Transparent heater with meshed amorphous oxide/metal/amorphous oxide for electric vehicle applications.

ABSTRACT: For electric vehicle application, one of the problems to be solved is defrosting or defogging a windshield or a side mirror without gas-fired heaters. In this paper, we report on a high performance of transparent heater with meshed amorphous-SiInZnO (SIZO)/ Ag/ amorphous-SiInZnO (SIZO) (SAS) for pure electric vehicles. We have adopted amorphous oxide materials like SIZO since SIZO is well known amorphous oxide materials showing high transparency and smooth surface roughness. With the mesh processing technology, a transparent electrode with high transmittance of 91% and low sheet resistance of 13.8 Ω/ϒ was implemented. When a 10 V supply voltage is applied to transparent heater, the transparent heater on glass substrate was heated up to 130^oC in just 5 seconds and then reached to 250^oC after tens of seconds due to the low sheet resistance. In addition, the SAS transparent meshed heater (TMH) showed high stability under cycling test and long time working stability test.

Electronic Structure of Low-Temperature Solution-Processed Amorphous Metal Oxide Semiconductors for Thin-Film Transistor Applications.

Project description:The electronic structure of low temperature, solution-processed indium-zinc oxide thin-film transistors is complex and remains insufficiently understood. As commonly observed, high device performance with mobility >1 cm2 V-1 s-1 is achievable after annealing in air above typically 250 °C but performance decreases rapidly when annealing temperatures ≤200 °C are used. Here, the electronic structure of low temperature, solution-processed oxide thin films as a function of annealing temperature and environment using a combination of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy, and photothermal deflection spectroscopy is investigated. The drop-off in performance at temperatures ≤200 °C to incomplete conversion of metal hydroxide species into the fully coordinated oxide is attributed. The effect of an additional vacuum annealing step, which is beneficial if performed for short times at low temperatures, but leads to catastrophic device failure if performed at too high temperatures or for too long is also investigated. Evidence is found that during vacuum annealing, the workfunction increases and a large concentration of sub-bandgap defect states (re)appears. These results demonstrate that good devices can only be achieved in low temperature, solution-processed oxides if a significant concentration of acceptor states below the conduction band minimum is compensated or passivated by shallow hydrogen and oxygen vacancy-induced donor levels.

Transparent ferromagnetic and semiconducting behavior in Fe-Dy-Tb based amorphous oxide films.

Project description:We report a class of amorphous thin film material comprising of transition (Fe) and Lanthanide metals (Dy and Tb) that show unique combination of functional properties. Films were deposited with different atomic weight ratio (R) of Fe to Lanthanide (Dy + Tb) using electron beam co-evaporation at room temperature. The films were found to be amorphous, with grazing incidence x-ray diffraction and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy studies indicating that the films were largely oxidized with a majority of the metal being in higher oxidation states. Films with R = 0.6 were semiconducting with visible light transmission due to a direct optical band-gap (2.49 eV), had low resistivity and sheet resistance (7.15 × 10(-4) Ω-cm and ~200 Ω/sq respectively), and showed room temperature ferromagnetism. A metal to semiconductor transition with composition (for R < 11.9) also correlated well with the absence of any metallic Fe(0) oxidation state in the R = 0.6 case as well as a significantly higher fraction of oxidized Dy. The combination of amorphous microstructure and room temperature electronic and magnetic properties could lead to the use of the material in multiple applications, including as a transparent conductor, active material in thin film transistors for display devices, and in spin-dependent electronics.

Realization of a Novel Free-Piston Engine Generator for Hybrid-Electric Vehicle Applications.

Project description:Free-piston engine generators (FPEGs) have huge potential to be the principal energy conversion device for generating electricity from fuel as part of a hybrid-electric vehicle (EV) powertrain system. The principal advantages lay in the fact that they are theoretically more efficient, more compact, and more lightweight compared to other competing EV hybrid and range-extender solutions (internal combustion engines, rotary engines, fuel cells, etc.). However, this potential has yet to be realized. This article details a novel dual-piston FPEG configuration and presents the full layout of a system and provides technical evidence of a commercial FPEG system's likely size and weight. The work also presents the first results obtained from a project which set-out to realize an operational FPEG system in hardware through the development and testing of a flexible prototype test platform. The work presents the performance and control system characteristics, for a first of a kind system; these show great technical potential with stable and repeatable combustion events achieved with around 700 W per cylinder and 26% indicated efficiency.

GaN Micromechanical Resonators with Meshed Metal Bottom Electrode.

Project description:This work describes a novel architecture to realize high-performance gallium nitride (GaN) bulk acoustic wave (BAW) resonators. The method is based on the growth of a thick GaN layer on a metal electrode grid. The fabrication process starts with the growth of a thin GaN buffer layer on a Si (111) substrate. The GaN buffer layer is patterned and trenches are made and refilled with sputtered tungsten (W)/silicon dioxide (SiO?) forming passivated metal electrode grids. GaN is then regrown, nucleating from the exposed GaN seed layer and coalescing to form a thick GaN device layer. A metal electrode can be deposited and patterned on top of the GaN layer. This method enables vertical piezoelectric actuation of the GaN layer using its largest piezoelectric coefficient (d33) for thickness-mode resonance. Having a bottom electrode also results in a higher coupling coefficient, useful for the implementation of acoustic filters. Growth of GaN on Si enables releasing the device from the frontside using isotropic xenon difluoride (XeF?) etch and therefore eliminating the need for backside lithography and etching.

Highly transparent and flexible Ag nanowire-embedded silk fibroin electrodes for biocompatible flexible and transparent heater.

Project description:We investigated the electrical, optical and mechanical properties of silver (Ag) nanowire (NW) embedded into a silk fibroin (SF) substrate to create high performance, flexible, transparent, biocompatible, and biodegradable heaters for use in wearable electronics. The Ag NW-embedded SF showed a low sheet resistance of 15 Ω sq-1, high optical transmittance of 85.1%, and a small inner/outer critical bending radius of 1 mm. In addition, the Ag NW-embedded SF showed a constant resistance change during repeated bending, folding, and rolling because the connectivity of the Ag NW embedded into the SF substrate was well maintained. Furthermore, the biocompatible and biodegradable Ag NW-embedded SF substrate served as a flexible interconnector for wearable electronics. The high performance of the transparent and flexible heater demonstrated that an Ag NW-embedded SF-based heater can act as a biocompatible and biodegradable substrate for wearable heaters for the human body.

Transparent Body-Attachable Multifunctional Pressure, Thermal, and Proximity Sensor and Heater.

Project description:A multifunctional sensor capable of simultaneous sensing of temperature, pressure, and proximity has been developed. This transparent and body-attachable device is also capable of providing heat under low voltage. The multi-sensor consists of metal fibers fabricated by electrospinning and electroplating. The device comprises randomly deposited metal fibers, which not only provide heating but also perform as thermal and proximity sensors, and orderly aligned metal fibers that act as a pressure sensor. The sensor is fabricated by weaving straight rectangular electrodes on a transparent substrate (a matrix). The sensitivity is readily enhanced by installing numerous matrices that facilitate higher sensing resolution. The convective heat transfer coefficient of the heater is h = 0.014 W·cm-2·°C-1. The temperature coefficient of resistivity (TCR) and pressure sensitivity (ηP) are 0.038 °C-1 and 5.3 × 10-3 kPa-1, respectively. The superior sensitivity of the device is confirmed via quantitative comparison with similar devices. This multifunctional device also has a superior convective heat transfer coefficient than do other heaters reported in the literature.

Field-Induced Transparent Electrode-Integrated Transparent Solar Cells and Heater for Active Energy Windows: Broadband Energy Harvester.

Project description:Invisible power generation by natural and artificial light enables sustainability by onsite-power deployment, lower cost, and minimal burden on the built environment. However, dark, opaque photovoltaics limit light utilization in a transparent way. Herein, it is proposed that the active energy window (AEW) invisibly features power production, providing higher freedom for onsite power generators in window objects without limiting human vision. The AEW has a transparent photovoltaic (TPV) for onsite power and a transparent heater (TH) to remove the effects of shadows from snow and recover the power lost. Moreover, a heating function is applied to remove the effects of weathering related to snow. The proposed prototype integrates a TPV-TH, offering ultraviolet (UV)-blocking, daylighting, thermal comfort, and onsite power with a power conversion efficiency of 3% (AM1.5G). Field-induced transparent electrodes are applied to the TPV-TH and designed considering the AEW. Owing to these electrodes, the AEW ensure a wide field-of-view without optical dead zones, ensuring see-through vision. The first TPV-TH integration is performed into a 2 cm2 -window that generates onsite power of 6 mW and has an average visible transmittance of ≈39%. It is believed that light can be utilized with comfort through the AEW in self-sustainable buildings and vehicles.

Photoresist-free fully self-patterned transparent amorphous oxide thin-film transistors obtained by sol-gel process.

Project description:We demonstrated self-patterned solution-processed amorphous oxide semiconductor thin-film transistors (TFTs) using photosensitive sol-gels. The photosensitive sol-gels were synthesized by adding ?-diketone compounds, i.e., benzoylacetone and acetylacetone, to sol-gels. The chemically modified photosensitive sol-gels showed a high optical absorption at specific wavelengths due to the formation of metal chelate bonds. Photoreactions of the modified solutions enabled a photoresist-free process. Moreover, Zn-Sn-O with a high Sn ratio, which is hard to wet-etch using conventional photolithography due to its chemical durability, was easily patterned via the self-patterning process. Finally, we fabricated a solution-processed oxide TFT that included fully self-patterned electrodes and an active layer.

Thermally Stable Amorphous Oxide-based Schottky Diodes through Oxygen Vacancy Control at Metal/Oxide Interfaces.

Project description:Amorphous oxide semiconductor (AOS)-based Schottky diodes have been utilized for selectors in crossbar array memories to improve cell-to-cell uniformity with a low-temperature process. However, thermal instability at interfaces between the AOSs and metal electrodes can be a critical issue for the implementation of reliable Schottky diodes. Under post-fabrication annealing, an excessive redox reaction at the ohmic interface can affect the bulk region of the AOSs, inducing an electrical breakdown of the device. Additionally, structural relaxation (SR) of the AOSs can increase the doping concentration at the Schottky interface, which results in a degradation of the rectifying performance. Here, we improved the thermal stability at AOS/metal interfaces by regulating the oxygen vacancy (VO) concentration at both sides of the contact. For a stable quasi-ohmic contact, a Cu-Mn alloy was introduced instead of a single component reactive metal. As Mn only takes up O in amorphous In-Ga-Zn-O (a-IGZO), excessive VO generation in bulk region of a-IGZO can be prevented. At the Schottky interfaces, the barrier characteristics were not degraded by thermal annealing as the Ga concentration in a-IGZO increased. Ga not only reduces the inherent VO concentration but also retards SR, thereby suppressing tunneling conduction and enhancing the thermal stability of devices.

A systematic evaluation of nanocast metal oxide microspheres for phosphoproteomics applications

Project description:We used the nanocasting technique to prepare a range of different metal oxide microspheres that allow an objective comparison of the different materials. Using samples of different complexity, ranging from synthetic peptides to whole cell lysates, we characterized the binding behavior of these materials. We observed that the phosphoproteome coverage achievable using TiO2, ZrO2, Fe2O3 and In2O3 is comparable in depth, although some differences between individual oxides exist. Single-shot LC-MS/MS experiments on a linear ion trap-orbitrap instrument identified more than 3000 phosphopeptides from the equivalent of 20 μg of HEK cell lysate protein. However, the application of common enrichment protocols to biological samples may still lead to some bias due to an underrepresentation of highly phosphorylated peptides. These peptides are predominantly observed when materials with lower phosphopeptide affinity such as NiO and Co3O4 are used for enrichment and their biological relevance may be underestimated.
