The <i>Xist</i> lncRNA mediates X chromosome inactivation (XCI). Here we show that Spen, an <i>Xist</i>-binding repressor protein essential for XCI , binds to ancient retroviral RNA, performing a surveillance role to recruit chromatin silencing machinery to these parasitic loci.
