The application of non-invasive and invasive mechanical ventilation in the first episode of acute respiratory failure.

ABSTRACT: Acute respiratory failure (RF) is a life-threatening syndrome. This study investigated the application of two major clinical strategies, non-invasive mechanical ventilation (NIV) and invasive mechanical ventilation (IMV), in the first episode of acute RF. Data from the longitudinal health insurance database, which included 1,000,000 insured citizens, were used. The NIV group consisted of 1201 patients and the IMV group consisted of 16,072 patients. Chi-square test and t test were applied to determine the differences in categorical and continuous variables.
