Substrate-Selective Morphology of Cesium Iodide Clusters on Graphene.

ABSTRACT: Formation and characterization of low-dimensional nanostructures is crucial for controlling the properties of two-dimensional (2D) materials such as graphene. Here, we study the structure of low-dimensional adsorbates of cesium iodide (CsI) on free-standing graphene using aberration-corrected transmission electron microscopy at atomic resolution. CsI is deposited onto graphene as charged clusters by electrospray ion-beam deposition. The interaction with the electron beam forms two-dimensional CsI crystals only on bilayer graphene, while CsI clusters consisting of 4, 6, 7, and 8 ions are exclusively observed on single-layer graphene. Chemical characterization by electron energy-loss spectroscopy imaging and precise structural measurements evidence the possible influence of charge transfer on the structure formation of the CsI clusters and layers, leading to different distances of the Cs and I to the graphene.

Project description:Small clusters of cesium-lead-iodide perovskites (CLIPs) have been prepared in the Na-X zeolite matrix and studied by means of spectroscopy and quantum chemical modeling. Regularity of pores in single crystals of zeolite assures the formation of clusters of a certain size. By the first-principles quantum chemical calculations, we have determined that clusters Cs4PbI6, Cs5Pb2I9, and probably Cs7Pb5I16 with a size of 0.74, 1.29, and 1.36 nm, respectively, have elevated stability compared to other species, and they fit into the pores of Na-X zeolite. Electronic energy spectra of these clusters have been calculated and compared with experimentally measured ones.

Infrared multiple photon dissociation of cesium iodide clusters doped with mono-, di- and triglycine.

Project description:Charged cesium iodide clusters doped with mono-, di- and triglycine serve as a model system for sea salt aerosols containing biological molecules. Here, we investigate reactions of these complexes under infrared irradiation, with spectra obtained by infrared multiple photon dissociation. The cluster ions are generated via electrospray ionization and analyzed in the cell of a Fourier Transform Ion Cyclotron Resonance Mass Spectrometer. Depending on the cluster size and peptide length, loss of HI or loss of a glycine unit is observed. The experimental measurements are supported by quantum chemical calculations. We show that N-H and O-H stretching modes dominate the spectrum, with large shifts depending on local interactions, namely due to interaction with iodide anions or intramolecular hydrogen bonding. Both experiment and theory indicate that several isomers are present in the experimental mixture, with different infrared fingerprints as well as dissociation pathways.

Octahedral Molybdenum Iodide Clusters Supported on Graphene for Resistive and Optical Gas Sensing.

Project description:This paper reports for the first time a gas-sensitive nanohybrid based on octahedral molybdenum iodide clusters supported on graphene flakes (Mo6@Graphene). The possibility of integrating this material into two different transducing schemes for gas sensing is proposed since the nanomaterial changes both its electrical resistivity and optical properties when exposed to gases and at room temperature. Particularly, when implemented in a chemoresistive device, the Mo6@Graphene hybrid showed an outstanding sensing performance toward NO2, revealing a limit of quantification of about 10 ppb and excellent response repeatability (0.9% of relative error). While the Mo6@Graphene chemoresistor was almost insensitive to NH3, the use of an optical transduction scheme (changes in photoluminescence) provided an outstanding detection of NH3 even for a low loading of Mo6. Nevertheless, the photoluminescence was not affected by the presence of NO2. In addition, the hybrid material revealed high stability of its gas sensing properties over time and under ambient moisture. Computational chemistry calculations were performed to better understand these results, and plausible sensing mechanisms were presented accordingly. These results pave the way to develop a new generation of multi-parameter sensors in which electronic and optical interrogation techniques can be implemented simultaneously, advancing toward the realization of highly selective and orthogonal gas sensing.

Enhanced Photocatalytic Activity and Stability in Hydrogen Evolution of Mo6 Iodide Clusters Supported on Graphene Oxide.

Project description:Catalytic properties of the cluster compound (TBA)2[Mo6Ii8(O2CCH3)a6] (TBA = tetrabutylammonium) and a new hybrid material (TBA)2Mo6Ii8@GO (GO = graphene oxide) in water photoreduction into molecular hydrogen were investigated. New hybrid material (TBA)2Mo6Ii8@GO was prepared by coordinative immobilization of the (TBA)2[Mo6Ii8(O2CCH3)a6] onto GO sheets and characterized by spectroscopic, analytical, and morphological techniques. Liquid and, for the first time, gas phase conditions were chosen for catalytic experiments under UV-Vis irradiation. In liquid water, optimal H2 production yields were obtained after using (TBA)2[Mo6Ii8(O2CCH3)a6] and (TBA)2Mo6Ii8@GO) catalysts after 5 h of irradiation of liquid water. Despite these remarkable catalytic performances, "liquid-phase" catalytic systems have serious drawbacks: the cluster anion evolves to less active cluster species with partial hydrolytic decomposition, and the nanocomposite completely decays in the process. Vapor water photoreduction showed lower catalytic performance but offers more advantages in terms of cluster stability, even after longer radiation exposure times and recyclability of both catalysts. The turnover frequency (TOF) of (TBA)2Mo6Ii8@GO is three times higher than that of the microcrystalline (TBA)2[Mo6Ii8(O2CCH3)a6], in agreement with the better accessibility of catalytic cluster sites for water molecules in the gas phase. This bodes well for the possibility of creating {Mo6I8}4+-based materials as catalysts in hydrogen production technology from water vapor.

Substrate-Selective Adhesion of Metal Nanoparticles to Graphene Devices.

Project description:Nanostructured electronic devices, such as those based on graphene, are typically grown on top of the insulator SiO2. Their exposure to a flux of small size-selected silver nanoparticles has revealed remarkably selective adhesion: the graphene channel can be made fully metallized, while the insulating substrate remains coverage-free. This conspicuous contrast derives from the low binding energy between the metal nanoparticles and a contaminant-free passivated silica surface. In addition to providing physical insight into nanoparticle adhesion, this effect may be of value in applications involving deposition of metallic layers on device working surfaces: it eliminates the need for masking the insulating region and the associated extensive and potentially deleterious pre- and postprocessing.

Observation of the unexpected morphology of graphene wrinkle on copper substrate.

Project description:Graphene, a two-dimensional material, has a wide range of unique properties and could be used in the development of varieties of mechanic, electronic and photonic devices, therefore methods to synthesis large-area high-quality graphene films are urgently required. Chemical vapor deposition (CVD) has been of particular interest recently due to its simplicity and low cost. However, because of the mismatch of thermal expansion coefficients, high densities of wrinkles are commonly observed. Despite their prevalence and potential impact on large-scale graphene properties, relatively little is known about their structural morphology and formation mechanism. In this article, morphologies of graphene obtained by CVD are experimentally investigated by an atomic force microscope (AFM) and results show that the profiles of wrinkles are much larger than they should be. By using theoretical methods and molecular dynamics simulations (MD), we find internal molecules created during CVD process which supply additional pressure is the main mechanism.

Carbon clusters on substrate surface for graphene growth- theoretical and experimental approach.

Project description:Growth morphology of carbon clusters deposited on different substrates were investigated by theoretical and experimental approach. For theoretical approach, molecular dynamics was employed to evaluate an adsorptive stability of different size of carbon clusters placed on different substrates. The adsorptive stability was estimated by the difference of total energy of supercell designed as carbon cluster placed on a certain crystal plane of substrate. Among the simulations of this study, carbon cluster flatly settled down on the surface of SrTiO[Formula: see text](001). The result was experimentally verified with layer by layer growth of graphene by pulsed laser deposition in carbon dioxide atmosphere. The absorptive stability can be useful reference for screening substrate for any target material other than graphene.

Cesium lead iodide electrospun fibrous membranes for white light-emitting diodes.

Project description:Inorganic perovskite cesium lead iodide nanocrystals (CsPbI3NCs) are good candidates for optoelectronic devices because of their excellent properties of remarkable luminous performance (high luminous efficiency, narrow luminous spectral line), and high photoelectric conversion efficiency by using simple preparation method. But their inherent poor stability greatly limits its practical applications. In this paper, electrospinning is used to grow fibrous membranes with embedded cesium lead iodide perovskite nanocrystals (PNCs) formedin situin a one-step process. It was found that cubicα-CsPbI3PNCs were formed in polymer fibers, showing bright and uniform fluorescence signals. Furthermore, the water wetting angles were increased by the fibrous structure enhancing the hydrophobicity and the stability of the fibrous membranes in water. The electrospun fibrous membrane containing CsPbI3was combined with another membrane containing CsPbBr3under a blue light-emitting diode (LED) to create a white LED (WLED) in air successfully with CIE coordinates (0.3020, 0.3029), and a correlated color temperature of 7527 °K, indicating high purity of WLED. Our approach provides a new way to create highly stable, photoluminescent water-resistant perovskite nanocrystalline films.

Vacuum-Deposited Cesium Tin Iodide Thin Films with Tunable Thermoelectric Properties.

Project description:Most current thermoelectric materials have important drawbacks, such as toxicity, scarceness, and peak operating temperatures above 300 °C. Herein, we report the thermoelectric properties of different crystalline phases of Sn-based perovskite thin films. The 2D phase, Cs2SnI4, is obtained through vacuum thermal deposition and easily converted into the black β phase of CsSnI3 (B-β CsSnI3) by annealing at 150 °C. B-β CsSnI3 is a p-type semiconductor with a figure of merit (ZT) ranging from 0.021 to 0.033 for temperatures below 100 °C, which makes it a promising candidate to power small electronic devices such as wearable sensors which may be interconnected in the so-called Internet of Things. The B-β phase is stable in nitrogen, whereas it spontaneously oxidizes to Cs2SnI6 upon exposure to air. Cs2SnI6 shows a negative Seebeck coefficient and an ultralow thermal conductivity. However, the ZT values are 1 order of magnitude lower than for B-β CsSnI3 due to a considerably lower electrical conductivity.

Improving Stability of Cesium Lead Iodide Perovskite Nanocrystals by Solution Surface Treatments.

Project description:Cesium lead halide perovskite nanocrystals have a narrow emission peak tunable in the visible wavelength range with a high quantum yield. They hold great potential for optoelectronic applications such as light-emitting diodes or electronic displays. However, cesium lead iodide (CsPbI3) is not stable under ambient conditions, limiting its applications. Here, we use a solution surface treatment approach to improve the photostability of CsPbI3 suspensions in toluene. When a CsPbBr3 precursor is used via the method of heterogeneous surface treatment, the photoluminescence (PL) intensity is enhanced but the PL only lasts 2 days. In contrast, when a CsPbI3 precursor is used via the method of homogeneous surface treatment, not only the PL intensity of CsPbI3 suspensions is enhanced but also the stability with the PL lasts for 11 days. It is likely that a better protection on the core CsPbI3 by itself can be achieved because of better matching of the material structure and surface chemistry.
