212, pronounced gap features corresponding to the Mott and superconducting gaps were respectively observed at T = 4 K. We observed a gate dependence of the amplitude of the superconducting gap, which has potential applications in a gate-tunable superconducting device with a SiO2/Si substrate. For In/10 nm-thick 2H-MoS2 devices, differential conductance shoulders at bias voltages of approximately ± 0.45 V were observed, which were attributed to the semiconducting gap. These results show that In-contacted vdW gap tunneling spectroscopy in a fashion of field-effect transistor provides feasible and reliable ways to investigate electronic structures of vdW materials.

Metal Films on Two-Dimensional Materials: van der Waals Contacts and Raman Enhancement.

Project description:Electronic devices based on two-dimensional (2D) materials will need ultraclean and defect-free van der Waals (vdW) contacts with three-dimensional (3D) metals. It is therefore important to understand how vdW metal films deposit on 2D surfaces. Here, we study the growth and nucleation of vdW metal films of indium (In) and non-vdW metal films of gold (Au), deposited on 2D MoS2 and graphene. In follows a 2D growth mode in contrast to Au that follows a 3D growth mode. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were used to image the morphology of metal clusters during growth and quantify the nucleation density. As compared to Au, In atoms exhibit nearly 50 times higher diffusivity (3.65 × 10-6 μm-2 s-1) and half the nucleation density (64.9 ± 2.46 μm-2), leading to larger grain sizes (∼60 nm for 5 nm In on monolayer MoS2). The grain size of In can be further increased by reducing the 2D surface roughness, while the grain size for Au is limited by its high nucleation density due to the creation of interface defects during deposition. The vdW gap between In and MoS2 and graphene leads to strong enhancement (>103) in their Raman signal intensity due to localized surface plasmon resonance. In the absence of a vdW gap, the plasmon-mediated enhancement in Raman does not occur.

Two-Dimensional Phototransistors with van der Waals Superstructure Contacts for High-Performance Photosensing.

Project description:Semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) possess exceptional photoelectronic properties, rendering them excellent channel materials for phototransistors and holding great promise for future optoelectronics. However, the attainment of high-performance photodetection has been impeded by challenges pertaining to electrical contact. To surmount this obstacle, we introduce a phototransistor architecture, in which the WS2 channel is connected with an alternating WS2-WSe2 strip superstructure, strategically positioned alongside the source and drain contact regions. Illumination triggers efficient separation of photoexcited electrons and holes due to the type-II staggered band alignment within the superstructure. Consequently, the contact regions exhibit degenerately doped n+ WS2 and p+ WSe2 strips under light illumination, resulting in minimal contact resistivity with the metal electrodes. The resultant WS2 phototransistor exhibits a remarkable responsivity of 2.4 × 106 mA/W and an impressive detectivity of 2.6 × 1012 Jones. Furthermore, our time-resolved measurements reveal the absence of persistent photoconductance. This proposed phototransistor architecture provides a route for high-performance photodetection, effectively surpassing previous limitations associated with electrical contact.

Reconfiguring van der Waals Metal-Semiconductor Contacts via Selenium Intercalation/Deintercalation Post-Treatment.

Project description:To achieve the commercialization of two-dimensional (2D) semiconductors, the identification of an appropriate combination of 2D semiconductors and three-dimensional (3D) metals is crucial. Furthermore, understanding the van der Waals (vdW) interactions between these materials in thin-film semiconductor processes is essential. Optimizing these interactions requires precise control over the properties of the vdW interface through specific pre- or post-treatment methods. This study utilizes Se-environment annealing as a post-treatment technique, which allows for modification of the vdW gap distance and enhancement of the stability of the interfacial structure through the process of Se intercalation and deintercalation at the 2D-3D interface. The depth of Se intercalation and deintercalation is adjusted by varying the temperature and duration of the postannealing process in an Se environment. This precise control over the process enables the effective metallization of 2D semiconductors. The results indicate that expanding the vdW gap and stabilizing the interface structure through this post-treatment significantly improve the metal contact properties in devices such as field-effect transistors and photovoltaic Schottky diodes by minimizing metal-induced gap states, thus reducing Fermi level pinning. The application of Se intercalation and deintercalation techniques achieves an exceptionally low contact resistance of 773 Ω·μm between p-type WSe2 and Au. Additionally, the integration of doping-free WSe2 complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) circuits using Se-environment annealing and blocking layers is demonstrated, establishing a promising advancement in semiconductor technology.

Controlling Injection Barriers for Ambipolar 2D Semiconductors via Quasi-van der Waals Contacts.

Project description:Barriers that charge carriers experience while injecting into channels play a crucial role on determining the device properties of van der Waals semiconductors (vdWS). Among various strategies to control these barriers, inserting a graphene layer underneath bulk metal may be a promising choice, which is still lacking experimental verification. Here, it is demonstrated that graphene/metal hybrid structures can form quasi-van der Waals contacts (q-vdWC) to ambipolar vdWS, combining the advantages of individual metal and graphene contacts together. A new analysis model is adopted to define the barriers and to extract the barrier heights in ambipolar vdWS. The devices with q-vdWC show significantly reduced Schottky barrier heights and thermionic field emission activation energies, ability of screening the influence from substrate, and Fermi level unpinning effect. Furthermore, phototransistors with these special contacts exhibit enhanced performances. The proposed graphene/metal q-vdWC may be an effective strategy to approach the Schottky-Mott limit for vdWS.

0D van der Waals interfacial ferroelectricity.

Project description:The dimensional limit of ferroelectricity has been long explored. The critical contravention is that the downscaling of ferroelectricity leads to a loss of polarization. This work demonstrates a zero-dimensional ferroelectricity by the atomic sliding at the restrained van der Waals interface of crossed tungsten disufilde nanotubes. The developed zero-dimensional ferroelectric diode in this work presents not only non-volatile resistive memory, but also the programmable photovoltaic effect at the visible band. Benefiting from the intrinsic dimensional limitation, the zero-dimensional ferroelectric diode allows electrical operation at an ultra-low current. By breaking through the critical size of depolarization, this work demonstrates the ultimately downscaled interfacial ferroelectricity of zero-dimensional, and contributes to a branch of devices that integrates zero-dimensional ferroelectric memory, nano electro-mechanical system, and programmable photovoltaics in one.

Van der Waals ferromagnetic Josephson junctions.

Project description:Superconductor-ferromagnet interfaces in two-dimensional heterostructures present a unique opportunity to study the interplay between superconductivity and ferromagnetism. The realization of such nanoscale heterostructures in van der Waals (vdW) crystals remains largely unexplored due to the challenge of making atomically-sharp interfaces from their layered structures. Here, we build a vdW ferromagnetic Josephson junction (JJ) by inserting a few-layer ferromagnetic insulator Cr2Ge2Te6 into two layers of superconductor NbSe2. The critical current and corresponding junction resistance exhibit a hysteretic and oscillatory behavior against in-plane magnetic fields, manifesting itself as a strong Josephson coupling state. Also, we observe a central minimum of critical current in some JJ devices as well as a nontrivial phase shift in SQUID structures, evidencing the coexistence of 0 and π phase in the junction region. Our study paves the way to exploring sensitive probes of weak magnetism and multifunctional building-blocks for phase-related superconducting circuits using vdW heterostructures.
