Dataset of Vietnamese teachers' perspectives and perceived support during the COVID-19 pandemic.

ABSTRACT: The COVID-19 pandemic has caused unprecedented damage to the educational system worldwide. Besides the measurable economic impacts in the short-term and long-term, there is intangible destruction within educational institutions. In particular, teachers - the most critical intellectual resources of any schools - have to face various types of financial, physical, and mental struggles due to COVID-19. To capture the current context of more than one million Vietnamese teachers during COVID-19, we distributed an e-survey to more than 2,500 randomly selected teachers from two major teacher communities on Facebook from 6th to 11th April 2020. From over 373 responses, we excluded the observations which violated our cross-check questions and retained 294 observations for further analysis. This dataset includes: (i) Demographics of participants; (ii) Teachers' perspectives regarding the operation of teaching activities during the pandemic; (iii) Teachers' received support from their schools, government bodies, other stakeholders such as teacher unions, and parents' associations; and (iv) teachers' evaluation of school readiness toward digital transformation. Further, the dataset was supplemented with an additional question on the teachers' primary source of professional development activities during the pandemic.

Project description:In this study, we examine the impact of Information Systems (IS) on the COVID-19 pandemic, focusing on the utilisation of the "Webex" online platform within the Greek educational system. This assessment aims to evaluate the platform's impact on organisational performance within this industry, particularly focusing on teachers' perspectives. This paper presents original quantitative research exploring how technological advancements have facilitated distance learning driven by the COVID-19 pandemic. The research is important because it highlights the challenges faced by Greece, as shown by the Digital Economy and Society Index (DESI) indicators [1]. In 2019, Greece ranked 26th out of 28 Member States, indicating outdated infrastructure and a lack of training among educators. Additionally, the country experienced a "brain drain" as a result of the 2008 Greek financial crisis, leading to skilled educators leaving the country [2]. The adoption of distance learning at the secondary education level in Greece presents unique challenges as well as opportunities, according to the research. The novelty of this study is its focus on primary data gathered from secondary school teachers in relation to the country's technological and other challenges. It provides insights into the real-world application and effectiveness of the Webex platform in an unprecedented situation. The study contributes to new knowledge by providing a detailed understanding of teachers' IT competency, their perceptions of online education, and the state's support (or lack thereof). It also highlights the psychological benefits of online education for students despite the noted challenges in attendance and achieving educational objectives. However, these lessons were not consistent for all students. Based on the statistical analysis, factors such as attendance, challenges perceived by the students, and the achievement of educational objectives were determined to be indicators of the effectiveness of online instructors. Practically, this research highlights the necessity for improved training for teachers to effectively utilise online platforms. It also recommends enhancing IT infrastructure and government support to improve online education. Teachers expressed openness to training seminars and recognised the psychological gains for students, suggesting the potential for continued use of online teaching methods post-pandemic. The wider sociopolitical impact involves informing discussions on the necessity, value, and effectiveness of e-learning, thus guiding future educational policies and practices.

Project description:The COVID-19 pandemic and governments' response lead to dramatical change in quality of life worldwide. However, the extent of this change in Vietnamese medical and nursing students has not been documented. The study aims to describe the quality of life and changes in quality of life of medical and nursing students during the COVID-19 pandemic and examine the association of quality of life and changes in quality of life with fear of COVID-19 and other socio-economic and demographic factors. The study was a cross-sectional study on all students of Hanoi Medical University from 3 majors: General Medicine, Preventive Medicine, Nursing (3672 invited students); from 7th to 29th of April 2020; using an online questionnaire that included demographic and academic information, the Vietnamese version of the SF-36 Quality of Life questionnaire and the Fear of COVID-19 Scale (FCV-19S). Linear and modified Poisson regression was used to examine the association between quality of life, changes in quality of life and other factors. The number of participants was 1583 (response rate 43%). Among 8 dimensions of the SF-36 (ranged 0-100), Vitality had the lowest score with a median score of 46. The median physical composite score (PCS) of the sample was 40.6 (IQR:20.8-53.2), 33.5% of the sample had an above-population average PCS score. The median mental composite score (MCS) of the sample was 20.3 (IQR:3.8-31.7), and 98.2% had an MCS score below average. 9.9% (95%CI:8.5%-11.4%) of the population reported a significant negative change in the quality of life. Fear of COVID-19 was not associated with significant changes in quality of life, nor MCS while having some association with PCS (Coef:-5.39;95%CI:-3to-7.8). Perceived reduction in quality of life was also associated with: being on clinical rotation COVID-19 (PR:1.5;95%CI:1.05-2.2), difficulties affording health services (PR:1.4;95%CI:1.02-1.95), obesity (PR:2.38;95%CI:1.08-5.25) and chronic disease (PR:1.92;95%CI:1.23-3), typical symptoms (PR:1.85; 95%CI:1.23-2.78) and atypical symptoms of COVID-19 (PR:2.32;95%CI:1.41-3.81). The majority of medical and nursing students had below average quality of life, with lower vitality and mental composite health score in the settings of COVID-19. Perceived decrease in quality of life was associated with clinical rotation, difficulties affording healthcare services and was not associated with Fear of COVID-19.
