Lubricated friction around nanodefects.

ABSTRACT: The lubrication properties of nanoconfined liquids underpin countless natural and industrial processes. However, our current understanding of lubricated friction is still limited, especially for nonideal interfaces exhibiting nanoscale chemical and topographical defects. Here, we use atomic force microscopy to explore the equilibrium and dynamical behavior of a model lubricant, squalane, confined between a diamond tip and graphite in the vicinity of an atomic step. We combine high-resolution imaging of the interface with highly localized shear measurements at different velocities and temperatures to derive a quantitative picture of the lubricated friction around surface defects. We show that defects tend to promote local molecular order and increase friction forces by reducing the number of stable molecular configurations in their immediate vicinity. The effect is general, can propagate over hundreds of nanometers, and can be quantitatively described by a semiempirical model that bridges the molecular details and mesoscale observations.

Molecular Probing of the Stress Activation Volume in Vapor Phase Lubricated Friction.

Project description:When two solid objects slide over each other, friction results from the interactions between the asperities of the (invariably rough) surfaces. Lubrication happens when viscous lubricants separate the two surfaces and carry the load such that solid-on-solid contacts are avoided. Yet, even small amounts of low-viscosity lubricants can still significantly lower friction through a process called boundary lubrication. Understanding the origin of the boundary lubricating effect is hampered by challenges in measuring the interfacial properties of lubricants directly between the two surfaces. Here, we use rigidochromic fluorescent probe molecules to measure precisely what happens on a molecular scale during vapor-phase boundary lubrication of a polymer bead-on-glass interface. The probe molecules have a longer fluorescence lifetime in a confined environment, which allows one to measure the area of real contact between rough surfaces and infer the shear stress at the lubricated interfaces. The latter is shown to be proportional to the inverse of the local interfacial free volume determined using the measured fluorescence lifetime. The free volume can then be used in an Eyring-type model as the stress activation volume, allowing to collapse the data of stress as a function of sliding velocity and partial pressure of the vapor phase lubricant. This shows directly that as more boundary lubricant is applied, larger clusters of lubricant molecules become involved in the shear process thereby lowering the friction.

Macroscopic Superlow Friction of Steel and Diamond-Like Carbon Lubricated with a Formanisotropic 1,3-Diketone.

Project description:Energy dissipation due to friction and wear is reducing the energy efficiency and reliability of mechanical systems. Thus, great efforts are being made to minimize friction for technical applications. In our present work, we investigate the tribological behavior of stainless steel 100Cr6 with a-C:H and a-C:H:Si coating lubricated with a surface-active formanisotropic 1,3-diketone. The results show that superlow friction can be achieved on the macroscale using a steel 100Cr6 self pairing (COF ∼ 0.005) and with 100Cr6 in combination with a-C:H coating (COF ∼ 0.008). Furthermore, the replacement of steel with a-C:H coating leads to a considerable decrease of wear. The reduced COF arises from the chemical interaction of the lubricant with the surface and nascent iron ions. It was found that interfacial parameters correlate with tribological results. In addition, the alignment of the formanisotropic molecules in the tribological contact at thin-film lubrication leads to an anisotropic viscosity with a minimum shear resistance in sliding direction. Atomistic simulation of tribochemical interactions was conducted to derive a friction model based on the thin-film lubrication theory. This investigation indicates the potential to substantially reduce friction and wear using this fluid in real technical applications.

Super-Low Friction Electrification Achieved on Polytetrafluoroethylene Films-Based Triboelectric Nanogenerators Lubricated by Graphene-Doped Silicone Oil.

Project description:The novel proposal of Wang's triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) has inspired extensive efforts to explore energy harvesting devices from the living environment for the upcoming low-carbon society. The inevitable friction and wear problems of the tribolayer materials become one of the biggest obstacles for attaining high-performance TENGs. To achieve super-low friction electrification of the TENGs, the tribological and electrical behaviors of the sliding-mode TENGs based on polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) films and metallic balls under both dry friction and liquid lubrication conditions were investigated by using a customized testing platform with a ball-on-flat configuration. Most interestingly, a super-low friction coefficient of 0.008 was achieved under graphene-doped silicone oil lubrication. The corresponding wear rate of the PTFE film was drastically decreased to 8.19 × 10-5 mm3/Nm. Simultaneously, the output short-circuit current and open-circuit voltage were enhanced by 6.8 times and 3.0 times, respectively, compared to the dry friction condition. The outstanding triboelectrical performances of the PTFE film when sliding against a steel ball are attributed to the synergistic lubricating effects of the silicone oil and the graphene nanosheets. The current research provides valuable insights into achieving the macro-scale superlubricity of the TENGs in practical industrial applications.

Mechanical behaviour of fluid-lubricated faults.

Project description:Fluids are pervasive in fault zones cutting the Earth's crust; however, the effect of fluid viscosity on fault mechanics is mainly conjectured by theoretical models. We present friction experiments performed on both dry and fluid-permeated silicate and carbonate bearing-rocks, at normal effective stresses up to 20 MPa, with a slip-rate ranging between 10 μm/s and 1 m/s. Four different fluid viscosities were tested. We show that both static and dynamic friction coefficients decrease with viscosity and that dynamic friction depends on the dimensionless Sommerfeld number (S) as predicted by the elastohydrodynamic-lubrication theory (EHD).Under favourable conditions (depending on the fluid viscosity (η), co-seismic slip-rate (V), fault geometry (L/H02) and earthquake nucleation depth (∝σeff)), EHD might be an effective weakening mechanism during natural and induced earthquakes. However, at seismic slip-rate, the slip weakening distance (Dc) increases markedly for a range of fluid viscosities expected in the Earth, potentially favouring slow-slip rather than rupture propagation for small to moderate earthquakes.

Shear-responsive boundary-lubricated hydrogels attenuate osteoarthritis.

Project description:Lipid-based boundary layers formed on liposome-containing hydrogels can facilitate lubrication. However, these boundary layers can be damaged by shear, resulting in decreased lubrication. Here, a shear-responsive boundary-lubricated drug-loaded hydrogel is created by incorporating celecoxib (CLX)-loaded liposomes within dynamic covalent bond-based hyaluronic acid (HA) hydrogels (CLX@Lipo@HA-gel). The dynamic cross-linked network enables the hydrogel to get restructured in response to shear, and the HA matrix allows the accumulation of internal liposome microreservoirs on the sliding surfaces, which results in the formation of boundary layers to provide stable lubrication. Moreover, hydration shells formed surrounding the hydrogel can retard the degradation process, thus helping in sustaining lubrication. Furthermore, in vitro and in vivo experiments found that CLX@Lipo@HA-gels can maintain anabolic-catabolic balance, alleviate cartilage wear, and attenuate osteoarthritis progression by delivering CLX and shear-responsive boundary lubrication. Overall, CLX@Lipo@HA-gels can serve as shear-responsive boundary lubricants and drug-delivery vehicles to alleviate friction-related diseases like osteoarthritis.

Ancient origin of lubricated joints in bony vertebrates.

Project description:Synovial joints are the lubricated connections between the bones of our body that are commonly affected in arthritis. It is assumed that synovial joints first evolved as vertebrates came to land, with ray-finned fishes lacking lubricated joints. Here, we examine the expression and function of a critical lubricating protein of mammalian synovial joints, Prg4/Lubricin, in diverse ray-finned fishes. We find that Prg4 homologs are specifically enriched at the jaw and pectoral fin joints of zebrafish, stickleback, and gar, with genetic deletion of the zebrafish prg4b gene resulting in the same age-related degeneration of joints as seen in lubricin-deficient mice and humans. Our data support lubricated synovial joints evolving much earlier than currently accepted, at least in the common ancestor of all bony vertebrates. Establishment of the first arthritis model in the highly regenerative zebrafish will offer unique opportunities to understand the aetiology and possible treatment of synovial joint disease.

Self-adhesive lubricated coating for enhanced bacterial resistance.

Project description:Limited surface lubrication and bacterial biofilm formation pose great challenges to biomedical implants. Although hydrophilic lubricated coatings and bacterial resistance coatings have been reported, the harsh and tedious synthesis greatly compromises their application, and more importantly, the bacterial resistance property has seldom been investigated in combination with the lubrication property. In this study, bioinspired by the performances of mussel and articular cartilage, we successfully synthesized self-adhesive lubricated coating and simultaneously achieved optimal lubrication and bacterial resistance properties. Additionally, we reported the mechanism of bacterial resistance on the nanoscale by studying the adhesion interactions between biomimetic coating and hydrophilic/hydrophobic tip or living bacteria via atomic force microscopy. In summary, the self-adhesive lubricated coating can effectively enhance lubrication and bacterial resistance performances based on hydration lubrication and hydration repulsion, and represent a universal and facial strategy for surface functionalization of biomedical implants.

Durability of Lubricated Icephobic Coatings under Various Environmental Stresses.

Project description:Icephobic coatings interest various industries facing icing problems. However, their durability represents a current limitation in real applications. Therefore, understanding the degradation of coatings under various environmental stresses is necessary for further coating development. Here, lubricated icephobic coatings were fabricated using a flame spray method with hybrid feedstock injection. Low-density polyethylene represented the main coating component. Two additives, namely fully hydrogenated cottonseed oil and paraffinic wax, were added to the coating structure to enhance coating icephobicity. Coating properties were characterised, including topography, surface roughness, thermal properties, wettability, and icephobicity. Moreover, their performance was investigated under various environmental stresses, such as repeated icing/deicing cycles, immersion in corrosive media, and exposure to ultraviolet (UV) irradiation. According to the results, all coatings exhibited medium-low ice adhesion, with slightly more stable icephobic behaviour for cottonseed oil-based coatings over the icing/deicing cycles. Surface roughness slightly increased, and wetting performances decreased after the cyclic tests, but chemical changes were not revealed. Moreover, coatings demonstrated good chemical resistance in selected corrosive media, with better performance for paraffin-based coatings. However, a slight decrease in hydrophobicity was detected due to surface structural changes. Finally, paraffin-based coatings showed better resistance under UV irradiation based on carbonyl index and colour change measurements.

Tribochemistry of adaptive integrated interfaces at boundary lubricated contacts.

Project description:Understanding how an adaptive integrated interface between lubricant additives and solid contacts works will enable improving the wear and friction of moving engine components. This work represents the comprehensive characterization of compositional and structural orientation at the sliding interface from the perspective of surface/interface tribochemistry. The integrated interface of a lubricant additive-solid resulting from the friction testing of Graphite-like carbon (GLC) and PVD-CrN coated rings sliding against cast iron under boundary lubrication was studied. The results indicate that in the case of the CrN/cast iron pair the antiwear and friction behavior were very strongly dependent upon lubricant. In contrast, the tribology of the GLC surface showed a much lower dependence on lubrication. In order to identify the compounds and their distribution across the interface, x-ray microanalysis phase mapping was innovatively applied and the principle of hard and soft acids and bases (HSAB) to understand the behaviour. Phase mapping clearly showed the hierarchical interface of the zinc-iron polyphosphate tribofilm for various sliding pairs and different sliding durations. This interface structure formed between lubricant additives and the sliding surfaces adapts to the sliding conditions - the term adaptive interface. The current results help explain the tribology of these sliding components in engine.

In Situ Chemical Mapping of the Thin-Film Lubricated Contact.

Project description:In this article, we propose a direct measurement of the distribution of two different chemical species in a thin-film lubricated contact under pure rolling conditions. The two chemical species were a carbonyl from an ester bond of a polyalphametacrylate (PAMA) polymer and an ether bond of a polyalphalycol (PAG) molecule, formulated in low-viscosity fluids using a mineral polyalphaolefin (PAO). A full chemical mapping of the lubricated contact region was provided thanks to the Bastet tribometer consisting of a ball-on-disk tribometer placed under a microscope coupled with an infrared spectrometer. By following the specific infrared stretching band of these two species in the inlet, contact, and cavitation areas, we showed how these molecules penetrate the high-pressure contact zone and participate in the film-formation.
