Social structure and relatedness in the fringe-lipped bat (Trachops cirrhosus).

ABSTRACT: General insights into the causes and effects of social structure can be gained from comparative analyses across socially and ecologically diverse taxa, such as bats, but long-term data are lacking for most species. In the neotropical fringe-lipped bat, Trachops cirrhosus, social transmission of foraging behaviour is clearly demonstrated in captivity, yet its social structure in the wild remains unclear. Here, we used microsatellite-based estimates of relatedness and records of 157 individually marked adults from 106 roost captures over 6 years, to infer whether male and female T. cirrhosus have preferred co-roosting associations and whether such associations were influenced by relatedness. Using a null model that controlled for year and roosting location, we found that both male and female T. cirrhosus have preferred roosting partners, but that only females demonstrate kin-biased association. Most roosting groups (67%) contained multiple females with one or two reproductive males. Relatedness patterns and recapture records corroborate genetic evidence for female philopatry and male dispersal. Our study adds to growing evidence that many bats demonstrate preferred roosting associations, which has the potential to influence social information transfer.

Project description:Labeo fimbriatus is a medium carp species found throughout India's peninsular river basins and is regarded as a valuable aquaculture resource alongside Indian major carps due to its taste and nutritional value. This species has recently declined dramatically due to habitat degradation and overfishing. Because of its enormous economic importance, a selective breeding programme is likely to be in place to improve performance traits. Knowledge of genetic variation among the base population from which the broodstock will be selected is an important step in this process. A diverse genetic base of broodstock is required to achieve the best response to selection for long-term aquaculture management practices. Consequently, using mitochondrial DNA (ATPase 6 and Control region) and microsatellite markers, we have made the first step toward estimating the level of genetic variation and how it is distributed among the four populations of L. fimbriatus found in peninsular rivers in India. The ATPase 6 gene analysis in four populations revealed 15 haplotypes and 51 variable sites, in contrast to the Control region, which had 60 haplotypes together with 73 variable sites and a haplotype diversity of 0.941. Twelve microsatellite loci displayed estimated allele numbers (N A) ranging from 3 to 19, observed heterozygosity (H O), and expected heterozygosity (H E), respectively, of 0.705 to 0.753 and 0.657 to 0.914. Each marker type showed a significant F ST value, indicating the presence of low to moderate genetic differentiation across entire wild populations. The Godavari, Kaveri, and Mahanadi populations formed one cluster according to the UPGMA, which was based on genetic distance matrix, while the Krishna population formed a separate cluster. The comparative genetic analysis of data from different markers utilized in the current study would enable the identification of the genetic stocks of L. fimbriatus and facilitate conservation measures and selective breeding.Supplementary informationThe online version contains supplementary material available at 10.1007/s13205-022-03369-y.

Project description:In this study we aimed to examine whether the 'redundancy' (a backup function to ensure the signal transmission) or 'multiple messages' (sensory communication system in combination) hypothesis would explain the function of multimodal communication of white-lipped peccaries (Tayassu pecari-WLPs). We also aimed to assess the individual factors (the social rank and sex of the sender) influencing the production of, and responses to unimodal and multimodal signals. We determined the social rank of 21 WLPs living in two captive groups and quantified the production of unimodal and multimodal signals when displaying threatening and submissive behaviors. WLPs most often produce multimodal signals independent of a previous unimodal signal failure, which suggests that they were adding more information, such as the sender's size, rather than merely increasing efficacy by engaging a different receiver's sensory channel. There was no effect of the sender's sex in the production of, and responses to, multimodal signals. However, the higher the sender's social rank, the greater the production of multimodal signals when WLPs were displaying threatening behaviors; whereas the lower the sender's social rank, the greater the production of multimodal signals when displaying submission behaviors. Multimodal signals elicited more non-aggressive responses than did the unimodal signals when displaying a threat. Moreover, the higher the sender's social rank, the greater the occurrence of non-aggressive responses to multimodal signals when displaying a threat; whereas the opposite occurred when displaying submission. Our findings support the 'multiple messages' hypothesis to explain the function of multimodal signaling during agonistic interactions in WLPs. Additionally, both the production of, and responses to, multimodal signals are related to the sender's social rank. These results allow us to suggest that the production of multimodal signals may have a key role in mitigating conflict and thus promoting group cohesion among white-lipped peccaries.
