Early mortality syndrome (EMS) in cultivated shrimp is of complex aetiology. One of the causes is acute hepatopancreatic necrosis disease (AHPND) caused by unique Vibrio isolates that carry two Pir<sup>vp</sup> toxin genes, but other causes of EMS remain mostly unexplained.
