Structure and chemistry of graphene oxide in liquid water from first principles.

ABSTRACT: Graphene oxide is a rising star among 2D materials, yet its interaction with liquid water remains a fundamentally open question: experimental characterization at the atomic scale is difficult, and modeling by classical approaches cannot properly describe chemical reactivity. Here, we bridge the gap between simple computational models and complex experimental systems, by realistic first-principles molecular simulations of graphene oxide (GO) in liquid water. We construct chemically accurate GO models and study their behavior in water, showing that oxygen-bearing functional groups (hydroxyl and epoxides) are preferentially clustered on the graphene oxide layer. We demonstrated the specific properties of GO in water, an unusual combination of both hydrophilicity and fast water dynamics. Finally, we evidence that GO is chemically active in water, acquiring an average negative charge of the order of 10 mC m^-2. The ab initio modeling highlights the uniqueness of GO structures for applications as innovative membranes for desalination and water purification.

Project description:Atomic layer deposition (ALD) of zinc oxide thin films has been under intense research in the past few years. The most common precursors used in this process are diethyl zinc (DEZ) and water. The surface chemistry related to the growth of a zinc oxide thin film via atomic layer deposition is not entirely clear, and the ideal model of the process has been contradicted by experimental data, e.g., the incomplete elimination of the ethyl ligands from the surface and the non-negative mass change during the water pulse. In this work we investigate the surface reactions of water during the atomic layer deposition of zinc oxide. The adsorption and ligand-exchange reactions of water are studied on ethyl-saturated surface structures to grasp the relevant surface chemistry contributing to the deposition process. The complex ethyl-saturated surface structures are adopted from a previous publication on the DEZ/H2O-process, and different configurations are sampled using ab initio molecular dynamics in order to find a suitable minimum structure. Water molecules are found to adsorb exothermically onto the ethyl-covered surface at all the ethyl concentrations considered. We do not observe an adsorption barrier for water at 0 K; however, the adsorption energy for any additional water molecules decreases rapidly at high ethyl concentrations. Ligand-exchange reactions are studied at various surface ethyl coverages. The water pulse ligand-exchange reactions have overall larger activation energies than surface reactions for diethyl zinc pulse. For some of the configurations considered, the reaction barriers may be inaccessible at the process conditions, suggesting that some ligands may be inert toward ligand-exchange with water. The activation energies for the surface reactions show only a weak dependence on the surface ethyl concentration. The sensitivity of the adsorption of water at high ethyl coverages suggests that at high ligand-coverages the kinetics may be somewhat hindered due to steric effects. Calculations on the ethyl-covered surfaces are compared to a simple model containing a single monoethyl zinc group. The calculated activation energy for this model is in line with calculations done on the complex model, but the adsorption of water is poorly described. The weak adsorption bond onto a single monoethyl zinc is probably due to a cooperative effect between the surface zinc atoms. A cooperative effect between water molecules is also observed; however, the effect on the activation energies is not as significant as has been reported for other ALD processes.

Project description:Controlling the structure of graphene oxide (GO) phases and their smaller analogues, graphene (oxide) quantum dots (GOQDs), is vitally important for any of their widespread intended applications: highly ordered arrangements of nanoparticles for thin-film or membrane applications of GO, dispersed nanoparticles for composite materials and three-dimensional porous arrangements for hydrogels. In aqueous environments, it is not only the chemical composition of the GO flakes that determines their morphologies; external factors such as pH and the coexisting cations also influence the structures formed. By using accurate models of GO that capture the heterogeneity of surface oxidation and very large-scale coarse-grained molecular dynamics that can simulate the behaviour of GO at realistic sizes of GOQDs, the driving forces that lead to the various morphologies in aqueous solution are resolved. We find the morphologies are determined by a complex interplay between electrostatic, [Formula: see text]-[Formula: see text] and hydrogen bonding interactions. Assembled morphologies can be controlled by changing the degree of oxidation and the pH. In acidic aqueous solution, the GO flakes vary from fully aggregated over graphitic domains to partial aggregation via hydrogen bonding between hydroxylated domains, leading to the formation of planar extended flakes at high oxidation ratios and stacks at low oxidation ratios. At high pH, where the edge carboxylic acid groups are deprotonated, electrostatic repulsion leads to more dispersion, but a variety of aggregation behaviour is surprisingly still observed: over graphitic regions, via hydrogen bonding and "face-edge" interactions. Calcium ions cause additional aggregation, with a greater number of "face-face" and "edge-edge" aggregation mechanisms, leading to irregular aggregated structures. "Face-face" aggregation mechanisms are enhanced by the GO flakes possessing distinct domains of hydroxylated and graphitic regions, with [Formula: see text]-[Formula: see text] and hydrogen bonding interactions prevalent between these regions on aggregated flakes respectively. These findings furnish explanations for the aggregation characteristics of GO and GOQDs, and provide computational methods to design directed synthesis routes for self-assembled and associated applications.
