Facile Synthesis of Monodispersed Ag NPs in Ethylene Glycol Using Mixed Capping Agents.

ABSTRACT: Capping agents play an important role in the synthesis of silver nanostructures in polyol solvents. In this work, we demonstrate that using a small amount of tannic acid (TA), a reducing capping agent, in addition to poly(vinylpyrrolidone) (PVP), a protective capping agent, can lead to the production of monodisperse spherical silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) that are stable with respect to particle aggregation for at least 100 days and have particle sizes ranging from 16 to 28 nm depending on the TA concentration. We hypothesize that the complexation between PVP and TA can lead to the formation of a stable particle coating and a fast Ag⁺ reduction rate at a relatively high TA concentration. Both effects can benefit the formation of small spherical Ag NPs with narrow size distribution.

Facile Morphology-Controlled Synthesis of Organolead Iodide Perovskite Nanocrystals Using Binary Capping Agents.

Project description:Controlling the morphology of organolead halide perovskite crystals is crucial to a fundamental understanding of the materials and to tune their properties for device applications. Here, we report a facile solution-based method for morphology-controlled synthesis of rod-like and plate-like organolead halide perovskite nanocrystals using binary capping agents. The morphology control is likely due to an interplay between surface binding kinetics of the two capping agents at different crystal facets. By high-resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy, we show that the obtained nanocrystals are monocrystalline. Moreover, long photoluminescence decay times of the nanocrystals indicate long charge diffusion lengths and low trap/defect densities. Our results pave the way for large-scale solution synthesis of organolead halide perovskite nanocrystals with controlled morphology for future device applications.

Facile synthesis of 1.3 nm monodispersed Ag nanoclusters in an aqueous solution and their antibacterial activities for <i>E. coli</i>.

Project description:A facile one-pot strategy was developed to prepare ultrastable monodispersed Ag nanoclusters (NCs) in aqueous solution by using ISOBAM-104, as a stabilizing agent. The as-prepared Ag NCs with an average size of 1.3 nm, which can be preserved in water solution for more than one year under ambient conditions without obvious agglomeration, exhibited excellent antibacterial activities for E. coli (DH5α), compared to most of the previously reported results.

Solid-State Green Synthesis of Ag NPs: Higher Temperature Harvests Larger Ag NPs but Smaller Size Has Better Catalytic Reduction Reaction.

Project description:In this work a novel solid-state green approach without using any solvent environment has been proposed to synthesize Ag NPs. The synthetic condition has been investigated in 4 °C, 20 °C, 40 °C and 60 °C and at ten different time intervals. This synthesis process gives different size and shape of curcumin conjugated Ag NPs, which have been confirmed by various morphological and spectroscopic techniques. It is found that higher temperature and longer time produces larger particles size and different varieties in shapes. For example, Ag NPs prepared at 4 °C are spherical shapes whereas that prepared at 60 °C are of spherical, rods, and many hexagonal shapes. At 60 °C and after 5 and 7 days the size of the prepared Ag NPs exceed the nano scale to reach micro scale level. This size and shape distribution are well reflected in the optical properties as absorbance, fluorescence intensity and SFS intensity of Ag NPs consistently increase with increase in temperature during synthesis. Ag NPs obtained in different temperature and various time intervals have been subsequently tested as catalysts for the reduction reaction, where 4-nitrophenol is reduced to 4-aminophenol in the presence of NaBH4. It is found that smaller particles have better catalytic properties for the reduction reaction.

Synthesis of Monodispersed Ag-Doped Bioactive Glass Nanoparticles via Surface Modification.

Project description:Monodispersed spherical Ag-doped bioactive glass nanoparticles (Ag-BGNs) were synthesized by a modified Stöber method combined with surface modification. The surface modification was carried out at 25, 60, and 80 °C, respectively, to investigate the influence of processing temperature on particle properties. Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) results indicated that higher temperatures facilitate the incorporation of Ag. Hydroxyapatite (HA) formation on Ag-BGNs was detected upon immersion of the particles in simulated body fluid for 7 days, which indicated that Ag-BGNs maintained high bioactivity after surface modification. The conducted antibacterial assay confirmed that Ag-BGNs had an antibacterial effect on E. coli. The above results thereby suggest that surface modification is an effective way to incorporate Ag into BGNs and that the modified BGNs can remain monodispersed as well as exhibit bioactivity and antibacterial capability for biomedical applications.

Adaptable poly(ethylene glycol) microspheres capable of mixed-mode degradation.

Project description:A simple, degradable poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) microsphere system formed from a water-in-water emulsion process is presented. Microsphere network degradation and erosion were controlled by adjusting the number of hydrolytically labile sites, by varying the PEG molecular weight, and by adjusting the emulsion conditions. Microsphere size was also controllable by adjusting the polymer formulation. Furthermore, it is demonstrated that alternative degradation and erosion mechanisms, such as proteolytic degradation, can be incorporated into PEG microspheres, resulting in mixed-mode degradation. Owing to the adaptability of this approach, it may serve as an attractive option for emerging tissue engineering, drug delivery and gene delivery applications.

Physicochemical characteristics of pH-sensitive poly(L-histidine)-b-poly(ethylene glycol)/poly(L-lactide)-b-poly(ethylene glycol) mixed micelles.

Project description:A novel pH-sensitive polymeric micellar system composed of poly(L-histidine)-b-poly(ethylene glycol) and poly(L-lactide)-b-poly(ethylene glycol) block copolymers was studied by dynamic/static light scattering, spectrofluorimetry and differential scanning calorimetry. The mixed micelles displayed ultra Ph Sensitivity Which Could Be Tuned By Varying The Mixing Ratio Of The Two Polymers. In Particular, Mixed Micelles Composed Of 25 Wt.% Poly(L-lactide)-b-poly(ethylene glycol) exhibited desirable pH dependency which could be used as a drug delivery system that selectively targeted the extracellular pH of acidic solid tumors. Micelles were quite stable from pH 7.4 to 7.0 but underwent a two-stage destabilization as pH decreased further. A significant increase in size and aggregation number was observed when pH dropped to 6.8. Further disruption of the micelle core eventually caused phase separation in the micelle core and dissociation of ionized poly(L-histidine)-b-poly(ethylene glycol) molecules from the micelles as pH decreased to 6.0. Increased electrostatic repulsions which arise from the progressive protonation of imidazole rings overwhelming the hydrophobic interactions among uncharged neutral blocks is considered to be the mechanism for destabilization of the micelle core.

The Synthesis of α-MoO₃ by Ethylene Glycol.

Project description:This study investigated the use of ethylene glycol to form α-MoO₃ (molybdenum trioxide) from ammonium molybdate tetrahydrate at various sintering temperatures for 1 h. During the sintering process, the morphologies of the constituents were observed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy was used to explain the reaction process. In this work, the results obtained using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XRD) demonstrated that, when the molybdenum trioxide powder was treated thermally at 300 °C, the material exhibited crystallinity. The peaks were indexed to correspond with the (110), (040), (021), (111), and (060) crystallographic planes, and the lattice parameters of a, b, and c were about 3.961, 13.876, and 3.969 Å. Using these observations, we confirmed that orthorhombic α-MoO₃ was formed for sintering temperatures from 300 to 700 °C. Pattern images were obtained by the selected area electron diffraction pattern (SAED) technique, and the d distance of the high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) images were almost 0.39 and 0.36 nm, and the Mo 3d5/2, Mo 3d3/2, and O 1s of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) were located at 233.76, 237.03, and 532.19 eV, which also demonstrated that α-MoO₃ powder had been synthesized.

Combined Facile Synthesis, Purification, and Surface Functionalization Approach Yields Monodispersed Gold Nanorods for Drug Delivery Applications.

Project description:Synthesizing gold nanorods (AuNRs) by seed-mediated growth method results in the presence of undesired size and shape particles by-products occupying 10-90% of the population. In this study, AuNRs are synthesized by the seed-mediated growth method using cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) as a surfactant. AuNRs with redshifted longitudinal localized surface plasmon resonance (LLSPR) peak, localized in the biological "transparency window" (650-1350 nm), are synthesized after optimizing seed solution, silver nitrate solution, and hydrochloric acid solution volumes, based on the published protocols. A two-step purification method, dialysis followed by centrifugation, is applied to remove excess CTAB and collect LLSPR-redshifted AuNRs with high rod purity (>90%). CTAB is subsequently exchanged with polyethylene glycol (PEG) to improve AuNRs biocompatibility. PEGylated AuNRs are confirmed innocuous to both SN4741 cells and B16F10 cells by the modified MTT assay and the modified lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) assay up to 1 nm and 24 h incubation. In this study, a combined facile synthesis, purification, and surface functionalization approach is proposed to obtain water-dispersible monodispersed AuNRs for drug delivery applications.

Highly fluorescent hybrid Au/Ag nanoclusters stabilized with poly(ethylene glycol)- and zwitterion-modified thiolate ligands.

Project description:We report a simple strategy to grow highly fluorescing, near-infrared-emitting nanoclusters (NCs) made of bimetallic Au/Ag cores, surface capped with a mixture of triphenylphosphine and various monothiol ligands. The ligands include short chain aliphatic monothiols, which yields hydrophobic NCs, and poly(ethylene glycol)- or zwitterion-appended monothiols, which yield NCs that are readily dispersible in buffer media. The reaction uses well-defined triphenylphosphine-protected Au11 clusters (as precursors) that are reacted with Ag(i)-thiolate complexes. The prepared materials are small (diameter <2 nm, as characterized by TEM) with emission peak at 730-760 nm and long lifetime (∼8-12 μs). The quantum yield measured for these materials in both hydrophobic and hydrophilic dispersions is ∼40%. High-magnification dark field STEM and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy measurements show the presence of both metal atoms in the core, with measured binding energies that agree with reported values for nanocluster materials. The NIR emission combined with high quantum yield, small size, colloidal stability in buffer media and ease of surface functionalization afforded by the coating, make these materials suitable for investigating fundamental questions and potentially useful for biological sensing and imaging applications.

Structure and DNA hybridization properties of mixed nucleic acid/maleimide-ethylene glycol monolayers.

Project description:The surface structure and DNA hybridization performance of thiolated single-strand DNA (HS-ssDNA) covalently attached to a maleimide-ethylene glycol disulfide (MEG) monolayer on gold have been investigated. Monolayer immobilization chemistry and surface coverage of reactive ssDNA probes were studied by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry. Orientation of the ssDNA probes was determined by near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS). Target DNA hybridization on the DNA-MEG probe surfaces was measured by surface plasmon resonance (SPR) to demonstrate the utility of these probe surfaces for detection of DNA targets from both purified target DNA samples and complex biological mixtures such as blood serum. Data from complementary techniques showed that immobilized ssDNA density is strongly dependent on the spotted bulk DNA concentration and buffer ionic strength. Variation of the immobilized ssDNA density had a profound influence on the DNA probe orientation at the surface and subsequent target hybridization efficiency. With increasing surface probe density, NEXAFS polarization dependence results (followed by monitoring the N 1s --> pi* transition) indicate that the immobilized ssDNA molecules reorient toward a more upright position on the MEG monolayer. SPR assays of DNA targets from buffer and serum showed that DNA hybridization efficiency increased with decreasing surface probe density. However, target detection in serum was better on the "high-density" probe surface than on the "high-efficiency" probe surface. The amounts of target detected for both ssDNA surfaces were several orders of magnitude poorer in serum than in purified DNA samples due to nonspecific serum protein adsorption onto the sensing surface.
